so here's a question... I have seen this on many pictures of people basically going the whole out distance on the inside of the buoys... do the kayakers help them get back on the correct side or do they let these people keep on the inside? Obviously this is a shorter route than if you start to the right... if they allow these people to stay to the inside what keeps more people from doing so?

And from the pics it is not just a few... there are more than several.

From what I have heard and saw.  they will let you go inside but they make you go around the orange buoys at the ends.  Though I'm sure during the meetings they tell you to stay on the outside.  I'm suprised as well that more people don't move to the left more.

From what I saw last year and from what people have written in their RR, you can swim on the inside of the bouys as long as when you get to the turns you go around the last bouy so that you are for sure going the same distance. They have kayakers out there to make sure they all go around that last bouy which i imagine would be insanely hard to do if you are on the inside of it already...

Glad to hear everyone's training is going well.

I was scheduled to go up to LP next week for the Fireman Ironman Training Camp, but will not be able to make it.  (2 trips up to LP from Florida within 6 weeks isn't going to work).  I would hate for it to go to waste and since many of you live nearby I would be happy to transfer it over to you.  (Maybe you can buy me beer after the race   )  I have pasted a link to the info below.  If you are interested message me.

I believe this to be true. You can swim on the inside as long as you go around the buoys. Not sure why more people do not do it, nor do I understand why it is permitted. They are just missing out on all of the fun on the outside. They must not get hit, kicked or swam over much at all! So sad!

X2.  In most triathlons you can swim on either side of the sight-line bouys but you MUST always go around the outside of the Corner bouys.

DOH! I just KNEW I shouldn't have posted that last photo - now you all know my "secret" swim strategy!

DC is correct. At IMLP (as in many courses) there are two types of buoys: course markers (for sighting) and turn buoys. You have to go around the outside of the turn buoys, but you can swim on either side of the course markers unless specifically prohibited from doing so. In WTC races this will be spelled out in the athlete guide. This rule is usually employed when there is a true "out-and-back" course. LP is actually a long skinny box. At IMLP if you get too far to the inside though the kayakers WILL herd you back toward the cable to ensure that you do not collide with swimmers going in the opposite direction. As noted above, making the turn from the inside can be pretty rough on the outbound legs, but from my single experience the inside is a great place to be on both inbound legs.

But shhhhhhhhh! Don't tell anybody else...

We always share bike porn, how about a little shoe porn instead:

Shoe Porn

Probably just about my last new thing before Lake Placid - I just got a new pair of Sidi T3s with the new integrated speedplay sole which allows you to get rid of the adapter plate and thus moves the shoe a little closer to the spindle. It also saves a WHOPPING 11g per shoe (almost 1/2 of gel packet for the pair!) So I should be killing it up the climbs from now on. I went in to my fitter this morning to check my fit with them - we dropped the seat on my road bike by a couple of mm but interestingly he elected to leave the tri bike the same. I'll have an easy 1.5 hour bike (after OWS) with the wife tomorrow to break them in a little, then a 4 hour/1:45 brick in the rain on Sunday that should completely ruin that fancy white patent leather finish.

While I was there I also picked up several cases of premixed Perform at half price - i guess it is about time to start drinking that yucky stuff in training. Still trying to decide on my marathon shoes - Nike quit making my favorites (of course) so now I am trying a couple of alternatives. The brick this weekend should help me decide. hmmmm - New bike shoes AND new running shoes this weekend. I'll let you know if that is a good idea or not...

Anybody else changing anything up in the last 6 weeks or are you all dialed in?

Ha, Jason - now that is funny! With the yardage you have been putting up this year I was planning on drafting off you! And you know DC is gonna try to sneak over there... maybe we can just jump on his feet and form up the BT Express...? That's it - I am starting to practice my swim drafting TOMORROW.

Really, even if you start way out to the right and swim an angle all the way to the first turn, the math would equate to only a little bit extra and you have clean water.  There is a lot of bumping along the buoy line because of the guide rope underneath.

If you use the Pythagoreum Theorum, and guesstimating that the long side of the swim is 900m long, and you start 100m over to the right and swim to the turn, you only add about 6m.

