everlong - 2013-05-06 3:38 PM So I just crossed over 1,000 miles using three different pairs of Kivanas which have a 4mm toe-to-heel drop. The Virrata is built the same way as Kivanas and just came out with a zero drop. I've done some mileage in pure minimalist shoes and they're fine for a beach or trail but for me too little for the road. I was wondering if anybody is using a similar product that's more of a modified speed shoe than a true minimalist shoe and opinions on the zero drop in general. The other upside to the Virrata is being an ounce lighter. I think having put in so many miles with a quasi minimalist shoe already the transition should be easy.

I've been running on the Virratas (swapping them in and out with my Kinvara 3s).  There was a slight transition (a little calf pain, which is normal when decreasing the drop).  I find them to be super comfortable and I like the fact that the Virratas are built on a fairly wide shoe bed to help disperse shock.

I don't have anything to add about the Virratas, but I want to ask how much calf pain is normal when decreasing drop?  I switched to the Mirages from the Ghosts.  I'm only using the Mirages for shorter, easier runs.  When is it safe to try them out on a longer or faster run?  I don't want to get hurt.

You shouldn't feel calf "pain," it should be "soreness."

What really matters is the distance not the intensity so if they feel good on short, easy runs, you should be able to "upgrade" to longer runs (even if they are more intense).

I guess I should have clarified.  It's not pain so much as tightness.  My right calf has a hard, little knot in it.  I'm going to try to work it out tonight with the stick.  I foolishly wore the new shoes without socks my second time out so now I'm left with blisters on both heels.  Overall they feel decent though.

Jen try a little dog tennis ball or a lacrosse ball to hit those tough spots in the calf. I find it works better than the stick sometimes depending on where the knot is. If I find the video link of how to do I will post.

I love doing this. You can also take it and use light pressure on top around the shin area.

That is so awesome! I had a tough mental thing to get over while running and it is people like your brother that I think about and realized I am blessed and I should be out enjoying it just like I am sure your brother does.

Yeah, it is his first marathon. He was actually training for a triathlon when he got injured 2 years ago, so now I am ready to pick up the slack. But this is the first athletic event he has done, although I am trying to get him to do wheelchair basketball.

I noticed everyone was saying the long run is their favorite workout. It is by FAR my least favorite!! I hate running. I either get side stitches or psych myself out too much to do any considerable amount of running without taking a walk break.

X2. Will they let you start together? Based on Boston I doubt it but that would be cool.

That's amazing that he's doing that, and you're picking up where he wasn't able to continue.

No..they start first so they don't run over any of the runners. We have also found out that based on the turning radius of his bike, he would easily hit people unintentionally. First, he cannot see behind his, because his head rests on the back of his seat. Second, it takes almost the entire street to do a 180 degree turn, which is absurd.

Speaking of which, does anybody have any suggestions of places to do long rides in the DC-MD-VA area with little-to-no cars? We considered the Cresent Trail, but it gets very crowded on weeks, which impairs our need for speed!

There is the WO&D trail. I think it is 56 miles long for runners and bikers. I don't know how far you would need to travel to get to it  but may be worth it. There is lots of pull off areas even one at Reston town center and you can grab a bite to eat

I love that you guys can work out together! My favorite workouts: Indoors I love low cadence, outdoors I love OWS and hilly bike rides! I love how strong doing hills make you feel, and I HATE the constant turns of pool swims.

Here is my Rev3 Knoxville Olympic race report from Sunday if interested. Check out the course comments if you haven't heard abut this race .... Welcome, Colleen!  There are loads of good ones in Western Montgomery County (around Poolesville and Sugarloaf), and even more up around Frederick.  That's what my favorite workout is - like Jen, I like to just ride long and zone out.  The Potomac Pedalers website has an online library, but they require membership for access.  If you want to send me your e-mail address, I'll e-mail you some.

Maybe we can convince Larkin, Matt, and maybe even Kristen to come up and all go for a ride some weekend...

I realized I owed y'all a bio...

Name: Kuma (Matt)

Location: Potomac, MD

Story: I am a new triathlete this year after having been a cyclist for probably ten years.  I have really enjoyed the new swim and run work I've done, and I think it has made me a more well-rounded athlete, which is also good.  I have also found this group to be really helpful, both for information and for support.

I grew up in Georgia (Habersham County), and still have family and friends there whom I visit from time to time.  I have lived in the DC area off and on since college, many moons ago.  I'm looking forward to continuing to get to know all of you!

Family Status: I'm married to a woman who is wonderful for lots of reasons, one of which is that she puts up with me.  We have four-year-old twins.

Current Training: I'm working on all three disciplines right now, and now that we've reached the season and I've gotten past my first event, I need to figure out how to focus my work for the remainder of the summer.  The run is the hardest for me, followed by the swim.

2012 Races:  Garrett County Gran Fondo Diabolical Double, Peachtree Road Race 10K (my first running race ever!), Baltimore Bicycling Club Civil War Century, Bethesda, Maryland Turkey Chase 10K

2013 Races:  Pikes Peek 10K, Rockville, MD (COMPLETED!) Monticelloman Olympic, Charlottesville, VA (COMPLETED!), The Columbia Triathlon Olympic, Columbia, MD, The Nation's Tri Olympic, Washington DC, Savageman Olympic, Deep Creek Lake, MD.  Probably some other bike and run only events sprinkled in.

Weight Loss: Not a huge issue, but I can definitely locate a bulge around my middle I could stand to be rid of.

How long was your swim warmup?  The cold water always makes thing extra difficult with breathing.  Did you wear full sleeves?  I think you'll find that the transition to the run from the bike is easier the more you do it.  Have you done any short transition runs off the bike in practice?

Thanks.  The swim warmup was not long.  If I had it to do over, I probably would've warmed up for longer.  I did have a wetsuit, and my body wasn't cold, but my face and head really were.  I really do think I just need to do it more.

I did do a few transition runs off the bike before I got sick this year, but I think it would've helped to do more.  I'm going to make that a regular thing going forward...

66 isn't cold!!!! LOL. I guess it's what you're used to. Doing ocean swims in MA I've been in the water in the mid 50's, now that's cold.

Great job on the race that's a solid time.

The water temps in the ocean here in Maine remain in the 50s to low 60s in August. In some spots, its painful (to me) to even wade up to my ankles. My next race is in a month and the swim is in a lake. It wasn't too long ago there was ice on it.

Just a thought, but at Knoxville I noticed a bunch of the pros had bands attached to something they were warming up with. If water is too cold, maybe the bands. At Knoxville they did not allow a warm-up prior to the swim other than the couple minutes between waves ..... Probably cuz it was too cold.

1:40 run done for the day.  I felt great this morning!!!!

I have been ravenous lately, eating anything and everything in the kitchen. I made BBQ pork ribs in the slow cooker yesterday (kids swim practice, soccer games, and other activities require slow cooker some days).  We had a few leftover ribs.  Guess who was shoving pork ribs in her mouth at 9 p.m. last night?  Seriously.  I felt like a kid sneaking the last cookie out of the cookie jar.  I can't get enough protein lately so I'm going with it.
