Run didn't go well Tightened up at 2 miles.

I've gained 12 pounds since my injury and I felt every one of them this morning. That's just plain stupid. I am making a change now and dropping that weight. There is no reason I should let me emotions get to me like that.

********************************

Manatee Group: From my heart: Honestly guys I've been so frustrated that I haven't posted much since my injury. I apologize for that. This group is awesome and I get so much encouragement from y'all that I should be here every day. I am making a vow to check in every day from here on and remain positive. There is no reason for me to get so emotionally involved over a stupid injury.

I've missed so much that I don't know if I can get all caught up so for those of you that have race a big congratulations to you. I WILL be going back and at least reading race reports.

***********************************

OK just talked to my coach. Since rest has obviously not worked and I still have a good base her suggestion is to do daily short runs of 1-2 miles. The thinking is that hopefully this will actually help loosen up my IT Band. She said hopefully this will help loosen up my IT Band and I can get my volume in this way. I know several of you do daily runs so what do you think?

Ughhh hang in there. Have you been aquajogging?  So long as you are cleared to run every day and are able to keep it nice and easy and not be tempted to push yourself, I think consistency is the best tool for battling injury. Additionally, so is hydration and diet. Try and focus on the things you DO have control over.

A teammate of mine said that nutrition is the best legal way to have a competitive advantage. It's so true.

I feel like this is akin to saying "the grass is green" but I've been pleasantly surprised the last couple weeks at how much "easier" my training feels because I've been practicing my nutrition and actually taking in calories consistantly during long runs and rides.

Yes! It's soooo important. And it's something that everyone can stand to work on whether injured or going for a PR.  And don't mistake importance for it having to be complicated.

jobaxas - 2013-03-04 1:38 PM So a sore calf is limiting my output I don't want it to tear as I've done that and it hurts. So still streaking no. 32 yesterday despite having a stomach bug. Swimming pull buoy so calf doesn't cramp try the bike today. On lots of advice I am leaning strongly to doing the swim then stopping. I also have lots of 'you can do it Jo'. But I have to think at what cost how much damage would I cause etc how long to recover. Anyway time will tell. I'm feeling good about it all right now.

And this is what I don't like about streaking.

Take the day off from anything that bothers it.

This advice from someone on day 92 or whatever. Tongue out

It's funny too, because i've read on BT a hundred times that if someone is going over an hour they use this or that. I wasn't taking in anything on long rides (3+ hours) or long runs (1-2 hours). Now I'm taking in nutrition every 25 - 30 minutes and yesterday's ride is a perfect example of how much better it can be with more energy, and consequently a better attitude. I was riding in to 25mph winds for almost 2 hours but stayed positive and enjoyed the ride (and REALLY enjoyed flying back with the wind to my back).

I think the takeaway from streaking is about the overall beneficial trend of consistency and volume. A day here or there doesn't change that overall trend.

well I've had this before and it's torn swimming or in a step class. With a run/walk strategy it seems to loosen a bit. I would say the stiffness and tightness increases when it's not being used. But I'm not dumb I would stop if it was that bad. Last night I was on the couch it's 85 degrees the last thing I felt like was heading out the door. It was a real case of HTFU. And the nausea if felt all day left when I did. The foam roller got into that calf and some ice and my reward a glass of red. I'm only on day 32 of my streak no drama to me if I stop and restart for the third time . If it was day 364 I'd run with a broken leg!!!

A couple pics from my run a couple weeks ago.

Stunning! While I would love to live near the ocean or a bay I do enjoy our 310 days of sunshine each year.

Notice the clouds in all my pictures did you?  LOL

Yeah - it is cloudly / drizzle like rainy here a lot...but that is what gives us all the Trees, Green and Water... All of which I love.  I must admit though, I'm sure glad I took a likin' to runnin' in the rain.  I also took up Scuba Diving as an activity I can do in the winter, since it doesn't matter if it's raining or not when you are under the water.  Not to mention, Giant Pacific Octopus and Wolf Eels are 2 of the most awesome creatures to see - and they are all over the Puget Sound.

