tripadigin - 2011-07-15 2:44 PM Had my last set of x-rays today and the screws are still in place. Doc has given me the green light so .....I AM RACING LAKE PLACID NEXT WEEKEND. So thankful I continued training even during the recovery (my logs show over 25 hrs. of trainer rides over the past two and a half weeks....at least I will be mentally tough!)

It will be four weeks ago tomorrow that I had my crash...ER nurses said to forget about the race..its not going to happen this year. It would take a miracle. Well fellow IM-LP peeps, my bib number is 1980.  A race in Lake Placid with that number?...are you kidding me? Do you believe in miracles?? Yes!!

Going up on Tuesday and will likely swim a lap Wednesday morning and Friday morning, say around 8am. Let me know if anyone wants to get together for a swim or a short ride.

Jeff

I'm leaving Va Beach for LP on Tue also, maybe see you Wed for swim, do you have cast on your hands?

I will have a small splint on left hand, right hand will be taped.

I do have a way to make a garmin 305 last a whole ironman though....

Finish under 10:00?

Use a speed sensor so the Garmin is not using power to track satellites?
yes, that's it.

Sweet, I already have that covered!

I've got a Garmin 305. I'd like to be able to use it for the whole race. How do you use the speed sensor. How does it extend your battery life? Do you have to take it with you on the bike?

Thanks,

Ralph

Ralph - what you are looking for is the Garmin GSC 10 speed/Cadence sensor. ( http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Speed-Cadence-Bike-Sensor/dp/B000BFNOT... ). The picture that they currently show on Amazon is of a watch for some reason, but the info is otherwise correct. It mounts to your left rear chainstay and basically counts the rotations of your rear wheel via a magnet mounted on one of your spokes and then calculates distance based on the circumference of the wheel I don't have the 305, but if it works liek the other garmin units I have then it will use gps data to calculate the exact circumference of your wheel. Very accurate. A separate magnet can also send you cadence data from your left crank arm. With the GSC 10 synced up to your 305, You then turn off the GPS receiver on the 305, which is the primary battery hog in the unit. You won't get a route plotted of your ride, but the battery will last MUCH longer - a good tradeoff for many.

What do you do when you get to the run? Turn on the GPS?

Bumping to the top. Anyone?

That's what I'm going to do

That is what I did. I am using a Garmin Edge 500 on the bike and my Garmin Forerunner 305 for the run. I'll have the 305 on my wrist (with the satellite off) for the bike and then turn the satellite on for the run.

I do have a 205, but want HR for both bike and run. I'll sacrifice the GPS on the bike if it will get me enough battery to get through the run with HR and pace info. Of course, I've only raced 2x with HR and one was sprint. Even on the HIM I didn't pay that much attention to it. I do think I'm gonna want to have it available though.... but the GPS map info is always fun to have after the ride. I figure info during the race is more important than info after the race so my plan is to go with the 305 throughout but turn off GPS for the bike since I have the speed/cadence sensor and turn it back on for the run.

mogulbumm -

Anybody else bringing young kids there?  My girls are 5 and 8 and looking for fun things to do with them up there.  I'm sure they will thoroughly enjoy driving the bike loop and watching daddy ride some of the hills to get a feel for them (not) but interested in what we can do that is fun for them and allows me to rest for the race at the same time.  Hopefully weather will support hanging out by the lake.

I have a 5 & 8 year old.  Last year we took the kids to the North Pole.  http://www.northpoleny.com/    It's not cheap, but not terribly expensive either.  We all actually had a lot of fun, and it's only 20 minutes from LP.  It's really close.  It's a little hilly in there but there isn't much walking.  Again, we all had fun... well except for Santa in this picture we took there:

My avatar pic was a Sprint tri where I red-lined it the entire time, and it was in the middle of a huge storm with gale force winds and pouring rain.  Good times

thanks, one more purchase before LP!

Ralph

P.S. Don't tell my wife!

This should be a universal agreement between all of us.  I've been spending cash like a madman the last few weeks!  I NEED these sunglasses and that chamois, and this water-bottle, and that race-belt, and that headband, and this race-wheel rental, which requires a new chain and new cassette, and  6 pounds of Infinit, and my shorts need to match, and these special socks, and i must compress this, and i need to compress that, and that, and that, and i must have coconut water, and a case of vanilla Ensure for the morning breaky, and new pedals because the Keene descent is crazy, and black bar tape because my helmet is red, and what if rains, and what if it snows, oh lord, i need a new microwave to warm my ferret...oh man...please, please wife, don't loooooook at the bank statement!

New goggles and EXTRA LARGE Body Glide.

Speaking of body glide, I have several of them floating around the house.  If you aren't into sports I doubt you would know what it is.  This weekend we had a babysitter keep the kids Sat. after my ride while my wife and I went to town.  I realized I had a tube in the kitchen and living room, if the babysitter saw them (which she had too) she probablly thinks me and my wife are sex freaks now.hehe

Very funny. My girlfriend saw a new tube of body glide at her barley English speaking parents house and asked her Dad what it was for. He said it was a new kind of deodorant! Nice upsell by the guy in the pharmacy selling a Russian immigrant a $13. tube of "deodorant"! That guy should be selling $10,000 tri bikes to newbies.

Apprehensive - adj : viewing the future with anxiety or alarm.

Yeah, that sums it up nicely for me.  I explained it to my wife as such:  Ironman is my wedding -- You have to sign up for it a year in advance.  It cost a lot of money.  There is a ton of planning and preparation that goes into it.  Plenty of stress.  And all these things hinge on a single day with no guarantees, and circumstances you are completely powerless over.  You don't know what the weather will be, you don't know how you will feel, you just don't know a lot of things.  Sprint tri's, olympic distance, even 70.3's are dime a dozen races, distances that many can be completed on minimal training.  You can fake all the lesser races. But not the Ironman.

So yeah, I think it's okay we feel apprehensive.

Hey everyone - I almost forgot this - YIKES!
I still have an extra room at the Crowne Plaza that I can transfer to someone or cancel by tomorrow morning - $349.00 per night (Check in Thursday, check out Tuesday, but can extend) - I will lose one night if I cancel, so I am perfectly happy to give you that one night free. Let me know if you or anyone else you might know is interested. I going to release it back to the hotel tomorrow am.

very apprehensive - especially cause i pulled up after 1/2 mile run y/day with my knee in all sorts of pain (ligaments).   PT said its out of alignment.

what would people do - 1) nothing all week and go for it on the day or 2) light run sessions?

hope everyone has a great final week....   it`ll be nearly over in 7 days.

Do Not Run on it at all. R.I.C.E. Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation. Take some nasaids. Ask your PT if he does kinesio taping. See if he can show you how to tape it so as to help the knee track when running. Practice taping ig yourself. Then put some tape in your transition bags and tape it on Race Day - after the swim. You can speedwalk a marathon in around 5 hours.
