Fred D - 2012-07-15 7:55 AM Anxiously awaiting James race results.

What about me?

Ok...race report coming, but in summary, I stayed with the front pack, but never took a pull.  Just responded to all the surges.  With 2 laps to go, a guy attacked hard, but he wasn't in my AG division (18-34, cat 4/5) so I didn't chase and nobody else did either...he was long gone as he was far stronger than everyone else.

On the last lap, I moved into position in the top 3 spots and had to gut myself to hang on during the climbs.

As we made the run into the finish, which is a short .25 mile hill at about 5%, I was 2nd wheel and jumped at the base of the hill.  I pulled away but another 18-34 jumped on me, then actually pulled even with me with about 50 meters to go.  Luckily though I had a little extra and got him at the line by about half a wheel.

So 1st in Senior Men Cat 4/5, and 2nd overall among all 4/5's.  I averaged almost 24 mph climbing that hill, and was pegged at 194 bpm.

that's awesome.  Have you raced before?

I was writing this as Stacy was driving us back home to PA. We are back now.  I didn't want to send this from phone the formatting would have been one huge paragraph.

The following times are close.  I can't remember the actual.  This is a short summery nothing sugar coated and no excuses.

Swim:   No wetsuit.  Rough water and I went way off course so I had to back tracked to the turn buoy. Made some time back in the channel, :34 something.

Bike: I took the first :15-:20 minutes ez then got busy.  Mile 20-30 God sent wrath from the heavens.  Full out thunderstorms with heavy stinging rain.  Fun ride but I would change the course bit to cut out some of the unessential weird turns out. Time 2:40'ish.  I had an average of 21 mph on my Garmin.

Run:  This run course is challenging.  So after I emptied the water out of my shoes.  I put on dry socks, dumb so why did I bother.    After the first hill my feet hurt so bad from being wet I wanted to walk.  My feet were completely saturated since mile 20 on the bike.  I did run the whole course though.  The run is where I lost any chance at placing.  I counted 7 maybe 8 of my AG'ers pass me.

My finish time was 5:19 top my AG was 4:54.  I bow to anyone that goes sub 5 hrs on this course. The winner went 4:20 something.

Thoughts:  I was happy to cross the line.  Disappointed yes and it is ok to feel this way.  It certainly won't deter anything in the future.  I thank my God so much for returning my health in such a short amount of time to do a distance such as this.  I thank my friends and family for all the support.

Great job Jason!

You keep that up and they will move you to a CAT III.

. Awesome job James. If you are like me you tend to beat yourself up after races wondering if you could have done better. I would say considering the conditions and your health last year that this is the return of something great. Congrats!

x2.  Incredible job considering where you came from...especially on such a tough corse.

This is my second season in road racing.  Last year I was just trying to get used to racing in a pack and learning what it's like to respond to attacks and manage my effort...because it's totally different than the bike portion of a tri.  I did okay last year in a couple events.

I recognized the name of the guy who won our oveall race and broke away.  He's a stud triathlete...and has gone sub 4:40 at the Honu 70.3 the past 3 years...with bike splits in the 2:27 range.  I'm not in his league...yet.

Well, did the sprint tri yesterday, had a decent race.  33/550, did the swim in 13 (1/2 mile), did the bike in 28:45 (12.3 miles) and ran the 5k in about 24 mins.  The swim was average for me, the bike was best in the field and course record, the run was a bit slow.  All things considered, i had no leg pain and it feels ok today, i got bad blisters from my shoes on the back of my heels.

We then had the BeerBQ, which was awesome, had some great friends come and we ate and drank all day!!!

Hope everyone had a nice weekend!!!

Sounds like a perfect day.  Way to kill it on the bike.  Weird on the blisters though.  Sockless?

I mention all of these things because I am a self absorbed long course triathlete and since this is core to my being I need you all to know what I'm doing in great detail.  I will post my eating and bathroom habits as the day progresses.

Ha, I lived that he got nailed for that post by a few folks.

Sounds like an awesome job in rough conditions.  Welcome back to HIM racing and great health!

So my knee problems have gone from annoying to troubling.  It seemed like it got better but then I went on vacation and it really bothered me during hiking.  Bothering me still here at home.  It is not a constant pain, no swelling, no general discomfort.  But I move a particular way and it is a sharp pain.  I am able to locate it a bit better now and it is on the inside of leg towards the bottom/middle side of the knee on the side.  Last night I moved it a particular way and although it shouldn't have bothered me after when I bent my leg all the way bent it was very painful.  When I straightened it back out no pain, so only sore when bent.  Walking was fine.  Today I can bend with no pain.

I do not need referrals to see a specialist and I do not have a primary care dr here in Payson.  I would normally head off to ART but that would mean driving to Phoenix or to Tucson to my usual guy.  If you were in my shoes and kind of have concerns about dr's here would you still first go get a primary care and start there or would you just see if you could get into PT?

yeah Tom, the way it has been acting I've been leaning towards a potential MCL issue as well.  Maybe I'll attack it both from a primary care and PT to see who can get me the MRI first

Wow, sounds like a great weekend of racing.

James - congrats getting back to the distance considering the health issues last year.  This is only the first...

Jason - great job on the road race.  I can't ride like that and I know it.  I don't have the explosive surges, and don't do well on short steep hills.

Rudy - nice job as ususal on the impressive bike split, and overall result.

*popping my head in to say congrats to James, Jason and Ruuuudeeee *

and ask a question of The Greats (yes, that would be you, whoever is reading this ...)

I have no idea what "engage your core" means with respect to S/B/R (and those are three hugely different activities anyway)

I'm not an idiot. I've co-written and edited two Pilates training manuals and one yoga training manual (as in, the manual for instructors, not students). But I can't find any information indicating that engaging the core, whatever that means, or even strengthening the core, has any direct effect on performance in normal healthy individuals.

Is "engage your core" advice useful for anything tri? Am I missing something really obvious?

Thanks, pardon the intrusion, carry on.
