You totally should do this Kel!  And I'm with you..the running through fire doesn't sound so bad ...it's the underwater tunnels and plank that would get me!

KelliD - 2010-03-08 3:06 PM Congrats on a great race Jessica!!

Between your tri and the OWS peeps, I'm having some major envy at the moment.  I'm itching for tri time!!!

I'm contemplating this insane race...http://toughmudder.com/events/bear-creek/.  I blame peer pressure.  It does look like a fun day....well, maybe with the exception of freezing cold water and squeezing through confined spaces.

my friend is trying to convince me to do this race..  You do realize that you have to run through fire.

Oddly enough, the fire actually doesn't bother me.  Going through underwater tunnels terrifies me and jumping off the 15 ft plank doesn't exactly thrill me....let's not foget how many times you're likely to end up in the water and how cold it'll be.  I hate being cold!!

Overweight collegue says, "I started smoking this weekend to help me lose weight."

Yup, swear to God.

I think I saw his brother today, heavier guy on a bike in full road gear. He pulled out of his driveway peddled about 2 blocks up the street, then pulled over and had a smoke. It's possible he told his family that he was going for a ride when it really was a smoke. He may be losing weight but it isn't because of the bike riding.

Hey all, I'm looking for advice here. I have never had any formal swim instruction (save one brief meeting with a swim coach in the fall) and am self taught so I'm struggling with all of the technique lingo. Things like Catch, S Stroke, pull are foreign to me. I'm very comfortable in the water and have read TI and watched endless freestyle youtube videos. Right now I can probably swim around a 2:00 100m, maybe faster if I pushed.

I was told that my stroke looked good but my hips tend to sink. I noticed today that my arms were crossing over the middle so that needs attention. I'm not sure where my hand should enter the water and the most efficient way to pull through the water. There are so many things to work on with technique I don't know where to begin.

I'd planned on hiring  a swim coach but I'm not working right now so I can't do that. Without seeing my stroke, are there any suggestions on drills and what techniques will be more advantageous to work on?

I may have seen another relative. This guy was WALKING his bike up a hill with a cigarette dangling from his mouth. I rubbernecked so much I nearly drove off the road....

No advice from me - just that I find myself in the same boat as you.  Swimming is always a lot of effort for me, it certainly doesn't come easy, and when I hear people talk about a "relaxing swim" I have no way to relate.  It's the one workout where I feel my muscles the most.

I don't know if you have anything available like this where you are.  Tri On the Run has an endless pool that they use with swim instructors to video-record your stroke.  You get tips from an instructor / swim coach and a video to help you see exactly what you are doing.  It's not free but I think this type of instruction can go a long ways to improving.  I am sure Eric will chime in since he is the one that recommended and coached my one session so far.  I hope to keep putting his suggestions to work in the pool and come back in a month or so to see if I look any better (couldn't be much worst).  Maybe something like this would help you perfect your stroke?

I agree.. you should definitely do it! Although I think you're both crazy thinking the fire is no big deal... of course this is coming from the girl who burned herself trying to iron clothes so I don't think running through fire would end well for me.

Wow ... what a wet and wild race weekend. It proved that it's not always beautiful in Southern California. The race was okay, played it safe and finished in one piece.

Congratulations!

KelliD - 2010-03-08 2:57 PM Question.... I've had issues with a tight ITB/knee soreness in my left leg off & on for the past 5+ years.  As long as I stretch and use the foam roller I'm able to keep in under control and it doesn't really bother me.  Since last September I've had to pay more attention to it, and my left hammy's, inner thigh and calf get extremely tight and just feel "off".  I've been getting a bit of knee pain, which I assume is a result of tight muscles/muscle inbalance.  My right leg feel fanastic...no problems whatsoever.  My left leg is slightly shorter than my right, and I'm wondering if this is the culprit.  I think it's time for me to go to a doctor and get this looked at before I get injured....but what kind of doctor would I go to for this?

It has only been a week or so for me but I am seeing an ART specialist.  He is a chiropractor who is certified in ART (Active Release Therapy).  The idea is that when you get injured your body swells which is natural and normal.  However, when the swelling goes down you are left with scar tissue that will continue to flare up and while rest and the foam roller will keep it down to a dull roar it doesn't fix the issue.
I found my provider through a link posted her on BT in the injuries board.  It took you to a webpage where you could find a provider in your area.  It was also recommended to choose a provider who is IM certified.  There were two in my area, I checked out their websites and made a call.  It is covered by my insruace so I only pay a co-pay.  Yesterday I told my provider I'd be back in April before my race because even with just a co-pay it adds up (ours is $25).  He said after the initial $100 he waives co-pays and our insurance covers 60 visits per year!

I am very picky about my care providers as anybody who knows me will tell you and this guy passes all my tests.  He is about prevention rather than just treatment and he runs marathons and ultra marathons so he understands me as an 'athlete'.

Oh, I also spoke with a spors physiologist (a friends husband) and it was his recommendation to find an ART provider that was a chiropractor rather than a physical therpist because they have more knowledge about prevention and maintenance in his opinion.

I'll see if I can find the link to find providers in your area.

Thanks Keri!!!!  I actually was seriously considering ART when this first starting bothering me last year, and I just never followed through with it mostly bc I didn't want to deal with the "hassle" of finding out how much my insurance would/wouldn't cover.  Stupid, I know.  I'm going to the doctor on Friday and also going to look into this.

The office handled everything for me, I didn't have to do anything.  I never even called my insurance company.  We have a PPO though.

What kind of doctor are you seeing Friday?

Just wanted to thank you guys for the support dealing with the PM nightmare yesterday (see BT blog for more info).

I love the BT network. Remember that most of the information posted here is public and the occasional racer trying to justify what happened in his/her race may come here seeking out information and justice if things don't go their way.

Now ... enough of that ... time for a bike ride!!

Thanks again guys!

I will x2 the ART. With out that I would not have gotten through all of last year with my calf issues, both sides.

Also my ins I get 20 visits at the copay amount per year for chiro. Since the place I go is a chiro that does ART I was golden.

OK I was out of pocket all day yesterday and I come back and no ladies locker room speak of a being hit on or other nonsence. I must say I was a little disappointed. 2 good things this weekend well 3.

1. Got a wetsuit. Zenith off ebay, NWT and a crazy steal at the price
2. The lower legs area felt great running on Saturday. odd how nice it is to run and not constantly think about how your foot lands as not to make them hurt more.

3. The most important of all. I have a rematch!!!!  For the newest of the group last year on my 2nd ever race I challenged a freind. I lost by 40 seconds as I got passed with 1/4 mi left. I had to wear a shirt of shame. Well come June 6th we have agreed to a rematch.
