Here's a novel idea for the virginia group ride on the 21st... SKYLINE DRIVE.  I google mapped it, and Richmond and Tysons are less than 2 hours from the Northern Part of Shannendoah National Park, and I'm 2 hours and 22 minutes... and I've always heard what a spectacular place to ride it is... and it's always been something I wanted to do.  What say you?

Oh, I know where it is. The ex used to cycle there a lot - which is what makes me nervous. He's really awesome, and I'm very much not! I might die...I hear it's a lot of steep downhill. But I'll have to look into it. Worst comes to worst, you guys can ride without me and I will just do a longer, but safer ride on the outer section of the W&OD, or something.

Plus, I don't know that I'm fast enough to actually ride in the road with fast moving traffic - it's one thing to have to ride in the street around here for a block or two, or ride in a bike lane (like along River Road in MD) but winding country roads just seem to scream danger for me, since I'm not very experienced.

TriAya - 2007-07-18 6:49 AM My apologies for the spoiler. Will also post thought in team leaders/rules thread.

I see your mate Mauricio Soler did well last night for Team Barloworld. I wouldn't be too worried about apologising for bragging in other team threads, that's all part of the challenge. I say brag away!!!!

Did you see the dog that ran out onto the race course and caused one of my T-Mobile guys to crash?? The dog was fine but you should have seen the front wheel of this guy’s bike. It was a crumpled mess. If we’re not crashing into road barriers, we’re crashing into animals, unbelievable.

GO GO T-Mobile!!!

Yikes! I did see that. Sadly reminiscent of Barloworld's own sf_biggestloser losing his bike to a deer vs. bike collision ... like your Marcus Burghardt, he's also persisting in the Tour, except he's stuck on a stationary now!

Hi - there has been a few requests in the last 24 hours to STOP posting live TDF updates in team threads. This is due to a lot of people wanting to watch the action later in the day WITHOUT knowing the results. (thanks TriAya for the heads up)

Would enough people be interested in taking the live action related discussions to another thread out of the team threads to avoid this issue? Team leaders can you please let me know?

I must admit Im probably the most guilty of this as I genuinely want teams to know whats happening with their pro counterparts to really get into it... and with me watching it live til 2am then heading straight it bed I get REALLY excited and post results...

But... its more a time difference related head spin. I totally understand having to delay watching the action... I know not everyone can devote their whole life to TDF action for a month!

So my suggestion... is this....

1) No results from the previous nights stage will be posted in any Team thread until the next days stage starts... giving everyone 24 hours to watch the action or at least KNOW what to expect

2) Set up a seperate TDF Challenge - Live Action thread for teams to talk about their pro riders... (if there is enough interest)

3) If teams are happy to have stage updates posted in their Team thread let me know and I will continue - otherwise 24 hour code of silence applies to EVERYONE taking part in the challenge

What do you all think?

Where did anyone make a comment about you being new and that causing a problem?  No one was like "OMG...you newbs suck and shouldn't be allowed here."  It doesn't have anything to do with you being new and other people being "real" cyclists.  It has to do with people honestly not wanting to know and hoping others will be courteous enough to respect that.

wurkit_gurl - 2007-07-17 3:23 PM Oops, TriAya. Guess us newbies can't have fun anymore because the 'real' cyclists around here might get mad. Whatever...my ex boyfriend who is a SERIOUS bike snob (and could probably kick anyone's a$$ here) watched all gazillion hours every single night of the dang race and most of the time already knew who'd won - and it didn't seem to ruin it for him cuz he sat there and watched the entire thing - every night.

ALL RIGHT PRO BARLOWWORLD!!! My DH told me when I got in from a butt-kicking shift in the wonderful ER (was so stressed that I thought about a 7 mile runwhen I got home but it was 8 PM when I walked in the door and I have to be back there tomorrow at 7 for acute MI chart review committee--vested interest for me since DH manages the cath lab at the same hospital)

Skyline Drive sounds awesome, however it's way too far for me with the dang call thing (on call is forced mandatory OT to cover call offs and insanity in the department if you get called in, otherwise it's just a few bucks extra in the old paycheck) (I only work to pay for my training habit needs, like the bathing suits that have worn out and sneakers...bike stuff... oh yeah, groceries)

Madcow, Lake Anna is at least 90 minutes from where I live. I've heard of it but have never been there (only lived here for a few years, I'm originally from NY but have lived in MD and PA) I can look into the area and try to answer your questions though. How was your race last weekend any way?

Another bike ride in the books. This one was 30 minutes, which is entirely too short but until I get a bike it is going to be about the most I can log in a single day. Homeowners insurance states by the end of the week.

Ok as I mentioned earlier I have set up a thread to discuss the results of your team in the tour... its in the challenge forum and I suggest you use it to talk about the teams successes and make sure everyone else see's it!!

