Oooh you should go! I'm heading back end of February for 10 days. I opted out of going to Hawaii so that I could spend some time with family instead.
So did anyone get anything tri related for Christmas? I bought myself a nice used indoor trainer for $50. Pick it up tomorrow. My wfie got me a SpeedFill hydration system for the tri bike. I'm excited to see how well it will work. Has anybody tried a Speedfill hydration for their bike? I also hid a Kinetic trainer in the house also....lol |

I used the "tell everybody what I'm doing" plan for both my first marathon and first tri; it really does help keep you motivated as you don't want to explain to everyone why you dropped out - it was too hard and I'm too lazy are really bad excuses Good luck, Ann-Marie |

(Of course that might be because I don't have a treadmill and don't have a choice.) Treadmills sound boring and outside is so relaxing and pretty. (Remind me of this in July when I'm whining that it's 95 degrees out.) |

So did anyone get anything tri related for Christmas? I bought myself a nice used indoor trainer for $50. Pick it up tomorrow. I got Yaktrax, a nice headband with reflectors on it (I generally wear mostly black when running), reflector straps for my clothes and an i-pod arm band. Also got a very nice gift card to the sporting goods store from my Mother-in-law (I have the bestest mother-in-law in the world). Shopping this weekend. So excited. |

Extreme Veteran 1700 Normal, Ill. | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group 2011 - CLOSED Active group. Lots to read and learn. Good deal. One suggestion. Could we sign posts with a first name or nickname that we want to be called by? I'd rather respond to real people where possible. Congrats on signing up for a tri. You can do it! Congrats on the attempt to stop smoking, lose weight and fight back PTS. I used hypnosis 22 years ago to stop smoking. One session. After chain smoking 20 years, I never had another nor did I have withdrawals. Friends are having success with some antidepressant, chantrix? Quit. Go to LiveSTRONG.com and LiveSTRONG.org for all kinds of help. We cancer survivors know that 1:3 are going to get cancer in their lifetimes. Smokers might as well be drawing a target on their chests and yelling, "Here, pick me, pick me, I want cancer." I can tell you, no you don't. If anyone would like me to describe what the later stages of lung cancer look like after it moves to the brain and bone, just ask. My would-have-been mother in law never made the wedding three years ago. She lingered a year coming out of a coma in so much pain she would spend the time begging her son to shoot her. My son in law's mom just died of it. Three months from diagnosis to the wake. I pull no punches on this subject. Politeness has no place in discussions when I'm trying to convince someone to avoid cancer. Happier times: yes, I got several tri-related things for Christmas. My wife is awesome. An LG TT helmet with wind screens, a lap counter and stop watch for the pool, new bike britches, gift cards to the LBS. All good. I bought us a treadmill (may be boring but beats running outside in the winter we've been having in Illinois.) I got myself the Computrainer about Thanksgiving time. My cup runneth over. Fartleks are what runners call speed work. They are intense VO2 intervals like a minute on, minute off...the point is to raise your VO2 max which also raises your ability to hold harder tempo efforts longer and to get your body used to faster speeds. Like this group. Thanks for having me. Iceman or simply Ice. |

At what point am I going to yell "What have i gotten myself into?" there may be moments during training leading up to the race that you will wonder why you're doing this. but mostly, i think i felt the most crazy right before my first race when i was walking down into the water and seeing the spacing of the buoys. but just look around at that moment and see that you're not the only freak out there getting ready to do this! enjoy that first race feeling!!! |

New user 49 Myrtle Beach | Subject: RE: McFuzz's Mentor Group 2011 - CLOSED reid15 - 2010-12-27 6:43 PM I was thinking about getting some weight training/core work in this winter and was wondering if has any experience with personal trainers? I've never been big on weights and thought it might be good to work with someone short term (4-8 weeks) just to get started and make sure I'm doing things right. What do you think? I think this is a good idea. A GOOD PT would be able to help no doubt about it. I'd just suggest doing a little bit of research when chosing your personal trainer. Trainers in this field are a dime a dozen (and I hate to say that, because this is my career field). Some have college degrees in exercise physiology, etc, some don't have the degrees but still have reputable certifications from places such as ACSM, NASM, etc, and some just randomly landed a job at a gym and wound up personal training, with zero background in physiology or biomechanics and zero certifications. Also keep in mind, if you are planning to head to a gym to do your ST, most gyms will give you a free PT session for signing up, and if nothing else, they HAVE to give you free demonstrations of how to properly use the equipment. Good luck! Edited by RunFasterMommy 2010-12-28 8:09 AM |

In order to avoid those jitters just before the race? I hate the pounding music and all the tense vibs everyone gives off on shore. Yack, yack, yack. Adrenaline. I also was having a problem being "whoozy" getting out of the water. I read where that can be caused by cold water against the ear drum. I started using ear plugs and both problems are solved. i put them in, the noise and tense vibs are gone and I am alone with my thoughts and meditate on the fun to come. Good luck! ART, I have my Personal Trainer tonight. I have to find a way to strengthen my legs. it's frustrating to feel like running but not be able to get the legs to come along. Hopefully she'll have some ideas. I started with her in November, thinking I would just do 1 or 2x a week through December. I may keep it up. She's a real form stickler and has me doing lots of core work I wouldn't do on my own. |

I have not been doing any tri-specific training right now, but I have been doing two-a-day Insanity workouts with my runners-turned-wrestlers since Sunday. I love seeing these strapping, young 16-17 year olds bent over gasping for air while I am shouting at them to get moving! But, that's just the sadist in me! |

I can relate to the "whoozy" feeling coming out of the water. My first tri I came out of the water and my wife thought I was drunk. I climbed out of the water and I was trying to walk a straight line up a hill. I would of failed any sobriety test given to me....lol. I thought it may have been that I swam to hard for my first tri. The water was very cool (Carlyle,IL) in May. I may have to try earplugs. Shawn |

Took me 40 years to get over it. Now I hire one to put me through the pain! What is up on with that! I was going to get into IM Moo one way or the other, too. The charity entry goes to a cnacer center for kids. I'm good with that. But I got in on line when things reopened. |

Sadly ive got a cold or flu and must rest a day or two... i'll just be sitting here with my cuppa tea, looking at it longingly ; ) This morning I drove from my inlaws house in CT to my house in upstate NY, I had my road bike on the roof of my car which musta looked pretty funny because we got hit with a HUGE snow storm here and driving around on a snow covered car with a bike... Well, anyhow, I pulled into a garage in a mall forgetting it was up there and blam-o, down came my bike, carbon frame has a dent in it. It's not my tri bike but it's a great road bike... Can't tell if it's going to be road worthy or not. How would one tell if the frame is compromised? I thought I posted a little intro about myself but I don't think I posted it correctly so will redo it in a bit. Once I got out there was totally happy I did. |
