Yes, but it's not exercise induced. Usually related to the air quality. Right now is the end of one growing season and beginning of another, so there's a lot of burning to clear the rice fields of debris or whatever before the next crop. Chlorine can definitely be an issue too if the pool's not well ventilated--not bad yesterday but had felt wheezy on and off all day. Oddly, it's rarely an issue while running and biking, sometimes after, or at night after. I think swimming is harder because you have to get into a definite rhythm with breathing, and that can be hard! Swimming very easy or very hard is less of an issue--it's that middle ground that can be tough. Should have just used the inhaler before the workout. It just feels weird for a few minutes if you do that.

Going "off the air" (well, out of the pool, out of the thread) until Saturday due to school trip. No pool, and the only lake has crocs. Plus I need to ride herd on 60 ten year olds from 6 AM to 10 PM. "Recovery" week by default! Happy swimming, everyone!

Speed sets? Have fun!

Anyway, having stomach cramps show up quite frequently late in a swim or right afterward. Hoping it's been the cold medication as that will stop very soon. Otherwise not really sure what kind of dietary thing it could be as this was largely taken care of before by making adjustments there.

2750m down last night.  Going from 25 yds to m is different.  I can feel the little extra distance I get with each lap.

Total is now 31,650m.

Is it 1 or 2 extra stokes for you.? I have rarely swam yards in the last 15 years.

Would any of you care to share your lap counting technique with me?  I'm hopeless, and I need to do a 1650 TT, but I don't know how to keep track of my laps.

"Just count" does not work

If I get lost then I glance at my Garmin Swim.

Btw, I rode with Francois last weekend for the first time.  He's a powerful cyclist to say the least!

I bet that was fun!  Is he going to coach you this season?

I count by 50, and repeat "1 of 5", "2 of 5", "3 of 5".  sometimes I screw that up too.  So, much to the consternation of my coach, I use my watch.  I know I swim approx 2:00 per 100, so when approximately 6min is up, I have swum 300m.

OK, I need to figure out how to look at my watch while I'm swimming.  I know this shouldn't be such an ordeal, but, well... :)

I listen to music when I swim and I thought maybe I could make a playlist that was close to the time I think I'm going to finish.  If I'm *only* off by a 50 or 100 out of 1650, I don't really care, as it's just really a test to see how my endurance is going.

Have you tried counting by 50's?  I don't think I have ever counted by single laps or 1-2-3-4.  So 2 laps is 50, 4 laps 100 and so on.

I've kinda tried everything.  I think I am concentrating a lot on form, so I just get distracted.

Not to be dense here, but what do you say to yourself at the wall when you finish a 50?  1? or do you count by twos?

50.... just concentrate on the increment you are on.  So first two laps all you need to remember is 50, next two laps is 100.  I'm not sure if it's the best way.  It's just the way I was taught when I was little and the way every program I was in works.  If I drift off for some reason and can't remember I tend to punish myself.  If I can't be sure I am at 400 or 450 it's always the lower number.  That way I know I'm at least not short changing myself.  Or I could do what my coaches would, "DO IT OVER MORON!"

That was HS / College or as we now refer to it - back in the day.  Don't hesitate, get to a masters session.  I wish I could make the masters practice time.  Swimming in a group / program setting is much more rewarding quality wise.  I swim mostly by myself (with music like you) but when I can meet up with someone it's so much better.

Then again I'd be happy to just get in the pool.  I'm on crutches and can't do anything at the moment.  I was told initially I have plantars fasciitis so I figured I would get to spend some quality time in the pool.  With no improvement the last few days and from what I've read I think it's something else.   I'm starting to think I'm laid up for awhile.

It was fun averaging 25.7 MPH for 30 minutes.  If only I could do that without drafting.

As a long-time sufferer of PF, and now some other weird lower leg (possibly achilles) issues, I really , really feel your pain.  Damn.

Do you have any idea what it could be?

I do on the 15th.  400m pool swim, 10 mile bike, 3 mile run.

Going to be a fun ~50 mins!

"50 down, going for 100, 100 down, going for 150," and so on, and so on when I turn at the wall after each 50. I really could use a lap counter or swim Garmin as this doesn't work 100% of the time. I'm actually better at counting for long swims than short, maybe because I would normally do a long TT on the weekend when it's not after a 9-hour workday. It's pretty normal for me to lose count between 100 and 200m on a weekday swim! If in doubt, I pull up for a second (at the wall) and check my watch.. Usually math/logic will tell me how far I've swum.

Not a clue. In the ER they said PF since X-rays were negative. Which at that point I thought fine with what little I know back in the pool after a few days and bike in a week. Figured I'd be able to ramp all that up with no running for awhile. It's been 3 days and it's only getting worse and more swollen. Even with Vicodin there's no relief and can't walk. I started a thread in TT to see what kind of warning signs people who have/had this noticed because this was totally out of the blue. Doc appt tomorrow am so hopefully that will shed some light. Holding out hope I'll be back in the pool at least shortly. Now go sign up for a masters swim.

3,250 at masters last night. Back to seeing 2:30's for 200s. At least for the limited amount we had. Also seeing 1:15-16 on the 100's even though parts of them had more skill concentration.

I think quite truly for the first time I 'get it'. It's not just about the fitness. It's not just about the great little endorphin rush as you hit 5, 10, 15 miles...its not just the medal at the end.
