alcatrazswimmer - 2010-11-03 8:14 AM I wanted to thank Kathy G and Amy for their encouraging words. This will be the first race I have been at where I will not know anyone and the encouragement was helpful. I will be stay a couple miles down the road at the Days inn, on the beach, as the Boardwalk would only let you book 4 nights and I needed only 3. I am very concerned about the weather. It does not look good at all. However there is still time for it change. I arrive tomorrow AM about 11:00am or 12:00PM. I going right to check in then to the expo. After that I have to check in at the hotel. After that I would like to go for a swim and/or drive the course. If anyone wants to get together or reach me then can at 414-467-1464. Matt

Matt, if you'll wear your BT gear you'll be surprised at how many BT  people are here and will visit with you.
Why don't you join us on the boardwalk for a little swim Friday morning?
Jasha

Printed boarding passes for crack-o-dawn flight tomorrow. Totally unfocused at work. Will overpack gear and sort it out at the hotel.

Anyone else at the Sterling Resorts-Laketown Wharf?

I'm here!

And the nerves are hitting.  Big time.  I was fine until we got to the baltimore airport and were waiting for our flight down.  At least half of my flight was here for the IM (racing or spectating).  The flight attendant said when we landed "If you are here for the ironman goodluck... you are crazy"

Going to register after lunch and will try for a swim later this afternoon.  I'm going to join for a swim tomorrow.

Jasha,

I would love to meet you for the swim. At what time? Like I was saying before I will at the Days Inn 2 miles down the road. I can just drive up and meet you there at whatever time. My phone number is 414-467-1464. I do not have a BT shirt yet. They were encouraging me because of my DNF in St. George. My confidence was faltering. That was a very hard course and being from WI where there was no where to ride outside complicated matters more along with the altitude issues. But that was the past. I am hoping for success here. I am good at swimming the ocean. I am not super fast but I am very very good at navigation and swimming in rough wavy conditions, and or currents, so I am not worried about that. I really need to go for a swim to test out a new wet suit that I bought. I leave Milwaukee 6 AM to tomorrow arrive to Pensacola at 10:26 AM. Then i am driving over and getting all checked in. I will see you then. Are you all staying at the boardwalk?

Matt

Is anyone else staying at the Days' Inn?

Hey Akarkerski, I have my boarding passes too thank God I do not have to work as I am a mess too, I don't know where to start.

ironeric2010 - 2010-11-03 9:28 AM Am I the only one who is concerned with the lack of light at swim start?

In this race tinted goggles are a must, but it is REALLY dark at 7 am right now.  The difference in time change this year is adding a wrinkle I did not think would be this problematic.  What is the distance to the first run bouy?  I mean, 7+ minutes just straight out, no navigation in almot dark is doable, but certainly not ideal.

Sunrise is going to be at 6:30, so I would imagine that it won't be an issue for the 7 a.m. start.  I'm just bought a pair of metallized goggles, as the sun coming over the horizon will be pretty fierce.

Time change (end of DST) doesn't go into effect until Sunday, so also not an issue, unless you finish after midnight Wink

I'm heading out this afternoon and hope to be down there around 10 p.m.   Good luck folks!

Sunrise is right at 7am on Saturday I thought.  Should be able to see.

Boy, the weather here stinks today!  I'm an hour away at Eglin and it's raining cats and dogs!  Better today than Saturday though!   Maybe it will wash all the crud off the roads....

I've been here since Monday late afternoon.  Managed a couple of easy swims,  missing the group swim this am.  I was feeling tired, decided to rest.  I'll be there tomorrow though.  Also got in a 10k run and a short ride today.

I'm a little concerned about the weather,  only in that i left some stuff at home that I could probably use at this point,  oh well....

heading of over to register soon.

Hey gang, I'm currently in the car in Mississippi heading towards PCB. I'm planning on meeting whoever is out there Thursday morning for a swim at 7 for one lap of the course and then meeting up at the Boardwalk. Staying at the Summit and I'll try to wear my BT gear as often as possible. Starting to get a bit nervous, but I'm expecting that to subside once the race atmosphere finally hits.

Edit: anyone want to do a short ride Thursday morning sometime after the swim?