As I suggested earlier there is to be no talking about the previous stage in team threads UNTIL the next stage commences....

Please get in on the action its been very entertaining so far, and remember to take it in the spirit of fun and team spirit it is intended.

Happy Cycling

I was bummed by the spoiler too. Honestly, and I know I shouldn't think this way about my team, but I didn't expect the winner to be from Barloworld, so didn't think it would be posted here.

I guess it serves me right for checking the thread at work. My wife will be happy.

The GOOD thing though is that wasnt the most exciting part of the stage!!!! (in case you still havent seen it I will keep my trap shut for another 2 hours)

How are all of my Barlo-buddies doing this morning? I swam today and have a bible study tonight, so will get in a short run. No biking today, but back on track tomorrow morning. Had to get in the swim practice with my friend who is playing swim coach. I plan to rock a super-long ride this Saturday (with or without Barlo-peeps, prolly without at this point) and try to squeeze in a good two hours before church on Sunday - friend is coming to town and she wants to hit museums so the rest of the day is out.

Totally right, I enjoyed every second! Its funny to hear the announcers forget about someone you already know is going to win.

I saw a headline about Mcwen crashing and winning his stage before I watched it and doubted what I had read. It was very exciting waiting for him to come through and not knowing how it was possible.

This time there was plenty of excitement in the overall, but I'll stay away from the new thread anyway.

That crumpled wheel was amazing, I guess they are not built to be strong that way.

WAY TO GO BARLOWORLD!!!!!

We are #1 in the BT TdF Challenge standings.  I knew it!!!

We are definitely #1 in terms of team spirit, support, and functioning as a team, so in that respect we are way ahead of the "pro" Barloworlders (and most of the rest of the TdF teams there and here, as well, come to think of it).

And we continue to let everybody else know we are #1 by being #1 in the smacktalk, too!

Something tells me most of the teams will finish 100% of their stages ... so of course we'll be among that ... but like our hero JMS Hernandez, let's continue to forge ahead, stay in the lead the whole way, and finish strong.

Judi the SmackTalkLess is really pumping her legs instead of her mouth ... she continues to lead the IMPORTANT charge ... let's draft!!!

And no fears - I will definitely finish all of my 15 rides. That just means that I have to ride every single day until the 26th (as I won't be around the 27th-29th and we're leaving very early on the 27th so I can't get in a ride before we leave) and double up on one day, since I didn't ride today. That's okay I will also try to get in rides of some length, though before/after work I'm limited to about 2 hours tops.

TriAya--I love that...people at work would NEVER believe me to be smacktalkless (not would by family) seems the mouth runs a lot (qnd I wonder where my daughters get it from?)

Get drafting

Got a short run in this afternoon. Heat and humidity killed me on my loop back so I took a few walk breaks to keep HR/RR in a safe pattern.

Fuji is back from the shop. I intend to ride tomorrow after my swim and a visit to my allergist to get the inhalers straight (long story, hate insurance companies saying what meds a person can take when the doc has reasons for choosing the "non formulary" med in the first place and why should a pt have to endure less than adequate control of their condition to prove to an insurance co that the formulary meds don't do the job?)

How hot are WE!!!!

It does, however, have some general Tour stuff so if you ain't seen the coverage, don't read the news yet.

Glad to see we're all still getting those rides in! Made a hair over an hour today, not riding since Monday morning killed me on the hills (not to mention riding into a good headwind) but I didn't give up...

Mark, I'm hoping your wife is going to deliver soon. I spent my pregnancies thinking they were a prison sentence (ya know at 20 weeks time served is greater than time remaining...)

Plan on riding tonight after work, rain or shine (rain will be indoors). Tomorrow is supposed to be really nice, so I think I'm gonna be ambitious and do a big chunk of the W&OD - maybe 40 miles round trip. And might throw in a quick little ride in the late afternoon just for good measure, to catch back up. This week has been super busy at work and with the bible study on top of it, it's really killed me. Friend is coming into town on Sunday, but am planning a ride before church.

Don't worry, Triaya - I know that we don't have a ton of fans on this board. And I don't really care. The most important thing will be that we all finish all the rides we committed to, whether they're all centuries, or just a spin around the block. I'm pretty much over the fact that I'm just a newbie - I've had plenty of people (in real life, anyway, not necessarily here) looking down on my athletic ability and telling me I can't do certain things. Proving them wrong, even a little, is fine enough for me. I'm pretty impressed with the fact that I did a 2-day 80 mile ride with clipless pedals for the first time, stayed steadily in the middle of the group and only fell once. AND I could walk the next day. For someone who'd had a road bike for about a month, that's pretty darned good. I could care less what anyone else thinks of me. The fact that I'm doing it, and doing quite well should be enough.
