If you like rain. It has rained all week. I'm getting a bit tired of it. Fortunately, it seems to come in waves, so there is usually some times during the day where it is possible to get a mostly dry run in. Sometimes that even coincides with when I have time to run. If only my boss didn't mind if I said, 'Hey! it's not raining! Back in an hour!" So far, that's not a go. I shouldn't complain. She lets me flex my schedule around my trainer sessions.

I had a pair of shoes just a touch too small and ya it hurt my 2nd toe in, but only on my right foot. It takes like a year to grow a new one once they turn all black and such (the nail not the toe).

Really low engergy day today, I even went to bed an hour early lastnight. Perhapse it is because I am stuck in my office preparing a 40 or so page report for Monday. Don't ya hate it after an hour presentation on a very complex topic with like 10000 data points when the only comment is, "you know you have a typo on page 39, paragraph 3, sentence 4, word 9 it should be an(d) not an?"

And you reply, oh, in that case I guess we should not purchase the property, I see your point an(d) that does make a substantial change in the long term viability of the venture. Ok back to work.

8) I have always loved the part where folks completely ignore the message because they don't like a word or a comma. Man would it suck to actually be that person. (fomral appology to any ocd english teachers that love to make 2nd graders cry that may be in this forrum).

Well a long 35 miles biked on the trainer tonight... ya I know this is the run team, but I have to stay well rounded or I will become just rounded. Tomorrow is a day off and Saturday is a longer bike ride or... down hill skiing. Tough choice there.

Hey... isn't downhill skiing really just running down a hill with very long shoes on? I vote that it counts

The skiing should be fabulous this weekend. It's too bad my kids have a swim meet and I have to run 26 miles this weekend.

Ouche 26 miles in a weekend. Thats nearly my whole week. And double WOW I just looked at your proposed race schedule for 08.

Last year in Vail ther is a run that is like 3 miles. Do that 8x and hey that 24 miles right. Running all done.

Have safe runs, some day I too will have endurance 8).

Question for you guys - I have been having arch pain for almost a year now.  Doesn't feel like plantar fasciatis (sp?).  Running isn't so  bad once I get going. First thought of course would be that it is my shoes but I have had them professionally fit and usually get new ones after 300-400 miles.  Any ideas?

Arch pain sounds like PF.  Especially if it's been a year going.  Maybe just have it looked at by a sports med. PT?

Was able to get out this morning and do my 11 with only 4 tempo.  Supposed to have been 6 tempo but fatigue was high.  Think I'm still not 100% over the bug I got.  But was able to average 6:36 for the tempo.

Another 4 mile revovery run on the schedule for this evening.  I do believe this will be my first ever double run in my fitness history!

It's the longest I've ever gone in a single day. They say ignorance is bliss. If I had realized that I was going to have to spend 4-5 hours every weekend just to get ready for a marathon, I'm not sure I would have EVER had the guts to actually start this.

And then up that to a IM. GAWD.

Doesn't anyone in this team sleep? What's up w/ the 4 am posts?

Ok so given that I am a newb, and addressing the arch question. I read that running in flats can help with both form and with strengthening the arch of the foot and some other relevant muscles. Some have said that 10 percent of your running in flats is good for these issues. Also, if you have or put in arch supports it is supposed to make arch problems worse. Funy how that all works or doesn't.

Anyway I run 10 percent in flats mine are Fivefinger shoes, although I have no fingers on my feet. They have absolutely no padding whatsoever, just a rubber tread protection for your foot as I am not patient enough to build up the calluses that barefoot running would involve. I think it was waterdog that had some info on this stuff. But also I agree that having a doc look at the problem may be a first step, just be weary of orthopedic inserts if that is what he recommends. I have read that they tend to weaken the arch muscles rather than strengthening them.

Well that's it all of my wisdom darined in one post. Hope things settle down there.

Oh and I didn't win 7 am PST. I am still holding onto the false hope that I can do all my workouts at night. I am fast approaching the... thats not gona get it done wall. I may have to cave and start some am workouts, at least some short ones.

I have never thought about flats.  Arch supports do make it worse.  I was thinking maybe using one of those massaging things that you roll under your foot??

GO team GO

I am 40% there - I'm not sure what is on tap this weekend.  Tomorrow would be an outside day but I have a spin class mid morning and I don;t like running in the dark so early am treadmill possible - party Saturday night means no treadmill in the morning.  I need the elliptical handlebars to hold on after a night of drinking. If weather cooperates I will get out for a mid-day run.

If you have a marathon stick for your legs it works well on the arches of your foot as well, you just have to take care to not run over bones with it or it feels a bit uncomfortable. You get the same slightlyl painful ahhhhh I think thats doing something right on your feet as you do on your calves or thighs and it should feel better the next day if its just undue muscle tension and knots. Anyway, it is what I do based on what I have read. You can pm watedog he is very knowledgable about all this stuff.

Other thoughts would be heat, cold and compression from those ace bandage things for recovery from longer runs, some doctors might recomend 600 to 800 mg of ibprophin for the muscle relaxant quality for really bad days, but probably not for chronic issues (<- not a medical doctor).

I have read that chronic problems is 1) running form, 2) the shoes fixed by flat running 10 %, or a medical problem that only the doc can talk to you about.

The shoe guys tend to want to sell you arche supports cuz they make $$ and it doesn't fix the problem, it further weakenes the "bowing" effect of a healthy arch. Again all I know I am just the newb on the block... but I read stuff.

Speaking of reading, I was looking at a running magazine... and the vast majority of the pictures of runners in it had bad form, major heal stikers, overstriding, etc. That is supposed to cause 55% ish more impact on the knees, add to ibt (shin splint) band or whatever problems, arch weakneess, etc.

The flats also help calves, achilies, etc., but you need to gradually work into them, very short or you get those underworked muscled very unhappy with you.

Everyone is doing amazing!  Keep up the great work.

I had a hectic day at work, but still managed to get my workout in... It was a bike ride on the trainer, but it was still a workout!  I'll be back to running tomorrow.  I'm on goal/target.  Should make it with no problem.
