Race morning goes like this for me (usually). I pack an load everything in the car the night before, so this is pretty simple.
1.) Wake up 3.2 seconds after falling asleep--usually around 4-4:30am
2.) Get dressed
3.) Eat breakfast (2 eggs, toast, coffee) and try to remember if I forgot anything.
4.) Drive--I live in a rural area, so most races are at least 1-2 hours away. Along the way I will try to drink a qt of water and maybe a soda for caffeine.
5.) Check-in, wander around like I don't know what I'm doing, finally get my bike out of the car and set up my transition area.
6.) Attend pre-race meeting (if there is one) or stand around waiting for the pre-race meeting that never happens.
7.) Warm up a little, but never enough. I would like 10+ min in the water before my heat, but that never happens. Run a little for warm up. Stretch.
8.) Wait--almost always in the last heat to start.

All the while I'm chatting with people all around.

152/400--2 mi run this morning to shake out the legs after yesterday's bike ride. Swim scheduled for later this morning too.

DAAAAAAAMN!!!!!! Killer whip! Congrats!

I jumped on the new bike train a couple weeks ago too... All-City Macho Man Disc. Steel CX style for the gravel grinders that are luring me in.
Can't argue with my 25mi ride yesterday, where I saw ZERO cars the whole time! The only cars where on the roads to/from my neighborhood. Once in the country (two miles from home), there where NONE. Tractors and Turkeys in the fields, sure, but not one other car passed by me. It was very, very nice!!

fifthcircle - Turkey you say, I'll visit with my 835 during the season

My race ritual changes a little for my HIM and IM because you have to stage everything the day before so race morning all you do is show up with a wet suit go over some last min gear checks. But for the others:

I get up about 430 because hey its what i have to do to get my training in so why not. I go downstairs and double check my bag. I normally have my post race clothes and all my gear, lubes (bike and run), pain killers, gels, and drink powder in my tri bag. I pull my water bottles out of the freezer, normally fill 1/2 and freeze it, then top it off in the am. By the time I get to them they have thawed and are still cool. put the bike and bag in the truck and grab my water bottle. I eat a banana protein and peanut butter shake. Then off to the race I go. I always drink water while I am driving there. When possible I have my race numbers set up on my helmet and race belt already, if not I do this first thing when I get there. Then body marking (I almost always have them write 28 then have to cross it out and put my actual age). I get my T1/T2 set up the way I want. I then walk over to the swim in and walk the path to my bike. I go over T1 in my head (goggles in hand put them on the towel, helmet on, socks and shoes on, drink water, sunglasses, pull bike and go) then I walk out the Bike out to the mount line. Then I walk back to my bike and make sure my T2 is the way I want it. I double check to make sure the bike is in the correct gear for my mount. If it is a pool swim I will not do much else I will mingle a little and do some light stretching. If its OWS then I put on the wet suit and body glide for ankles, neck, and wrist. I will get in the water to get use to it. I double check that my garmin is working. I'll eat some blocks or chomps about 30 min before the start.

I got in my run today and will be leaving soon for my swim. It was slower than I would have liked but it was pretty warm out.

It's the wrong color.  Bianchis should only be celeste - nothing less.  Also, I think running a Shimano (or SRAM) groupo on a Bianchi is a complete foul - Campy, preferably a vintage NOS 8 speed setup.  That would seriously screw with people

OK, like 10 times I tried to change my profile pic and it just kept reposting that snow pic! Anyways, I finished the marathon!
It took a lot longer than I'd hoped- A goal was break 5 hours, B goal was around 5 hours, C goal was finish before the course closed. I did make the C goal!
It was a hot day, and my feet and back hurt more than I was prepared for. I kept a good pace that didn't feel too hard for about the first half, then I decided not to worry about 5 hours and just enjoy the day.And I did!

Checking in with everyone...so jealous of the new bikes!!!

Looks like I'd better get my (BD) A$$ back in the pool, because I'm looking at doing a sprint on June 6th, a full 4-6 weeks before I'd planned on racing. The swim is only a quarter mile, but I don't think I've swum a stroke in six months. :-) Been spending a lot of time on the bike, and I'm pretty happy with the speeds I'm seeing right now compared with last year. Still nothing that's going to get me on a podium, but it is a hybrid. And I was pleased with my running time this past weekend. I think I figured out where/why I was struggling so badly with even LIKING running again....once I was green-lit to start, I decided to avoid using my iphone or listening to music just so I'd have a better awareness of my surroundings (since my peripheral vision is gone). Nice in theory....but I've got to say, running with my playlists makes those tough moments WAY more bearable. :-) So I'm back to it.

Wearing my bike jersey as I type! Do we have a challenge on for the month? Maybe 29/31?

I hope you enjoy your accomplishment as much as you enjoyed your day! Congrats on reaching your goal of finishing the marathon. This is one time when someone from Cleveland is happy about a person from Pittsburg doing well!

