The number of Social Security disability claims and recipients has skyrocked since 2008. Not sure how so many people suddenly became disabled during this relatively short time frame, but my guess is that it has to do more with the economy, unemployment running out and tougher welfare requirements than actual disability. Caveat, caveat - of course there are many truly disabled people who need help. However, the increase (applications up over 27% in 2010) point clearly toward abuse. With an average recipient age of 49, this becomes unsustainable. So, don't jump to the conclusion that social security is just a sunk cost that is needed to take care of the elderly and truly disabled. Do a google search and you'll plenty of websites instructing on what you need to say and do to be considered disabled so you can collect benefits. I am sickened to think that people, their lawyers/advocates and their doctors lie about having disabilities so they can fleece us. Do you think a couple cheesburgers at school lunch is too much to ask for? Why don't you just make them at home and send them with the kids. |

According to statistics (I like the facts) 65 percent of SS recipients are aged 65 or older, 23 percent are disabled and the rest are `other', which includes early retirees or surviving beneficiaries. That shows that MOST are in fact, over the age of retirement. OK put it into context. How much of the amount of money social security pays out annually is fraud -- what percentage? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Haven't read more than the first page of this but I have to say, I ate "junk" food every single day at school. Guess what, I wasn't obese, fat, out of shape, overweight or anything else. Know why? Because I wasn't a product of a lazy family and a stagnant lifestyle. Changing school provided lunches to "healthy options" is a farce and will do absolutely zero to addressing the problem of a disgusting, fat nation. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() http://www.healthteacher.com/news/Article/1128#.UGZN_pG9KSM This is just one article I found when searching "unhealthy school lunches". So in 2010 a study's says a majority of parents think school lunches are unhealthy. "Oh no, look what the government is feeding our kids, I can't believe it!" Government changes it. "Oh no, look what the government is feeding our kids, I can't believe it!" Perfect example of damned if you do and damned if you don't.... |

Fries too? I loved that garbage...and when they didn't have those (or spags/meatballs) I would just use my lunch money to buy ice cream sandwiches...you could get 4 of those for about $1.20, similar to the cost of a whole lunch back then. I remember those lunches fondly. Was I thin? Yes. Healthy? For the most part, yes...because I never stopped moving and played sports all the time...That said, why would anyone be against making food healthier for kids? I still don't understand that. My only addition to the healthy food change would be physical activity requirements in school. Get 'em moving, have it be fun...win, win.

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can see I'm a little late to this party but if B.O. was so interested in actually healthy children, he should make sure the schools have a P.E. class. I was shocked to hear a while back that schools eliminated these classes, are you kidding me?? Also, I can probably count on one hand the amount of school lunches I had, it just wasn't an issue, we didn't have that kind of extra money. Mom just sent us out the door with a brown bag lunch that was generally either pbj or baloney and then a yummy sugary thing like a SuzieQ. Don't think she really thought about "healthy", it was just her making lunches for the kids. We were also like never home, it was a pitstop to eat, then we were out the door to play with all the neighborhood kids. Unfortunately it's a different world and I wouldn't let my kids now have the freedom I had then. It was just a different lifestlye, kids played, there wasn't a ton of homework or video games to keep em in the house. Oh and looks like my kids will have to brown bag it too b/c they're in a private school that doesn't even have a cafeteria. I'm not nearly as nice as my mom so they'll have to start making their own lunches once they get old enough Patsy |

I'm not nearly as nice as my mom so they'll have to start making their own lunches once they get old enough Patsy How would he do that, just give more money the government doesn't have to the schools? Look, when 2 percent of the entire U.S. budget goes to education, it's going to be hard to fund gym programs, which are in some cash-strapped school districts considered a luxury. Schools are too busy trying to get their kids to pass the standardized tests under No Child Left Behind to worry about things like physical education. Maybe at your kids' private school, they have the money for all the programs in the world (but not a cafeteria) but at some public schools cash is hard to come by for jumpropes and gym teachers. This goes back to the whole irony about people complaining about a nanny state, then saying `Why doesn't the government force my kids to exercise???' How about this -- if parents don't like the gym class offerings, then instead of buying their kids a Playstation, make them go play outside. Stop blaming the government and the schools for everything -- it's not up to them to parent children, that's the parents' job. |
