For any weather watchers, we can now move from AccuWeather to Weather.com as its 10 days till race day. I've been watching it for a while... not that I can change anything, but more out of curiosity. In the past few days it has gone from Thunderstorms to Sunny and 70's, to 80's and humid, to cloudy with rain. It has actually been pretty funny that the weather is different pretty much every day I've looked So I'm going to plan for dry or humid with a chance of hot sun, thunderstorms, hail, wind, and locusts. |

You mean it is not going to be 103 degrees and 97% humidity????? Well there goes all my training.... After yesterday in Georgia, I am having a difficult time believing that I might be wearing arm warmers in 10 days... ETA: and oh, after getting two yellow jackets down my jersey and one in my helmet yesterday, locusts I will take. Edited by TankBoy 2011-07-14 8:37 AM |

Me too. Any idea how to actually get the ticket? I have the active.com confirmation. Wonder if that will get her in the door. I don't usually do the "banquet" thing but this may very well be a once in a life time gig. I've put other interest and pursuits on hold for IM training and do miss them. And sleeping in on the weekends. I miss that a lot. |

Fred Doucette - 2011-07-12 1:58 PM
I do have a way to make a garmin 305 last a whole ironman though....
Finish under 10:00?
Sweet, I already have that covered! I've got a Garmin 305. I'd like to be able to use it for the whole race. How do you use the speed sensor. How does it extend your battery life? Do you have to take it with you on the bike? Thanks, Ralph Ralph - what you are looking for is the Garmin GSC 10 speed/Cadence sensor. ( http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Speed-Cadence-Bike-Sensor/dp/B000BFNOT... ). The picture that they currently show on Amazon is of a watch for some reason, but the info is otherwise correct. It mounts to your left rear chainstay and basically counts the rotations of your rear wheel via a magnet mounted on one of your spokes and then calculates distance based on the circumference of the wheel I don't have the 305, but if it works liek the other garmin units I have then it will use gps data to calculate the exact circumference of your wheel. Very accurate. A separate magnet can also send you cadence data from your left crank arm. With the GSC 10 synced up to your 305, You then turn off the GPS receiver on the 305, which is the primary battery hog in the unit. You won't get a route plotted of your ride, but the battery will last MUCH longer - a good tradeoff for many. What do you do when you get to the run? Turn on the GPS? |

Veteran 319 | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Hi IMLPeeps! I had an idea that I thought might catch on, who knows? I thought it might be cool to read some of the best training moments everyone has had leading up to the race. Reading stuff like that is inspirational to me and thought it might be for others too. Here are a few of mine: - On a bike ride in West Virginia going up a hill that seemed like it went on for miles and miles with a friend. We stopped at the top, ate, bantered about LP, turned around and coasted for miles! - After I hit the 100 mile mark for the first time on my bike, I went for a run. I had set up my car as an aid/changing station but not really mapped out the run so I ran aimlessly for an hour. I couldn't believe how well I was running for just having ridden 100 miles... I was just in a zone... and this gave me a ton of confidence for Ironman. - Pretty much every run I did on the mall which is my favorite place to run - But on one in January, I took a picture of the reflecting pool frozen solid - At that point, Ironman seemed so far away in my mind - Setting a 10 mile PR at Cherry Blossom 10 miler and thinking to myself that IM training must be doing something! - Swimming in Mirror Lake during training weekend for the first time - It was one of the nicest swims I've ever had. - Taking 2nd in my AG at Harryman HIM, my "tune up" race - Feeling great after a 16 mile run - Not feeling horrible after a 20 mile run - Getting in a very hilly 100 mile solo ride - Cranking out 4k yard swim sets like I'd been doing them all my life - Getting back to training 100% after the injury |

I was expecting to get yelled at or hit with a soda can. Instead the guy yells "DUUUUDE...you were going 47 MPH!!! FORTY FREAKING SEVEN....YEAH Baby!!! YEAH!!!"...haha, that was funny. He was so excited for me. * Looking at my Garmin during some Z4 mile intervals last week and seeing I was holding a 5:45 pace steady. I've never seen a "5:XX" appear in anything pace related...including wind sprints . Thought the satellite was surely wigging out on me, but I did it again and felt great. |

I was up there about month ago and it was perfect, but I am hearing through one of the local Tri Clubs that the water temps were creaping up to the mid 70s... As of last night, I forwarded an email and someone mentioned 75, I find it hard to believe but I figured I would throw it out there and ask. |

So yeah, some of my best training moments are the tune-up races that never happened. Yes, I know - I'm a Race-a-holic. Or as my friends have affectionately dubbed me: A Race . |

The following days lows will be 50, 57, 61, 57 and 52 which will keep Mirror cold enough, especially in the wee morning hours which will be when we are embarking on our 140.6 mile journey. So do not worry, no matter what the swim will be wetsuit legal. Edited by Dream Chaser 2011-07-14 4:37 PM |

Regular 89 Crofton, MD | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I am really not too worried, as I have done a non wetsuit race before, but as you stated, the air temp at night will keep it cool but I was really surprised by the email that was forwarded to me from a local tri club. It stands true that as the it gets closer to the race, the chatter and rumors pick up their head of steam. |

Member 19 Lafayette, Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread No way on that 75... I was there swimming on Wednesday, and it was very low 70's max. That was after a couple of really warm days (for here) and an overnight low in the lower of 60's, which is pretty warm (again, for here). Like DC said, the next week has fairly normal lows to cool things down, so I'm doubting anything above 70 on race day. |

Master 2912 ...at home in The ATL | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread RJohnson1979 - some of the best training moments everyone has had leading up to the race. I have always enjoyed going long and solo on the bike, but am also perfectly willing to scratch a ride if the weather is a little shifty. Signing up for IMLP a year ago gave me the focus to hit all of my target workouts no matter what. Some of the most memorable: - 5 hours on the bike in the driving snow. All of these were great because it felt like the weather was just part of the training - I figure any/all of that could happen during the bike leg of IMLP. Other general things are the fact that I have learned to quit playing "beat the clock" on my workouts; I go exploring on long runs instead of running the same old familiar routes and it has been 11 months since I have had my bike computer even display miles traveled and MPH. It is just time, HR, power, and cadence. I also REALLY enjoyed all the 2~3+ mile OW swims this summer - it is a lot of fun to get in the water and actually go somewhere that you cannot see from the shoreline. This is honestly about the only part I will not miss from IM training - the "trunk transition" - I swear I think I need a bigger car: I am also very pleased to (touching wood) be injury free and far from burned out - I am ready to go! |
