So remove my Friday Run, add my Monday Run. 6 miles on the treadmill. How are you guys dressing to run in the cold? I about froze in 30 degree with wind on Sunday. I think I need more layers but curious if there was some other key to winter running.

I have a New Balance pullover that is wind and water resistant (basically the older version of this: http://www.newbalance.com/pd/windblocker-half-zip/MRT4306.html?dwva... Blue_with_Black). I've found that I can use it down to about 30 degrees with nothing under it, or down to the teens with just a long-sleeve running shirt under it. I usually wear tights or running pants down to about 30, and tights under running pants below that. Also an Under Armour fleece hat, Brooks HVAC gloves, and wool socks. I generally don't run outside when it's under 15-20 degrees.

I'd be sweating in those clothes. Ran the week of New Years (in the Berkshires for my friend in Mass. no less) in 18 degree weather with tights, Under Armour cold gear mock turtleneck and a ruling running vest, gloves and a hat. Below 15 I put on a jacket. The key is stay dry - once you get wet you will never warm up.

X2 under 60 I will put on a windbreaker.
under 50 add socks and tights,
under 40 add hat and gloves
under 30 add under armour ceramic mock turtle neck
under 10 add a balaclava.
I used long underwear once doing a 15 mile nighttime trail race in January and the temp at race time was a tropical 5F.

  • this is very very important. On my coldest run at -25c (-13f) I wore too much and ended up sweating and getting very very cold. I had to run and slap my thighs to try and keep the muscles warm. If you want to run in the cold be sure to wear thinner layers so you can regulate your temperature. Its better to stay a little cool. Freezing water bottles also suck when you are an hour away from home.

This is why I have a treadmill in the basement now.

Tape a hand warmer to the bottle and keep one in the pocket with the Gels. Frozen gels suck.

Beth- I’m going to Academy tonight for sure. Tomorrow is supposed to be in the low 30’s and I have a 1hr base run tomorrow and a 2hr long run on Saturday and there is no way I’m running on the treadmill that long. 10 years ago in preparation for my first full marathon I use to run the treadmill daily for an hr+ and I really think I burned myself out on the treadmill long runs. 30 min or less I’m good with, just no more long runs.
By the way my niece works at Academy and she gets a 20% discount. Doesn’t do me a lot of good when she lives in Austin and I live in Houston.

Yesterday I managed to finish a 10k race in Valledupar, Colombia.
I said managed, because it was really hot and the race started at 4pm, the hottest part of the day. It felt like running a marathon, really. The race was not timed though, only the winner was timed, I suppose. No electronic chips or anything. My time was about 55' according tho my family watches, not even stop watches... Had to walk few times toward the end, the heat really got me, but it was fun, in fact more fun than most of the races I did where you really care about time and are mostly frustrated because of it.
We ran through the streets to the cheering of the crowd, cops were stopping traffic as we crossed intersections, sometimes not very good, but no accidents, nobody got agro or anything. One major difference about the traffic here is that while it's chaotic, nobody gets angry, no fingers shown, abuse etc. I like that.

I am in Florida for the Disney marathon and took an easy 30 minute run around the hotel. I'll be on the iPad for the next few days, and it won't let me copy the list, so I am just updating mine and will be doing so through Monday!

Nice to be able to run in shorts and a tee outside ))

42' dreadmill runch - running negatives for all 5 miles. Likely not a smart move as I'm likely getting sick. Hope it's just a cold and not the flu.

I guess it's official...recived my race number for the Tour of Sufferlandria (ToS) today. What a quality organization - they were able to get some cool bling on mine to highlight my Michigan and Navy affinities.

That is awesome! The ToS is such a great idea, especially as I look at my window now at 5 PM to see only darkness and hear the howl of frozen winds. I don't have all the videos and trainer equipment for this year's tour, but maybe next year. Best of luck to all who are participating, can't wait to hear about all the suffering.

The great thing about the Tour of Sufferlandria is that they use it as a vehicle to raise money for the Davis Phinney Foundation.

"About the Davis Phinney Foundation: We are committed to supporting programs and research that deliver inspiration, information and tools that will enable people living with Parkinson’s to take more control in managing their disease. The Davis Phinney Foundation was founded in 2004 by Olympic medal-winner and cycling great, Davis Phinney, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2000 at the age of 40. Today, Davis is both a role model in the cycling community and an inspiration to the estimated 1.5 million Americans and estimated 10 million worldwide who are currently living with the disease. Our mission to help people living with Parkinson’s to live well today makes us unique in the Parkinson's community. The Davis Phinney Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to putting every dollar to work to fulfill our mission. We operate without an endowment and rely on direct support from individuals, foundations and corporations. - See more at: DavisPhinneyFoundation.org - See more at: http://dpf.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=1123701&lis=0&kn...

This is very personal for me as my father passed away this year after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. I wasn't aware of the higher purpose that the ToS serves until I went to officially sign up. With that in mind I am looking to raise additional money for the Davis Phinney Foundation. Anyone interested can click on the link below and help those who deal with this disease.

Thanks and if I have upset anyone with this post I apologize in advance.

Nice to be able to run in shorts and a tee outside ))

Melissa, it's very easy. Tap and hold the finger on selected section, adjust it and choose 'copy', then paste wherever you tap next.

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
