Nice run! My half marathon PB is 1:50 so doing it out there in the freezing temps is very impressive!

I am also quite off plan from the half iron plan this week - these things happen and really it's more about doing enough to feel confident at the start line

I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can keep my training up with all of the scheduling that goes into being a busy parent. I live near San Francisco, California, so there are plenty of great places for me to get outside and exercise.

I started doing triathlons because I was tired of being a couch potato, and needed to refocus my life and help with stress. I love to ride, and that is where I have focused most of my attention. I am currently working with a swim coach to help with efficiency. As for running, I am building my endurance and just taking it slow after a hamstring injury last year.

FAMILY STATUS: Single dad with three great boys.

CURRENT TRAINING: . I run, bike and swim between 2 to 3 times each week. Additionally, I see a swim coach once a week to help with form. I am training between 8-10 hours a week right now, but know that it will increase over the next few months. Right now I am really working on consistency, changing my diet, and staying healthy. With three little guys in the house with me, I am exposed to anything and everything under the sun that they bring home.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: I have three races this year that I am planning for, but that depends on drought conditions in California. Folsom Half Ironman on June 8; Vineman on July 27; and Austin Half in October. I am sure I will throw in a few sprints/Olympics for fun.

WEIGHTLOSS: I started at close to 200 lbs last year which was the most I ever weighed. After seeing my brother and dad at the holidays in 2012 I decided I needed to drop weight to stay healthy. Triathlons were a great fit for me. I just want to maintain weight now (180) but I am most likely going to drop another 10-15lbs over the next few months.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE: I am motivated to finish the Vineman in July. Because of my motivation, I will be checking the forums and plan on using BT to log my workouts.

Welcome Dan! I think you are in good shape now at 8-10 hours, but you'll probably want to bump it up soon.

I love the San Fran area. What a beautiful city!

Hi everyone! I am up and planning to run 18k this morning.  This week and next week are the last really long  runs before the half marathon.  It's cold but not too bad today.  Or we're just getting acclimated, i suppose.

Yesterday instead of biking I went to swim with my swim group since our wednesday swim was cancelled.  So this week will be low on bike but as mentioned i need to focus on running so no biggie.

Plus i am doing some home projects and finishing up hanging up textured wallpaper in my bedroom. My sister was helping yesterday and will come back.  It's my first time hanging wall paper and it's going okay. My hubby is building and nearly done a bed with drawers for us - and we need to paint our room so training may take a back seat for the next couple of weeks.

x2!  Welcome - i found that the main volume change in ironman training was not weekday training but long bikes and long runs.

Thanks for the welcome!

For me the running is where I am most concerned. Today will be a longer swim and an hour run. I just need to keep sticking to my training plan and realize that life will get in the way, but to remain focused as much as possible.

I agree on this one for sure. My weekday training for half IM is the same as for IM, it is just getting the distance in on the weekend.

Hi there,

I hope I am not too late to jump into this group.

NAME: Andrea

STORY: I have always enjoyed working out, but have never really considered myself athletic (My 2 brothers and 1 sister all played sports in school, but that wasn't really my thing). Last year 2 of my brothers signed up to do a tri in September with a cousin and I was excited to be a spectator. I had always assumed that was too much for me but around June of last year I learned about the sprint distance race and I thought, I can do that.

I "faux-trained" by starting to add running, biking and swimming to my normal weight and gym class routine and found that I really loved it. After watching my brothers compete I was sure I wanted to compete this year and started to increase the intensities of my workouts. I felt great. In November I was set to run my first 4m. I had a great first 2 miles of my run and then my calf started killing me. After walking the last 2 miles of the race I found out I had a stress fracture to my fibula. So the past 2 months I have been off of working out/training in total. For the last 3 weeks I am able to walk every other day without aggravating my healing leg and do a light weight lifting routine. Today I was able to swim (the way my fracture was makes pointing my foot or being up on the balls of my feet the most painful).

FAMILY STATUS: Married, almost 6 year old boy and a 2.5 year old girl.

CURRENT TRAINING: . Every other day, walk for 30 minutes followed by 30 minute weight routine. I am just trying to get back to a base at this point. I'll add swimming to the routine going forward as well.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: I am going to compete in 1 sprint race (although I toy with the Olympic) in August or September with my brothers.

WEIGHTLOSS: I know I could probably lose a few pounds, but I feel good and am not currently weighing myself. I may have substituted chocolate and whiskey for my training routine over the past few months and so I know I need to eat a bit cleaner as I start to train more.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE: I have really lost trust in my ability to plan a do-able training plan for myself given the stress fracture. I love to log things and will really be looking for suggestions that are do-able with 2 kids, working, and healing. I am excited and nervous to compete and hope to learn from others who are on the same journey.

Welcome Andrea!