Hey guys here's ny.little report as my eyes are getting heavier. Weather was 42f this morning when we left at 7:30. No wind until I climbed to Wilmington. I was in the first wave and the people in my wave are wayyyy faster than my pace lol. My first time here so my first impression is It's beautiful out here!!!! If you haven't been here I recommend driving the course before hand esp the descent part cause that's where the pretty stuff is mostly. When u ride it u won't have the time to see the river or lake on your right or even the mini falls coming out of the mountain. Coming out of town there is a climb but to me It's not a false flat! I saw the uphill coming and felt it. The roads kinda shittyw cause of the cracks and loose sands. The descent is a bit crazy with crosswind (2nd loop) youd think that you'll be covered cause the mountains on both sides but really It's a wind tunnel!! I squeezed that brake hard and i was still going at 35-40mph. I got carbon wheels so ly braking is a bit weak. Don't let this scare you the second loop was much more comfortable!!! The flat section I was going at 22ish mph and you'll see your ave climb. Right after out and back I think the toughest hills are the ones leading to Wilmington !!!! Long and very little rest in between. I was on my last ring and I could never stay in zone 2! For finkster peeps how do u guys climb? So u try to stay in zone two? Or try as much as possible to stay close in zone 2? When i tried to stay in zone 2 I climbed at 6mph lol. The first loop it took me 4hrs and second loop it took me 3.5hrs. It was much more head wind and crosswind in lap two and the roads were a bit wet from the rain earlier while I was out somewhere. Major BC what time did you ride out today? I tried to find you but I just can't make out from your picture on how you look like. U probably saw me just didn't know. I'll be leaving @ 730 again tomorrow. Would love to meet.some of you.

Oh, I stayed on the cable the two times I've raced there.  You just have to know you're going to be beat up.  And if you're not close to the cable...maybe 4-6 swimmer's widths, you might as well be out in clearer water.

Also... DON'T freakin' stop at the turns.  Jeez...last time I raced there, people just piled up because the people who can't turn and swim were all bobbing in the water, saying 'Yay, we made the first turn' and not swimming.  Get out of the way!

Okay, so we are at the precipice of Placid peak training.  Going forward our tried and true motto to everyone and everything is: "Don't you know I'm training for an Ironman?"  All of the training from Christmas till now was simply to prepare us for the Here & Now.  The Real Training.  PEAK TRAINING.

If you think you skipped out on responsiblities and regular life commitments before, just wait and see how bad it'll get in the next 4 weeks.  Fatigue will be at an ALL TIME High.  We will be cranky and irritable when not training, and there will be little to NO TIME for anything BUT 'Ironman Training'.

So again, our 'Get Out of Jail Free Card' is our tried and true statement to everyone and everything is, [repeat aloud]:   "Don't You know I'm training for an Ironman?"

For example:

Your spouse says to you, "Honey, you haven't mowed the lawn in a few weeks, and my sister is getting married this weekend and you haven't even picked up your tux yet.  What's going on?"

To which we respond, "The yard can wait till August.  And doesn't your sister know I'm training for an Ironman?"

________________

Your spouse says to you, "Honey, your boss is wondering why you haven't shown up to work the last few days?"

To which we respond, "Duh, I've been too exhausted from Ironman training.  I told my boss I'm doing an Ironman.  What the heck?"

_________________

Your child calls out softly from their bedroom, "Come read me a bedtime story"

To which you peek your head in an respond, "Sweetie, I'm real sorry, but you know I'm training for an Ironman, right?  I have to get up at 4:30 tomorrow morning so I can swim 2 miles straight and then sit on a bike seat for six and a half hours. I need to get to bed now.  See me in August, okay sweetie "

________________

Whether it's the bank calling about the damn late mortgage payment, the arrogant cop who pulls you over for doing 80 mph on a side street on the way to the pool, or the annoying divorce lawyer speaking on behalf of your spouse (who no longer speaks directly to you) and has packed their bags and left, stating they did so because: you haven't mowed the lawn or done any other chores around the house; haven't shown up to work in days; spent zero time with the kids; have been fired from our job; have forgotten to pay a few measly bills like the mortgage and utilities - You boldy explain to that lawyer "Dammit, don't you know?  I'm training for a freaking Ironman!?!"

Thank you for this. I love it. It is my new mantra. Hehe. Dead here after 5 hours on the bike and 30 minute run one week after a half IM. Nothing is getting done today!!