Our summers are beautiful though (shhhh, don't tell anyone) and when the sun is shining, I don't think there is a more beautiful place on earth.

Where do you live?  edit - just looked at your avatar and saw where you live...

Cool! not sure I'd want to swim with them tho...

You sure?  With all those extra arms, octopuses are fun to hug.

Is it Octopuses, Octopi, or Octopodes...

Find the answer here... (this gave me a chuckle)

I'd rather have Octocake than Octopi.

An Octo3.14159

I thought it was funny!  And clever!

I wuv you.

Hey there Chad, all ready for the HM this weekend???? Laughing

Ready as I'll ever be, though I admit that I have not trained as hard for this one as I did for the New Years Eve 1/2.  We shall see..

Looking forward to meeting everyone from BT as much as I am the race.

No joke!  We're hiking, and DH starts talking about Rim to Rim to Rim that he wants to do with some friends. Then he veers into talking about maybe us doing Rim to Rim "in March" as a "trial run" for him. I had to remind him we have HM next weekend and THIS IS MARCH already!Surprised

melbo55 - 2013-03-04 10:43 AM Loved your video and pics, Chad.  I like your opening and closing shots with the drops of rain on the blades of grass.  I enjoy nice scenery as well as seeing little pieces of where our manatees reside and play.  And running in the rain is fun!

Thanks Mel... I would like to purchase a GoPro Black edition and make some really cool running videos... Eventually I will get one.

A nifty story from this weekend...

We bought my bike and then had lunch before heading to a local running store to look for some new shoes for me. I've been running less and less in my Nike Frees because they're just about dead, but I love them. So...shop has a sale table outside that I check before I go in.  Lots of NB and Asics, but almost nothing in my size or even Nike at all. One box...ONE...of 8.5. Holy cow!

So DH takes them in to check price because not marked on box at all. They ask where he got them, and he says on table outside. They tell him they weren't supposed to be on sale. Manager checks the box and it's hot from sitting in the sun. He says ok, I guess they're on sale. LOL  $30 off

I'm sure it has been covered somewhere, sometime, but could y'all yinz (a little Pittsburgh-ese in there even though I'm not from that part of PA) humor me and help with some long distance running/nutrition questions?  How, what, when and how carried should I eat/drink in runs over an hour?  Yesterday I did 7 miles which took pokey ol' me 1 hour 20 min.  I ate a Gu around mile 4.5 or 5, I think.  Didn't take water or liquids along because carrying my handheld water bottle thingie that far didn't sound like it would be fun, but if that is what I need to do, I will HFTU.  Do the manatees eat gels, gummies, real food and how do you carry said food/drink?  I'm guessing over an hour drink something other than water?

Ha ha ha the yummiest piglet doctor (MD variety) from BT just treated me to the most amazing breakfast here--we are (or were, I'm still here) looking out on the lake with snow-capped volcanoes in the distance. So intensely beautiful.

melbo55 - 2013-03-04 1:40 PM I'm sure it has been covered somewhere, sometime, but could y'all yinz (a little Pittsburgh-ese in there even though I'm not from that part of PA) humor me and help with some long distance running/nutrition questions?  How, what, when and how carried should I eat/drink in runs over an hour?  Yesterday I did 7 miles which took pokey ol' me 1 hour 20 min.  I ate a Gu around mile 4.5 or 5, I think.  Didn't take water or liquids along because carrying my handheld water bottle thingie that far didn't sound like it would be fun, but if that is what I need to do, I will HFTU.  Do the manatees eat gels, gummies, real food and how do you carry said food/drink?  I'm guessing over an hour drink something other than water?

I hate carrying water too, but don't usually need to because DH carries the Camelback for our long runs/hikes. Same with gel.  If I'm alone...just a little (thinner) regular plastic water bottle that fits my hand better and Gu packet down my sports bra. Embarassed