Finally seem to be getting back into the swing of things- last week turned into more of an off week than I wanted, mainly due to weather.
Yesterday I got in a solid 45 minutes on the trainer and then this morning I got in 3.5 miles (was hoping for closer to 5) but in the end the cold won out. My phone said it was 10 degrees (f) at the time I went out but my Garmin reported back -2 so who knows- it was cold. Getting in another run tomorrow morning before we get hit by yet another storm (hearing anywhere between 6 and 14 inches on Wednesday night/Thursday.

I need to suck it up and register for the 1/2 marathon I want to do in April- it will help me stay focused (especially if I want to go under 2 hours). I also need to sit down and register for the triathlons I'm going to do this summer. Some major expenses (new water heater) have let me paused on both of these.

Stay warm all.

Welcome - keep coming back when you can and let us know how it is going!

I think you're on the right track - and for many of us it is difficult to know how to build carefully and respect our bodies' limits.

YES! Register for your race! It'll add an extra dimension for getting those runs done!

It's only 3 weeks until my half.  And i am nervously watching the weather forecast until it shows up. The next couple of weeks appear to be getting warmer but look messy for snow and rain :S  - Please let March 2 be a reasonable day.

My running buddy and i had a conversation about race strategy which is good. She doesn't feel too fit and I want to baseline my fitness and push to see where i am at  so i think we'll start together and depending on how we feel we probably won't stay together through the race.  These conversations are very important!

Got in a quick testing run this morning, though I did cut it short on account of it being -4. I was happy to do 1.8 miles (3K) at 8:43/mile. Incoming storm again for tomorrow so it'll be back on the trainer and then hopefully a swim on Friday if the pool opens on time.

Got in a 1 hr trainer ride on Sunday,
Monday off day,
Tuesday 2500 yds in pool, 45 min run on treadmill
Wed 1 hr on spin bike, 30 min run on treadmill.

Training going good so far, I have 2 different weeks of my work schedule. This week I am a lot closer to home and I can stop into the gym to workout when I have time. It also makes it nice so when I get home at night My wife can go workout since I already have for the day.

Out of town this weekend so will be a run fest.

Good morning!

So, i've been keeping busy and quite productive, i think. The house is a mess but my textured wall paper and painting looks quite good

So, for the ladies with babies and breastfeeding I put the question out to my swim coach who is a pro triathlete and new mom - the question about keeping energy up while training and breastfeeding.  I've been feeling a little sluggish since ramping up my training a bit.  She didn't have a ton of info but a woman in one of her other swim sessions has been writing a book about athletes and pregnancy and the months after baby with someone else so she connected us.

She confirmed that there isn't a ton of research out there so here are the highlights of what she told me:

  • the common advice is 400-500 calories per day and that seems to hold
  • energy will first go to milk production and then to the mom
  • so calorie consumption is quite important - try to balance off additional need from exercise
  • some evidence that additional protein will assist (mostly anecdotal)
  • should take some care to keep calcium and iron up

Other than that she stressed that rest is also important especially if sleep is impacted - so basically take care of yourself and back off training if you're feelling overly fatigued.

Also that your baby will be a great cue as to how things are going -

  • is your baby pulling or acting frustrated when breastfeeding?
  • is your baby continuing to gain weight and grow?

These are general milk supply cues but are things to monitor.

* i am not a doctor or a lactation consultant but most of these are common knowledge - if you are concerned you should check with your doctor, lactation consultant, etc.

I have been noticing a huge increase in my appetite over the past three weeks as I start increasing my volume. Are there favorite snacks you like to munch on in the afternoon? I have been ripping my house apart eating everything in sight (not quite but the imagery is useful).

Thanks for the info Jen! I take iron supplements too- I tend to become a bit anemic when training long distance so I've been taking them as soon as training started to get more frequent, I think it really helps. I try to drink as much water as possible too as other mom's I know who train said they found it really helped keep up supply. I also find now that we are on a good schedule and only up once in the night it makes the supply issue easier and the sleep issue isn't really a problem. I definitely was worried when I got back into the training mode but now being in it for the last 6-7 weeks I haven't noticed a difference in supply which is good!

Ahh I miss those days while training for IM that I would eat so much but still feel hungry and still see the transformation in my body! I love pepperoni sticks & hard boiled eggs- I seem to crave protein..... hummus and pitas are always good for a heavier snack too!

What type of running shoes do you guys use??

I'm a Saucony Kinvara 3 lover and then they made the 4's....that fit totally different!!!! Not impressed, I think it's so important as a runner we should be able to find a shoe and keep buying it!!!
So I was fitted at a store and made the switch to the Cortana to only find after 2 months of wearing it that I was fitted wrong and given the wrong info about the shoe which was causing me pain.....So I went back to my old Kinvara's and had no pain....Unable to return the $175 shoe which have only about 75km on them & Without getting into the bad customer service I received from Saucony, I went out to try and find a new shoe....only to resort back to Saucony but now the Virratta ..... So now it's a love/hate relationship with them, my feet love them but I don't....but what can ya do.....

