Yeah, a person can get use to this.  Sunny and warm, just what I ordered for winter training.

i've developed my own plan for run training only.  i dont feel that i have enough knowledge of the other two disciplines to dothis well.  though when i have done my own run plan i generally follow the strengths of other plans that worked for me.

it's a brutally cold day and it makes me happy i picked up a cheap gym membership for tbe place across from my work from groupon yesterday.  i wont use it alot but the access to a treadmill is worth it.

who uses a gym regularly?

. I swim at a YMCA. Otherwise I stay indoors for the winter.... But in my basement. I have a nice treadmill and also a computrainer. I use Netflix and also training erg videos to lower the boredom but honestly I don't like the cold wether and I often train at 5am, so training in the dark on icy roads is not something I care to do. In the past I have trained outdoors in the winter, but I simply don't enjoy it and I am not able to do my training properly. By that I mean it's hard to do bike intervals at FTP in the drk in winter as it becomes unsafe. by April I get outdoors more regularly, but as I get older my tolerance for the cold seems to go down.

You're not the only person i've heard say that the tolerance for training in the cold decreases with years.  I am feeling extra wimpy because i am awfulizing about it.  All i keep thinking of is in 2008 when i trained for the Ottawa marathon all winter into spring - 4 days a week - not a single indoor run.  I did have group training so it was a lot easier knowing i had to meet people at a given hour.  But I feel I am being a weenie who is apparently getting scared off by this cold thing - i am Canadian aren't i?

But I find the treadmill to be a great tool so i am actually looking forward to having access to a convenient gym ... i just have to put up with the hard sell to buy a longer membership.

So, uh, what do you guys do for HR training? I am dipping my toe in and fully need to use it to manage my effort for IM distance but have yet to really use it.  I have some zones programmed into my Garmin but I know i need to do some testing and get proper ones set up. Where should I start?

It's funny, you guys in the cold have to worry about winter training in the cold and we have to worry about training through the summer for fall races and the heat.  lol.  Last time I trained for a fall marathon and as I was finishing up a long run in the 100 degree temps in full on sun (there is not much shade here in Tucson) I had to laugh at myself.  Course I will take my situation over the cold any day but lots of folks here move to the indoor training in the summer for the opposite reason you guys move indoors in the winter.

I hate training in the cold, but it is a necessary evil, i will only bike in daylight hours outside, so most of my training will be inside during the week, with a longer outside ride on the weekend weather permitting.

I will run outside as much as possible, but i am starting to get achy, so i might have to move some to the dreadmill or the trails to stop these stupid pains i am getting.  I swim at LA fitness.....wait....lemme rephrase that, when i swim it is at LA fitness in the winter, as soon as May hits I am in the open water of the LI sound.  Not that i swam much last year....

I don't mind runing in the cold, even REALLY cold. It is tough to start a ride when it's in the high 20's early in the morning but you always know it will warm up as sun gets higher out here, so that helps a lot.

I won't even talk about southern california weather today.   For as many reasons as there are to hate California, the weatehr ain't one of them, summer or winter.

South Florida got a cold front. 80s yesterday. 50s today. We'll be back in the 70s for the weekend though

ETA: Did my pre-marathon 20 mile run in 82 degree heat with 70% humidity. I thought I played it smart by training for a winter marathon - apparently Florida had other plans.

Had to smile a little when I assumed you were referring to the high 20's as really cold. We call high 20's in Minnesota in the winter "balmy". But, unlike you I am not man enough to ride in those temps. About the coldest I have ridden is was low 30's and snow. That sucked enough. Will run in temps as low as -5 or so. Anything colder just hurts the lungs to much.

Fred D - 2012-01-03 12:52 PM So I guess we have established that some of us have good winter weather and some don't lol. I got a nice double in today, a good trainer ride and then a swim. How about you guys, what did you do for training today (or are planning?)?

3K or so masters swim followed by 20 minutes on the treadmill tonight, first run coming back from injury (knock wood)

As for weather, I just learned that I have to go to Detroit next week.  Ugh

I hate you all  Today's temp - just did the conversion on line - is 6F. And that was in the afternoon.  Okay, it's supposed to be back to regular freezing temps by tomorrow but it is really freaking cold! No way am I getting out my bike now. It stays on the trainer ...

As for training - planning a trainer ride with one-leg drills and a Jillian Michael's strength video.