I'm in the boardwalk hotel third floor. Weather is awful. Just registered but bagged my swim due to lightning and run looks out too due to downpour. Could be a quiet prep if this weather stays bad!I think we should plan a backup swim time other than 7 am given the forecast then play it by ear. Something like 2-3pm?Going to go to expo and finish unpacking...No rush to get down here in these conditions. Registration was a breeze.

Yep, I bailed on my planned run due to the weather and lack of sleep on the plane last night.  Too much turbulence.  We are at the Laketown Wharf overlooking the gulf!  Laying low tonight, still going to plan on a swim in the morning, but may just meet at 8 and swim after.  Adjust plan if need be, but unless it is storming, you will still be wet.

And as far as race day weather goes, I did Chicago Marathon in 07 the year they attempted to stop it due to excessive heat.  Lake Placid in 08 the year it rained non-stop all day, I also did the Goofy Challenge this past January where it snowed in Orlando during the HM on Saturday and was in the mid-20's for all of the marathon on Sunday.   Nothing weather wise will surprise me Saturday and I have learned to come prepared.  And at the end of the day, we all race in the same conditions and will all get through it.

And yes, you can blame me for the weather.

BT gathering update:

Swim meet up tomorrow at Boardwalk which is the shorter yellow building maybe 3 or 4 stories to the left of the IM merchandise tent on the beach side.

Official meeting is at 8am. Some of us are meeting at 7 am to swim and will stay and visit after. Come swim or come visit best time to meet everyone will be tomorrow Thursday.

If it is raining do we want a back up place to meet? Maybe lobby of the taller Boardwalk hotel/condos that has the pool and it has a big lobby. It is farther to the left if you are facing the beach? I'm open to other suggestions as well.

After the race, some of us are thinking of renting a Pontoon near shell island and swim and watch the dolphins, drink, relax and have a blst. Monday would probably work better but not sure how many will be here Monday. You can do 4 hour or full day rentals at reasonable cost. Interested?

Glen, Eric, Jasha and I swam today and Justin swam after us. It was beautiful I'd guess maybe 72. They only had 6 inches buoys for marking the course. We couldn't see them from the shore due to the waves. After swimming awhile I spotted one and another but no others. They were under the waves as they crested.

We met for lunch along with Jane from England...great time.

I'm very happy to have swam and felt good. Swim is always part that worries me the most so it was a good confidence booster for me. I am the pike

If we want to plan a lunch get together tomorrow we need to pick a place that is big enough and ry. I'd suggest maybe Panera which means driving there as it is about 4-5 miles from race site.

Hey, guys just wanted to stop by and wish everyone the best of luck.

WX, should be good form tomorrow on out. Seas look to be about 2-3 foot slow rollers.

Winds will be out of the North, this will be a "good thing" (as far as the swim goes) the shore will

provide a Lee and not give the wind a chance to kick up any nasty chop.

0700 am temps are expected around 43*F with a high of 65*F.

Hope this helps, and again best of luck and a safe race to all!

I'll swim tomorrow as long as there is no lightening.  Forecast just says rain.

A ride shortly thereafter sounds good if it's not raining.

Drove the bike course with Glen this afternoon.  There's lots of very nice very smooth road out there.   See Jen's ride report if you're interested in details - it's excellent.

I'm also at Laketown,  16th floor, middle of the complex.  Great gulf view.  I think I'll stay with the 7am swim, unless it's storming.  Planning on an afternoon easy rise, perhaps the run course. It's supposed to clear by 3pm.  That gives me time to get what I need for more options.

Agree with above.  i was there a year ago, getting ready for the big day.  I hope the weather gets better for everyone!  Enjoy the IRONMAN experience.  All that training is going to pay off.  While waiting to use the bathroom the morning of the race, they played Journey's "Don;t stop believin'" I had that song running through my head the whole day....It also was the last words my daughter said to me before Daddy went to get ready for the swim.  It kept me motivated the whole race day.

Also, being a NASCAR fan, I remember D, Waltrip saying "I just won the Daytona 500"...so i was telling myself, "I running in the Ironman Florida"

Have an excellent safe race. A whole lot of people will be watching you.