On the old garmin topic- I found this new gps that's coming out called the Bia http://www.bia-sport.com/it seems to be a new up and coming watch that isn't released just yet.... YOu can buy it at an introductory price as it helps back the product....but with that comes countless upgrades to it and softwear as it's still in the semi-trial phase which seems like could be a pain....it seems pretty nice but i'm hesistant to go with something totally new....has anyone heard about them before??

I also heard Polar has the RS800 which the shoe shop I was at recommended....The coaches I did my IM training camp through used the Polar RCX5 triathlete watch and seemed to really like it and said they have better battery time then Garmin....So the search is still on, gotta find some time to read reviews on each to see which I might like better!

I love my Brooks Adrenalines. I've been buying each new pair for about 5 years. I think I have a new pair of XII's sitting in the box which I got on Black Friday weekend when I had a coupon THey're relatively inexpensive (about $100). I love them!

We're buried in another foot of snow from yesterda. This is not typical NJ weather. Got in a very quick ride on the trainer this morning but hoping for more this weekend.

OT- trying to work from home with a 14 month old was all sorts of chalenging, but he did participate in his first conference call yesterday!

I have been a wearer of Asics for a very long time now.  I still have a pair of the 2170's and just got a pair of the 2000's which seem to work.  I wear a narrow width shoe and usually I can get these or New Balance and I've had no issue with the Asics so i keep going to them.

I was talking with the manager of my local Running Room and he said that Saucony did a huge redesign of their shoes which have put all the other shoe companies in a position to do the same.

My running buddy likes Brooks as well. But i've never felt the motivation to try anything new.  I haven't had any running injuries or issues in some time ...

NAME: Rachel

FOCUS: Complete my first triathlon in 2014!

STORY: I’m 29 years old and looking to up my fitness plan. I have been married for 3 years, moved to a new city right after getting married and learned that making friends is hard the older you get! I’d love to join this group because the thought of women mentors who have so much experience is comforting. I do not have any children yet, but hope that doesn’t keep me from the group!

I was a basketball player, swimmer and golfer throughout high school and continued golfing in college. Since getting married my fitness level has decreased significantly. I began practicing hot yoga last year and have absolutely fallen in love, but I have hit a plateau and am looking for a more challenging and fun activity. I figured why not train for a triathlon and try to learn a new discipline, if possible. I’m a bit overwhelmed right now b/c I’m trying to read all I can and it is a lot of information to take in at first. I thought a mentor group could help me focus and stay accountable.

FAMILY STATUS: Married, 2 dogs & a cat.

CURRENT TRAINING: I am new to tri training, but I am eager to learn all I can and get started! I’m not sure where exactly to start, but I think I’m just going to pick one and go. I’m the most worried about the biking and running. I’ve always loathed running and that is one hurdle I’m working to overcome.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: None scheduled yet, but I’d like to complete my first triathlon by the fall.

Hi Rachel! Welcome! You've got quite a bit of a head start I'm triathlon having been a swimmer already. It is a big challenge to undertake but it is manageable and despite all of the info out there it can be kept simple.

At least to start... haha, once you get hooked it's a slippery slope of fancy bikes, increasing volume and expanding sport nutrition needs!

So, how's everyone doing? It's kind of quiet around here.

I have a distracting home project: painting our bedroom and getting it prepped for the new bed frame my husband built. I did have an excellent run this morning - the longest for half marathon training at 20k. It was really cold this morning and it snowed the whole time. Then it's been sunny the rest of the day. Anyway, i feel in good shape to run somewhere close to 2 hours on race day!!

I have been noticing a huge increase in my appetite over the past three weeks as I start increasing my volume. Are there favorite snacks you like to munch on in the afternoon? I have been ripping my house apart eating everything in sight (not quite but the imagery is useful).

Ahh I miss those days while training for IM that I would eat so much but still feel hungry and still see the transformation in my body! I love pepperoni sticks & hard boiled eggs- I seem to crave protein..... hummus and pitas are always good for a heavier snack too!

I hiked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine and could eat the same way. We would eat 3-5k calories a day and drink beer as much as we wanted and I still lost 35 pounds in the 6 months it took me to hike.

Our DS has quite a bit of allergies so we have to stay pretty healthy, my wife and DS are dairy, gluten, soy, peanut, Free at the moment. We eat a lot of Oats, my wife gets a lot of recipes from Mywholefoodlife.com , they are really good.
I like to munch on Tortilla chips and popcorn, those are my go too's

I'm a Saucony Kinvara 3 lover and then they made the 4's....that fit totally different!!!! Not impressed, I think it's so important as a runner we should be able to find a shoe and keep buying it!!!

Started with 2 pair of the Brooks Adrenalines
Switched to Saucony Guides
Switched to Asics,

Don't know where I will go next, felt great in Brooks, Asics

Fact is, it's tough. Best bet is to do the training that you can, and let the chips fall where they may.

The start of the race I had the jitters. I was watching the other age groups start as they seeded the swim with over 1000 participants.
