spokes - 2007-09-27 3:25 PM .... trying to force us to live packed like rats in high-rises, surrounded by acres of wild land we're not allowed to go into, while our cars are taken away and we're shoved on public transit and we have to eat Soylent Green.

Soylent Green is people!!!

I *hate* lettuce on sandwiches. Its like eating a cold, slimy rag.

thanks I haven't eaten in 3 days but you still managed to make me puke...

Oh, it's a stomach flu? Have you tried ginger? Crystallized is good.

Artemis - 2007-09-27 11:21 AM Hey Tan! I seem to miss out on all the exciting days. Stupid busy lab days.

This is what is STUPID:

http://www.sacbee.com/101/story/401623.html

I'm going to freeze to death this winter. I'm already cold and its like what, the first week of fall?

*snerk*

Says he who just yesterday was talking about having lived through the frigid Iowa winters.

That said, the idea of a ban on using wood-burning fireplaces does strike me as ridiculous.

Do you have asthma?

Ah, I see your point. And no, I don't have asthma.

Just wondering. See, i'm torn on things like that. i don't like the idea of everything being so tightly regulated, but my lungs have a different view of that matter. i don't know where i officially stand on the issue. i love the heat and smell of wood burning stoves, but i do like breathing, too, so... Semi-related: A few months ago, Walgreens switched my rescue inhaler. Apparently my old one was using CFC propellants, and they don't want us wheezy folks destroying the ozone layer...

Yeah, and there are arguably other practices that do more to damage air quality than burning wood to heat one's house (or using CFC-propelled inhalers). Like burning rice fields: apparently that's a bigger problem near Sacramento than even the busiest night of fireplace-using.

Right, but does the fact that there are bigger problems mean that we shouldn't take care of the smaller ones?

Not at all, it just seems that in this case, there are things that could be done to improve the air quality more (e.g. could they not compost whatever it is they're burning in the rice fields, and then use the composted material to fertilize other fields?), without potentially causing problems for people who use wood to heat their homes.

Right, but even if there are ways you could make more improvement, that doesn't negate the value of the smaller changes. They're just smaller. The small changes also tend to be easier to implement.

And I'm on a steady diet of `Emergen-C,' green tea and orange juice since I feel like I'm coming down with a cold.