Don't a sprint on D-Day is bad@55! Sorry to hear you're missing out on your music. I was enjoying my own music today and can't imagine running without it

Last minute entry for a sprint this weekend. My son turned 10 last week so he is doing it with me. 1/4 mi, 11 mi, 5k. Big time for a 10 year old. I think he's more than ready. He swims 1500 at practice with me, bikes 10-15 mi quite often and has run a number of 5k's. I plan on staying with him the entire way. I am going to miss my swim wave start to hang back and swim next to him then stay together the rest of the race. Well that is if he doesn't drop me on the run

Well done.

fifth- if only I could take a few days

Sadi- I hear you on the music while running thing. I do my brick runs with no music and it is not nearly as much fun. I am thinking of taking the penelty for my IM and wearing headphones.

Alex- That sounds awesome. I am hoping I can get my little one to do a sprint when she is old enough.

Got in my brick this morning. Even rode outside. I have my semi annual PT test and semi annual qualification so its going to be a long day at work. I'll check in later tonight when I am done. Y'all keep up the good work!

Hey All - just checking in. Glad to see everyone doing so well the past week! Christina congrats on the marathon! And the posting of the profile pic - lol.

Thanks for the tips on emailing myself the pics. Gotta run at the moment but I'll give that a shot tonight.

Couple weeks back I said I was taking time off running to deal with a back injury. Well then I hurt my hips. Turns out the hip flexors were trying to compensate for the low back pain. I'll get it all sorted, but I'm back to my workout schedule more or less, just haven't run in 3 weeks and haven't swam in 2.5, so that will be fun to pick back up. I just want to get to it!

Dave - can't get out on Mother's Day. Wasn't going to be able to race at all but I really wanted to come by and cheer you on. My wife has informed me of all the yard work I need to do that day, and THEN we can go to my mom's for dinner.... Oy.

Anyway - rock on with your first Tri of 2015, and I hope the water is somewhere above 48!!

final update for the day. My PT test did not go well, it was very legs intensive and since I had just done my brick a hour before and had nothing to eat my time was less than stellar. On a positive note I shot well only having 1 round barely outside the full value ring. My legs are ready for some rest tonight before my bike ride tomorrow. No rain forecasted so maybe outside again.

Managed to get my walk in yesterday afternoon before dinner so that's good. But got to the gym this morning and realized I had left my swim suit at home. Thought about going commando - but figured that wouldn't go over too well at the Y.

Hoping to get out this afternoon for a ride.

Prost!

Sigh

Been in a training rut the last few days..haven't had the energy or drive to do much of anything..

My first race is at the end of the month, and I'm just tired..

I'm not sure how, but I need to get it in gear.. :/

Devon--don't beat yourself up. Try taking a rest day and see if that helps. Often deep fatigue is a sign of over training. Couple that with your recent injuries, and you may just be taxing your body a little too much.

Double workout day for me (156 & 157/400)--4.22mi run this morning with the pup and then 1200 yds in the pool this afternoon (without the pup). Run was okay. I've been trying to keep my HR down under 150 lately, which makes me feel SLOW(er). I even had to walk a few times to keep that HR down today, especially up hills. I haven't had to walk on a run in nearly a year, so I'm trying to keep myself from feeling like I'm back sliding (nevermind the fact that last year at this time any running would have my HR up at 180ish). Swim was good. Just a short little one, but I felt good and did a couple of sets of 500 because I needed to think about some work stuff and if I do long sets I can do that without counting laps. Worked! I got my swim in and got work done!

Happy Training!

lol @ Dave and Gretchen.

Gretchen btw - I use my workouts to forget about work. I can't imagine doing the opposite - I'd be more stressed than I already am... Glad you were productive!

Devon - +1 on not beating yourself up. No one (well except maybe Gretchen, and professional athletes) can be 'on' all the time and do every scheduled workout. I've found at least for me that when your body is telling you to take an unscheduled recovery day, do it and you'll be ready to go tomorrow. If you push through, you'll probably have a bad workout and won't feel any better tomorrow.

My race day start not so early but earlier than usual - get up at 7, have breakfast (coffee, 2 peanut butter and honey toasts or 1 PB&H bagel), double check my gear is complete in the car from last night, and drive to the race drinking 300-400ml water. Once there, leave the staff, get my wetsuit, googles, swimming cup and flip-flops, and start my Garmin in multi-sport mode. 15 min prior 1 gel and water again. And no music, try to enjoy the environment and talk to strangers to calm down. Always worried my breakfast will be not enough or too much.... But so fat this routine has worked for me: just once it did not, last Oly in October 2014 my googles broke just a few minutes before starting the race. Now I take not 2 but 3 pairs of googles.

Morning All!

157/400 this morning with the last spin class of the semester. It kicked my butt! Not sure why, but it was super hard today. Maybe the double yesterday has something to do with it? I don't know. I was thinking about trying to start keeping track of my TSS for the week and monitoring myself that way. I'm worried that I will overdo it and end up injured. I already noticed yesterday when I tried to do some yoga that I am back to being way inflexible because instead of doing a lot of yoga and strength stuff since I got back, I have focused exclusively on s/b/r. Anyone have a good resource to educate me on TSS?
