Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Ya'll. Back from camp. Must say, I absolutely loved it. It wasn't a high intensity, high training load type of boot camp, but more a technical camp. With such a varied group of athletes with differing abilities, and a group so small (12 people), it would have been difficult to really get the training loads correct. There was a lady on camp that was European AG 70-75 Champion. Blew me away how she was able to do all she did. I also got chicked by a 60+ year old on the 14.5 km trail run we did, but then, so did everyone else in the group :-) My reason for going on the camp was to get some swim coaching focus but I also learned so much more in the other disciplines (Bike/Run/Transition). As a report on how the camp went, I'll split it down into the 4 disciplines, and how I managed(failed). Swim. I have never seen myself swim before and this was a real eye opener. After day one I basically had to relearn how to swim. I won't mention what was wrong, I'll let you critique the video yourself. It's not pretty. It is amazing how what you think you are swimming like and what you are swimming like can be so far apart. On the first day we were filmed swimming 100 meters. Later, we watched the videos back and broke down/highlighted the biggest problems that needed addressing first. We were then split into groups of 3-4 depending on what work was needed. We then had 40 minutes each day of instructional technique and drills correcting those problems. Edit: Grrrr, keeps on timing out 10% into video upload. Wil post a FB linky to it soon. Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bike. This was more concentrating on handling skills. To keep the rides safe, we rode in groups depending on ability and in 2 up formation. This was the first time I had been in a group ride where we are shoulder to shoulder, wheel to wheel. It's quite the experience. I loved it and am amazed at how much easier it is to ride at speed whilst drafting. I now see the amount of difference air drag has on you. When it's your turn at the front you can really feel it. We also learned about keeping the line, not braking, always cycling and all the other stuff that goes on with group cycling. I loved it. The terrain in the Dordogne is rolling countryside with cobble stoned towns/villages every few kilometers. Most of the hills we rode were around the 4-6% gradient and went on for 2-3 kms. Perfect for this type of riding. weather was good. A bit cooler at the start of the week but climbing to 90 toward the end of the week. The rides weren't huge distances, and weren't particularly fast. Although, I certainly felt the burn a few times on them. There were always options to cut short, of which a few riders did, but most stuck together until the coffee and cake stop at around 50-60 km mark. It was then up to you if you wanted to group back in or go solo. I solo'd back in. The rides consisted of Ride 1 - 60 km group getting used to group riding. 9 km solo home Ride 2 - 67 km group, 35 km solo. Ride 3 - 37 km hill session. 2.8 km 4% avg hill where we went up the hill on the first attempt in the lowest gear spinning as fast as you could (100+ cadence), 2nd time up a gear, spinning highest cadence you could manage again, keep doing this until you fail. A funny video that was pointed out to me when talking at the cafe is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13BENuYp19w Made me chuckle, I didn't realise how rough it could get in a peleton. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Run Not much instruction was given on this. I attached some very short bricks (1 mile) to the rides but that was just to get the legs used to running after the bike and to try to slow down when first setting off. If I wasn't so worried about my previous knee/shin problems I would have made them a bit longer. The other planned runs included a 12.5 km road run, at your own pace, to the town one day. The other was a 14.5 km trail run with a 2 km climb @ 5%. Again, you chose what pace to attempt. The third session was a track/technique session. The objectives taught on this were high knees, driving down, standing tall, looking forward. I injured myself on this session. My stride is completely wrong. Up until this point I had been ok without any REAL pain or discomfort. After only a few hundred meter intervals trying to do these drills I had stabbing pains across the front of my shins. Not in the area I normally get shin splints in either. There is a slow-mo video around of me attempting another 100 m in my socks after a little rest that I'm trying to get my hands on that shows me over-striding quite(edit:VERY) badly when doing this drill. It's as if I'm pointing my toes out front on each step and not landing underneath myself. Previously, before the lesson began, I was picked up as being a "legs out back" runner. i.e No high knees, shuffle along, heel strike. Also said I had a little bit of rotation around the middle. It looks like I really need to work on this. I'm taking a week off running to make sure there is no major damage that I'm going to aggravate before I start back up again. Can anyone suggest any drills that I can do to try to correct this? Is there anyway I can break the run down into parts so that I can practice the form to get muscle memory? I'm already running at a cadence of 180. More high knee drills? The others then went on to carryout pace judgement skills. I didn't ![]() Oh, another thing I noticed on the video. I am carrying WAY too much timber at the moment. Horrible seeing your wobbly bits in slow motion ![]() |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Transition. We covered quite a lot to do with the transition. Mainly the bike mount/dismount. I seemed to pick up the flying mount very quickly after cracking my shin on the quick release the 1 st attempt ![]() It's not as hard as I thought it would be, and no pain on the baby machine at all, which surprised me. We also covered the dismount to, which also went well, along with how to attach your shoes to the bike at different points depending on whether you're doing a postman's start or a flying mount. We then went on to do a mini Sprint Tri of 200 m swim, 9 km bike 1 km run to test those things out. I did ok and managed to do a flying mount, although I did have to put my shoes on 1st because I couldn't get to grips with getting my feet in the shes whilst cycling (had road shoes, not tri. Need new shoes, but probably not important for Ironman Wales). Location and Team The location is stunning. The Dordogne area of France is absolutely stunning. Picture perfect, with chateaus nestled on tree covered hills, limestone villages with quirky alleys and lazy rivers following sweeping meadows. If you have a vision of what France is, then this place will be it. I've visited France before, but to different areas, and both times never lived up to my expectations. This place did. The training camp itself is a beautifully restored stable, converted into apartments that house either 4 or 6 people. For those that haven't seen my instagram/facebook posts, I'll post a few pics I took whilst out there. The camp instructors are very friendly, although, they do have their opinions on what is the right way to train and what is tosh, which could rub some people up the wrong way. I never had any problems with them. All in all, I loved it and can't wait to go again. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok, question for y'all. Just got an email from Ironman offering a pre-sale package for Ironman Texas 70.3 & Ironman Texas in 2016 for $925. I don't think either of these events sell out quickly, so no real benefit there. And I think a regular Ironman is around $675 and I paid $275 for this HIM this year, so it looks like it will only save me $25 to do this deal? What am I missing here? |

