Amazing stories I can't wait to catch up on after I get home late tonight.

It was fun to meet so many of you and see some of you out on the course. It sure was cold and dark on the run.

Short version of my day...most excellent swim, started more in the thick of things and had fun while swimming which is not my typical experience. I had a IM swim PB, even had pro men swim right next to me which meant I had sighted well and was on right line.

Bike was great..felt strong the whole time especially last 30 miles. Had fun chatting some as folks passed me or I passed them.  Another PB for the bike but terrain was responsible for that. Power was a bit lower than last 2 IMs but vi was good at 1.03 and TSS 280.

Run went well for 8 miles then lack of run miles hurt me...and the pain just increased the rest of the Mary. I stuck with my .30 mile run/30" walk with only slight planned possible adaptations last 6 miles. Was with Kim for a few miles which was great. Proud of my mental ability to keep on even with severe discomfort. My run pace was slowing down but faster than walking so kept with it.

Finished 15:26 which is PB. Given my year and issues pleased but know healthy with solid consistent training I could be quite bit faster. I learned a lot this year that will help me in the  years to come.

I'm in for '11.

Write you your RRs!

Recover well everyone

i dunno about y'all but my transition times were TERRIBLE!!! T1 was 16 minutes, T2 was 11mins!!!! man i lost sooo much time there.

but i was pretty happy w/ my first IM ever, finished in 12:00:45. My goal was to go sub 13 hours so even though i wish i had gone 46 seconds faster, i'm still really proud of myself.

here's a quick video my brother in law made, thought it was pretty cool although there are some racers covering me up in most of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLwh5mL6G-w&sns=em

anyone know/have an idea of when the finish photos will be available online to view/purchase?

do they sell the finish line video anywhere?

Congrats to all finishers, jockstraps, volunteers, and officials.  It was fun to be a volunteer and see what happens behind the scenes.  Didn't know if everyone knew it, but one swimmer was found face-down at the first turn buoy on the 2nd lap (by another swimmer).  Water safety was alerted, a kayaker got to the scene first, whistled for the sea-doo, swimmer was taken to shore and recussitated.  He was walking in transition not long thereafter.  This is no bull-was told to me by kayaker that made the alert to the sea-doo, as we were taking a volunteer lunch break.

If not for a wetsuit, an alert competitor, and an expert water-safety team, it could've been a disaster.  As it was, it just ended up as a DNF.  The swimmer's explanation was "I was on my 2nd lap, got pushed left approaching the turn, was tired, rolled right to breathe, ingested a ton of water, and the next thing I remember is getting kissed by a dude" or something to that effect.

p.s. My two friends I was there "jockstrapping" for went 12:25 and 11:19, both first-time IMers.

Had to share this photo too, saw it as I was working transition:

holy crap, $4,000++ Cervelo P4 w/ a non-aero water bottle in place of the super-aero bottle AND candy bars instead of gels??? that is one interesting cyclist!
but by the looks of it, that is most likely a pro's bike. notice their shoes are clipped in; to my knowledge only the pros were allowed to leave their shoes on their bikes and not in their T1 bags (or maybe i'm wrong???).  seems even weirder that the front wheel in that pic APPEARS to be an aero/carbon wheel and the rear does not????
that bike is all sorts of confusing

Nothing wrong with candy bars! I had a Snickers taped onto my aero bars that was absolutely delicious at mile 80 on the bike.

alcatrazswimmer - 2010-10-31 1:18 PM Worried sick after I had horrific failure in my first Ironman attempt when I did Ironman St. George UT. I am a Sea Level athlete, and all the factors, were horrific, the allitude effects, chip seal pavement, freezing 50 degree water, nowhere to train for the gigantic hill climbs there during WI wintery hell. I missed time cut off mile 64 and was DNFed. I did train very hard and I was totally devastated by the whole thing. I feel into a depression over it. I am working my way out of it by I would say that that I am not 100%, as they say that when a boxer is savagely beaten and knocked out they are never the same a again, they go down much easier each time after that, and that is how I feel. I had an Achillis tendon injury 6 weeks before the race also which was a factor also. I have very good stamia, strength and toughness, but not the greatest of speed as I am a football player and wrestler by sport and all muscle. i weighed 180 in SG and gained 12 pounds in my depression and can't see to drop the weight now. Here is the question I have: is there any way to estimate my abilities based on my times in my last 3 IM 70.3 races, 100 mile bike rides and marathon time to see if I can do this because if I do it and fail again, it will mess me up further. I was looking at some other peoples times and it seemed like they were like double their 70.3 time plus 2 hours, and in my case that would put me with one hours of leeway and that is cutting it way too close for comfort. My times are: IM 70.3 Brazil 7:05:00 in 2010 IM 70.3 Racine 7:16:00 in 2010 Marine Corps marathon 4:50 in 2009 IM 70.3 Steelhead 6:50:00 in 2009 I did 4 100 mile rides in the last 2.5 months all about 6:15:00 +/- 10 minutes My swim times in the 500 yard are consistently 11:30, I can not go any faster. SWAM 5K 2009 Big Shoulders Race 2:05:00 5K 2008 Big Shoulders Race 2:04:00 I am fast enough to comfortably make the cut off times in this race or should I just pull out right now? I do not know what to do? Please comment, because I do not have that much knowledge on this. Thank you. Matt

took me a while to find this post but HUGE CONGRATS on finishing IMFL   WHOOP WHOOP you did it!!! Hope you had a great race!

On my second loop I saw a swimmer put on something like a sleigh, strapped down behind a jet ski. I thought it weird place to get rescued but looked like fit thin women. Person was alert and cooperating. Not sure if it was same swimmer or not.

Very scary to hear about that swimmer but thankfully they were spotted, rescued and are fine!

I think I'll get a tri top printed along the same lines for the race next year. It will make it more fun and folks will shout out to me.

Did not see many Bt folks  Just the lady from whales.. Had a good race, not as fast as I was hoping but very happy with 11:52. Swim was great and bike decent, run was slower than I hoped.  Transitions need help.       Congrats to all the racers and Ironman finishers.    Now we start training for Lake Placid   ugggg

but that pic REALLY does not do his situation justice. the lower back portion of his black tri suit had a unique off brown "rabbit tail" look to it, hard to believe that no one got a pic from the rear

I went through the motivation centre with her on her second loop.  the announcer said "And here comes the birthday girl on her second lap!  you're almost done!!!).  It was pretty awesome

I carried a damn Snickers with me for most of the Mary and dropped it after mile 22 but was past the point of trying to pick it up.  I remember that eating a snickers was one of my goals, oh well.  I finished!

Socks and other IMFL Friends,

Yes I wanted to let you know that I did finish in 15:15:09, which was perfectly fine for me. It was an amazing experience. I wanted to sincerely thank all of you for you encouragement at time when I really needed it. I also really liked PNC a lot. I thought the course was very good. I though the community fans/supporters where excellent. I made it throughout with any serious incident or injury.

Does anyone know if there is a way to every get/buy a copy of the video feed of the finish line? A friend back home said they were watching and saw me cross? Now I am so relieved. Thanks again and I will be in touch again soon.

Sincerely,

Matt

Congrats Matt!!!

They haven't offered finish line video's for sale in last couple years.

My family worked finish line and three of them took videos of me...so i have mine at various angles including when I fell down.

I enjoyed meeting everyone and had a great first Ironman.
