As for the white stuff on the cukes... probably mildew.  Has it been really humid there?  I say clip the effected leaves off.  If it's on like all of them... I don't know.  Some varieties are resistant to it, so you may be ok.

Thank you for fixing my tomato plants. I fertilized them and within a week they were lush and green again. They are the patio variety and being in containers they're using up the nutrients pretty quickly.

Now I need to figure out what kind of peppers I bought. It wasn't until I got home and planted them that I realized they had multiple labels on the containers. They are giant Jalapeno, Serrano, Anaheim, or a combination of each. Hard to tell Jalapeno and Serrano apart when they aren't ripe. If they turn red they're Serrano

Anaheim are my personal favorite. I may or may not have planted 7 or 8 of them.

Hmm, you're right. I planted giant Jalapeno's last year, they were great. I stuffed them and stuck them into a metal test tube rack so I could cook them vertically on the BBQ like poppers. Science!

1) Increase the size of the tomato cage and then wrap it in chicken wire or rabbit fence or, possibly the best option, bird netting (thin plastic netting that I don't think they'll try to bite through).  Something with really small holes so their little, teeny-tiny, craft, theiving paws can't get in there.

2) Dog

3) Air rifle

4) Live trap, but that could end up being a pain in the butt.  How many possums do you want to relocate?

And I might personally switch the order of 2 and 3;)

I am SO stealing that idea!!! My jalapenos just changed from flowers to tiny fruits this week. Stuff with some jack cheese, tooth pick to close, and roast. There may be a bacon wrap involved as well...

And you missed my Deuce Bigelow reference there pal....

We just had a hot spell (90+ for three straight days) and our lettuce looks awful.  I've been watering religiously, but I'll make sure to do it 2x/day during the heat.  It looked awesome just yesterday morning.

Poor lettuce.  Frown

You may just be done with lettuce until the fall.  It's really a cool weather thing--kinda like peas, once, it feel the heat, it's done.  I'm sorry :(

Sesh--so jealous!  Those are gorgeous!

Yep, same with my lettuce. We've been unseasonably cool (75 today and rainy) so our lettuce is still hanging in but it's supposed to be 100 this week so I expect it to be done for awhile.

I know enough to know there is always more to learn, been an agricultural consultant for thirty years, mostly row crops, but in the past I did some work with hort. crops. We have a garden every year and this one has been doing especially well because of moderate temps and plentiful rain. I have some pics but quite honestly, don't know how to post them, but I'll see what I can do to get one up. I really enjoy seeing and reading about everyone's garden.

I can tell you how I post pics--I would really like to see yours.

  • I created an account on photobucket.
  • Then I uploaded photos from my computer to photobucket.
  • After the photo is in your photobucket library, it has a link button (it's the one that looks like chain link)--copy the link option that says "direct".
  • Back on the BT site if you use "rich text editor" you should have a little picture icon (the little cartoon tree) on your tool bar.  Click that and paste the "direct" link into the space that says "image url".  Then your pretty little pic should be in your message.

We're still getting a ton of lettuce despite the triple digit heat. We made a salad with the carrots and lettuce. Also threw some of the carrots into a pasta salad. I had an onion on my burger last night, it was delicious. I've also had a small bowl full of peas and my first cherry tomato.

How long for the onions? I wanted to plant them, but was busy remodeling the kitchen and didn't have the time to plant until mid May.

Those two were left over from last year. I don't remember planting them, they just started regrowing. I did plant a ton more back in march or so I think that look like they are getting close to being done in a week or two if they don't melt in the 110 degree heat.

100F+ temps and afternoon showers are doing ok here, for my late start garden. I have to say - if you plan morning glories once, you have them forever....... I let them climb the sunflowers for a tower for flower!

I seem to be having a similar issue with Marigolds. So far they aren't annoying, in fact we like them, but we planted 20-30 around the garden last year and this year I must have 100 spread all over.

I'm sure this topic has been covered, but I can't seem to find it~ weed mitigation. With all the rain in Chicago this summer my garden is more like a jungle, complete with weeds everywhere. I pull out huge garbage bags full of them, only to come back in a day or two and it's overgrown again. My garden is 100% organic, so I'm not going to spray roundup or other chemicals on it. What do you all do to prevent weeds?