AND we made it to Thursday. The dog is going to have to wait until next week for the AC. Repair guy said it may not be worth fixing and quoted us a new system. The new quote was what I consider UNREASONABLE so we're getting another opinion. Meanwhile the heat has broken and it's BEAUTIFUL here in southern New England - and should be the same for my first race of the season - a local duathlon. You still have your money +1 On Monday, I ran in an extra pair of running shoes. Nothing crazy, an easy 5 miles. The day afterward, it feels like something bad happened in my right foot. It feels like something isn't right in like, the fourth metatarsal, and also something tissue-ish in the ankle. I haven't felt this type of thing before, and almost wondering if it's a fracture. No idea. I've been trying to stave off the onset of pf in my right foot, so maybe compensating for that + different shoes equaled something bad. Looks like I'm going to swim/bike for a week or so until it resolves itself. Walking is still uncomfortable. |

I like them, but the first time out was interesting. It took a few moments to figure out what I was feeling underfoot. The heel is different, as you can probably tell, and as a heelstriker, it was an adjustment. At this point (50 or so miles) I really like them, although they have a very stiff piece in the mid foot area that strikes me as weird. I feel like it kind of offsets some of the cushion. Realistically though, cushion is why I have them, as they make the easy days feel even more EZ, if that makes any sense. I like to try anything odd or different and these qualified for that. I got them through .com at a real reasonable price after the Zoots I tried didn't fit. ETA: Evidently, the forums don't like the c1ymb Edited by cdban66 2015-05-14 11:51 AM |

We have two units for our house. One had problems two summers ago. For two guys to check for leaks and recharge the unit it was over $1,000...mostly "labor". I had J talk them down because I told him one guy came an hour late, stood around under the ladder, and left early. This was a reputable company in town, but they have people over a barrel during AZ summers. But glad you can enjoy your first race with great weather |

Also keep an eye out for it being a championship race as it has in the past. That might help it sell a little sooner. |

The LRS has mostly directed me toward Hokas because of the cushioning. I'm not wearing my Bondis lately because of the knee pain issues I've been having so I'm only using 1 pair of running shoes. They're Hoka Constants, which have cushion but more stability than other Hokas. I might try rotating in the Bondis and see how they go or I might check out the Ons so I can have at least 1 other pair. Luckily, the LRS carries them so I can give them a try. |
