Anyone using any supplements to fight off getting sick?  Sam and I are sick yet again, I swear I feel like i've been sick since before christmas...

Also, anyone have any exciting plans for the superbowl?  We're pigging out on some brisket, and other snacks.

Not me.  I catch colds easily...especially when I go to school with a lot of sick people and we all use computers.    I've tried supplements, but I feel like it doesn't help much.   When I DO get sick, I take Emergen-C twice a day. It seems to help the duration of the "bad" part of the cold, but without fail, my colds lasts me a good week.  Only one or two days of that is severe, the rest are just sniffles, the start of the cold, and the end, etc.

Now that I know what a flu feels like, I rather have the flu than colds.  I've heard many people swear by Zicam.    I've tried that, no dice.
I've also tried Airborne (even though I haven't been on the plane), and that seem to "help" a little bit.

However, I just allow it go away naturally. We get colds. I get over it. (oh yeah, and it's a perfect excuse to miss a workout...imo

ZICAM! and lots of it.  Up until Paul passing me his cold, I hadn't been sick in the three years.  I attribute it to a good diet (which you have), sleep (not sure how much you get) and BCAAs three times a day.   I also take Metagenics Multis every day.  Oh and I am a Purel freak.

What are BCAAs?

My "I feel a cold coming" regimen is to start tanking up on Vitamin C (either tablets, Emergen-C, or both), Vitamin D, Umcka (OTC holistic, I do the alcohol-free drops under the tongue), and I triple up on Green Vibrance (green stuff I put in my smoothies daily). I used to do Zicam with good results, not sure why I haven't anymore -- maybe when I started using Umcka I stopped Zicam. Sometimes this all works, sometimes it doesn't. Sadly, with kids, it can be hard to stay cold-free for years like Suzy does. Hope you both feel better soon!!!

Yes, Suzy!  What are BCAA's???  That's funny, as I read your response, I thought, AND she doesn't have kids bringing their germs and their friends germs home and into the car and wiping them all over everything faster than you can clean up after them!!!

Neither do I and that's probably why I rarely get sick.  When I do feel a cold coming on, I tend to drink two emergen-C packets, and make it a point to drink tons of water and go to bed early.  I also wash my hands at least 30 times a day during the weekdays, and that is not an exaggeration!  My hands by the end of this time of year when it's usually cold are all cracked and dry.  I have to wear those squishy moistening gloves to bed or sometimes the crack in my thumb gets so big, I am in tears!

Oops, I diverge.  It's a rest day, and I am just hanging out.  Took doggie to the beach already and am trying not to make too much noise....it's going to be another sunny 72F day out here in the land of high property taxes!!!

Enjoy the superbowl peeps!!!  Go Green Bay.  no explanation point because of what you have done to my Niners in the past.  But I will still root for GB, NFC and Pac 10, go Aaron!  Go Black Eyed Peas and Fergie!  They get explanation points.

Dang Tony...tough luck.  Hope you guys can knock it up and get well quickly.

I have a fun evening planned at our local "watering hole".  The party is $100 a couple that includes food and open bar, and also enters you a spot on the football board.  Everytime someone scores, the winning square gets their $100 back.  The final winner wins the balance of the 10k pot and pays off the bar tab and keeps the rest.

Should be a fun evening, and I am not traveling to work tomorrow, and PROBABLY will call tomorrow a "rest" day.

fowlmood - 2011-02-05 7:48 PM Finally had 2 good workouts and a great day watching my son in his last Wrestling match and pinned all 4 of his guys and took 1st place today.

Was up at 4:30am drove an hour to La Junta Swam 4000m with the Main set of 1500m Time Trial. Drove home watched the matches after that went on my longest run ever 13.15 the 1st 6.5 miles was pretty much up hill and against the wind, but it was the long down hill that beat my legs. Did finish strong completed it in 1:45:15 really pleased with the pace. When I got home jumped in to an ice bath for 15mins what fun.

that got my attention!  I can't imagine jumping - I ease in slowly, muttering the whole way!

That's better than me!  I refuse to ice bath...  Went through 4 years of playing college soccer, meaning 4 grueling preseason Hell weeks, and I never used one.  I'm a big sissy when it comes to cold water.  Though I did have a freezer full of ice cups!

So you guys impress me with the fact that you'll even attempt it!

I totally agree with the whole kid thing.  They seem to be little petrie dishes.

BCAAs=branch chain amino acids plus Glutamine.  I take them when I first get up, before lunch and before dinner.

Changing the subject, I am very happy with the way my training is going. This past week I have had good workouts in all three disciplines. Each one left me with an endorphine rush, even today's bike, which is rare. I felt a good tiredness afterwards with no over -training pain. I also did my farthest run of 5.64 miles in 45 minutes. No post-run pain!

SO I will bring my run along slowly and keep moving the swim and bike along. Just thought I would share.

(The achillies bursitis ruined last years results, so here is to an improved 2011!)

Tony, I take a multivitamin with iron, Calcium, fishoil and antioxidants.  Teaching elementary kids exposes a person to a LOT of germs, just part of the job.

A question for my lady friends!  Do you race in a tri suit that has a shelf bra in it or do you wear a separate top underneath?

Shelf bra all the way. I prefer to wear shorts and a top (vs. a one-piece suit) -- much easier for bathroom access (although yeah, you don't always need to drop trou to pee, ha ha!). Anyway, I like having the bra integrated into the top -- it's comfy and support isn't something I really need.

Me too Kyla, 2 piece with a shelf.  Most of the girls in my tri club wear our club singlet (no support underneath) and wear another bra-top under that.  I prefer a top with support.

Stupid Packers couldn't hold them for that last TD, I had the halftime score dead on until then.

I did though get that Christina Agwhatever would go sub 2:00 on the anthem, but her Brave would be over :06, (I think it ended up being :11 sec)

LOL, we get a whole list of things to bet on, person with the most right items win.

We also had an over/under on Jerry Jones sightings at 3, haven't seen him at all yet and I went with the over.

Linda--either works for me, but I found for longer distance like IM wearing a bra and a cycling jersey worked best.  Allowed me to have a large pocket in the back for extra fuel and tubes.  For running races, I wear a sports bra and nothing else....
