bzgl40 - 2012-12-05 9:49 AM The elk are conspiring against me, keeping me off the trails.  I might start driving to a trail that have less elk hanging out at the trail head.  If they are all off to the side I'll still go by them but this morning was at least 6 right at the start and they were splitting the trail.  A few young ones there as well.  I could just see how that was going to go when they decided they should all be together on the same side...  There is another trail in my hood I can do but it is a rather large hill.  I am staying away from hills for a little bit.

I've gone from a Gold membership, to a Bronze membership, and now just a regular old member.  I don't believe in subsidizing this downward spiral.

What's funny is that you seem to be following the exact model BT has set up.  Come to this site as a beginner looking for knowledge.  But as you learn more, we don't need you as much...and once you learn enough, you may as well be on your way because we only cater to the beginners.  This is after all BEGINNER Triathlete.

Ok...some of that is in pink...but still...

LOL, yup, was a gold member,,,,, then silver,,,

and now?

I'm on the same path.  Just waiting for my term to expire.  I made that choice when they banned Bryan but then wouldn't even have a dialog with him about it.

Ditto, I can't see me renewing mine when it runs out.

I've repeatedly asked to be added to their list of coaches - which is super hard to find - settings -> training log -> find a coach.

Been told "it's in the works", "it'll come with a website redesign"... right.

And, it bugs the crap out of me that some people can post whatever they want - but when a Rev3 teammate asked to post about some new Rev3 race, and was given permission, the post was removed anyway.

x2 on what Marc said - I focus on improving the individual aspects of each discipline.

VDOT on the run, W/kg on the bike, T-Pace (1000 TT) on the swim...if I can do that I know I am making improvement as a whole in triathlon.

I know alot of people get caught up the allure of longer distances.  I was only training 8-10 hrs last year and was doing HIM distances and should have stuck to Olympic distances.  This year that is what I am going to do.

Race the distance that your life/body comfortably allows for keeping in mind your family and other time commitments..makes everything more enjoyable.

Can I hire someone to count for me on 1000yd TT's? That'd be super

I really agree with what you said - and I'm hoping to be in the same training hours chasing Olys by late next year. BUT it's because I have something to chase... a new challenge to hit a time that isn't self-imposed. It will take me places in triathlon if I can hit it. I think that's what I need, personally... a bar set by someone else.

On a separate note, how did you like the Patriot Half? Some of my tri-club are doing it this year and I'm thinking about signing up.

I really enjoyed the Patriot HIM...it is a great course/event. The swim is a single loop rectangle in very coppery water (you could actually taste the metal, and the water was opaque and almost golden in color)...VERY rocky getting out - take your time. The bike is a two loop course through some lovely farmland as well as some lakeside riding. Not too hilly at all. The run is a single loop. I had heard complaints (prior to participating) that the road camber was tough...but living in New England - ALL the roads are cambered so it didn't seem that bad to me.

The hardest part (for me) was finding housing close to the race venue...we ended up staying about 20 minutes away which was fine (my husband brought me to the race start the morning of, dropped me off and went back to the hotel to let the kids swim the morning away). It's at a summer camp site, so there are nice facilities...the biggest bummer to my family is they didn't allow non-racers to swim in the lake after all the racers were done swimming (due to lack of lifeguards).

Once I figure out my races/goals for 2013, if it aligns I'd love to do this one again.

Elk on a run? So - do they spook when you run past them, or just stand there chewing their cud?

Have a great one all - I've got to knuckle down and create a project plan for software upgrades for my client and stop procrastinating by trolling forums.

Ha, it depends on how far away they are.  For the most part they just stand there.  The ones that spook tend to be the ones I don't see until the spook, which of course spooks me.  This area is known for their elk, so much so that we had to take a longer route to the Grand Canyon to avoid a particularly troublesome road.

I find that setting goals on the whole of triathlon is difficult. It's hard to put a "time" goal because every course is so different.

Instead, I am looking at the three sports individually
On the run, I know my VDOT and a goal to improve a VDOT by 1 or 2 points is very reasonable. 10km runs are probably the best to track progress, but 5km are fine for tracking progress.
On the bike, I know my FTP and I know my weight, so to improve my W/KG by .1, .2, .3 is a reasonable goal
On the swim, to knock 2s/100m probably is reasonable.
Related to my W/kg, to hit a weight target is part of my plan.
To achieve a total workout volume say 10% more than last year is a reasonable target

On a weekly/montly basis, my average pace on the run, chasing points on my CP curve for the bike, a beat the clock on the swim, my average weight are ways of chasing short terms goals that add up to long term goals.

If I do all of those, then hopefully the sum of it, on a good race day will give me a result I am happy with. To chase X hours on a HIM makes no sense.

If I get injured in one sport, just keep tracking progress in the 2 others.

Does this make any sense ? I can expand if so.

That's some good stuff right there!

Ugly stuff Chris, it's amazing how people will justify something like that by simply saying they are doing what the guy in front of them is doing.

Nice job on the test.

I've got a run later this afternoon.  I'd normally bike this morning but the calves are still super tight.  In general my legs are super tight so some extra foam rolling is on the schedule as well

You wrote this very well, Chris. You had  fantastic race, and while I know that information was secondary to the purpose of your writing, I think that fact puts the cheating in a finer light. Maybe the cheating did or did not keep you out of a podium spot, but it kept someone out of  podium spot, and that should be everyone's concern.

I admire you for calling people out on it at the race and articulating it so clearly after.

CardioAbs last night kicked my hiney. Then last night, getting up so the cat could get a drink of water, I cracked my second toe (the one next to the big toe) on a floor board. It hurt like crazy last night, and this morning, the toe nail is black.

Nevertheless, I'm sure I can run on it, so I'm planning on a 4ish mile run today and 30 minutes on the trainer. Final exams start today, so I don't know if the pool is open, but if it is, I'll head there for 30-40 minutes during lunch.

We have snow in the forecast for this weekend!!! Surprised

I love you guys.

It did warm up in the afternoon, but crisp air and wind, so I was bumming around all day in longsleeves, long pants, hat. People were looking at me funny.  I have not turned the AC on in my hotel room and am hanging about in fuzzy robe and socks. Brrrrr.

I set my alarm for Masters this morning, but just couldn't do it. Still a bit wheezy from the crud. I think I may try an easy trainer ride in a bit. That seems like the easiest to bail if the body decides not to cooperate.

Jennifer, I pulled the trigger yesterday and signed up for the Patriot Half. Thanks for the info.

Interesting Elaine, I just went to the list. Only 4 available coaches. IMO this would be the time of year to fill that out a bit. It won't be long before people are starting on their 2013 training plans. And you're right degree of difficulty finding it.

I may have asked this before, but my legs are telling me to ask again.

For those of you who lift weights, where do you fit that into your schedule so you're not impacting the other workouts.  i.e. I'd rather not going to do upper body exercises the day before I swim, since I know that will likely impact my swim a bit.  Same is true for working out the legs.

But I just can't seem to figure out how I can schedule everything....
