![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys. Vent warning. I've always believed that honesty is the best policy, and we are all here for a support system, so this is why I've been MIA around here, and in training. Been going through a lot of stuff over the last week...stuff I'm disappointed that occurred. So last Saturday at work I ran into an old friend at work...we had things end on a bad note months ago, and hadn't spoke since. I was hesitant at first with her because of our history. I ran into her at 4AM last Sunday morning(my Saturday)..I know, NOTHING good comes after 2am. When I finally did get off work, we ended up going back out to one of the local casinos for a drink...which led to two..:which led to an 8 hour drinking binge...followed by me having to work that night on 3 hours of sleep. If this was the end of the story, that's no big deal...but that was just the beginning. Ever since its been like a bucking bull that I'm just holding on for dear life, alcohol, drugs, sex, the works..the days go something like...go to work, get off work go out somewhere and go hard until the sun is up, grab a few hours of sleep and be back at it all over again. I haven't trained, I've eaten like absolute crap..fast forward to last night..things got realllly bad, I did nothing at all to her, and she snapped and flipped out on me. I was getting to close to her, and she pushed me away...just like last time. I knew it was going to happen, it happened last time..but I let it happen anyways. I feel guilty because I've come so far over the last 5 months, and something as simple as this girl can throw me completely off my rocker. I've got a race in less than 3 weeks, and I'm not focused on it at all.. I know I will come out of this situation with a new lesson learned, and a better focus and drive than when I went in..and maybe for that this last week or so was worth it..it might not have been physical training, but mentally it could steer me in the right track.. Sorry guys for missing out on training and everything here, y'all really are a fantastic group that I am happy to be a part of. I'm sure a lot will see this wall of text and scroll past, for those that actually took the time to read it, thank you, I needed somewhere to vent and confess everything so I can move on. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Devon, hang in there and try to focus on your upcoming race! On Saturday I ran my favorite charity run that goes 10k from Morro Rock up the beach to the Cayucos pier. A few years ago it was my very first running event and inspired me to become the recreational endurance athlete I am today. This years performance was not as good as I would have liked. I took 2 weeks off from running after my half-marathon to rest my foot and boy did I feel it! Never quite got into my running grove, "Use it or lose it!" |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nice report Dave! Devon, there's nothing you can do about yesterday but make today and tomorrow better. Like you said live and learn. Go for a short run and it will turn your momentum around. Mark, sorry your time off slowed you down. I'm in the boat too with my first race in three weeks. My knee feels a ton better, so I'm back jogging. I'm way undertrained for my race and crazy rain has kept me from mountain biking and general laziness has kept me from swimming- but oh well! My parents' health has been taking a lot of time and that just comes first. Honestly, I'm contemplating doing this race I signed up for and then maybe just keeping the run focus I've been on to simplify things. I'm not sure having a 5yo two parents with dementia and a job is something to throw training in three sports on top of. The only one that's really hard for me is the swimming. It's just so time consuming and mind numbing. I feel like I should do things I enjoy in my spare time. Anyone been here? What did you end up doing? |
![]() ![]() |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mark- the run will come back. After my stress fracture it tool me a long time to get my mileage back up but once I did I have found I am faster. Devon - We have all hit slumps in training, I slept though my swim and run today. no sense in crying over spilled milk. If you still want to compete then reassess your training plan and see if you need to change it and start plugging away. If you need some additional accountability get a garmin or log your workouts on garmin connect. We can all see them and hold each other accountable. Moonrocket - I had to buy a waterproof ipod off amazon. It has really helped the mind numbing effect of swimming. It also has cut out the ear infections which had become a regular part of my life. I now use wax or ipod for every swim. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() All this time I thought you were a horse based on your avatar... Based on the bike in the background and the waiting child, I am guessing you made your husband get off the bike for pic...funny, I get ordered off my bike by my wife to take pics as well. haha. New user ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Devon - one step at a time, focus on a short simple race, and look forward. Up and downs do happen, but short/mid term focus will get you in a better position. There is a spanish saying "Lo pasado, pasado está" which means "whatever happened, already happened". Mark - too bad post-race "blues" slowed you down, but now you got the motivation! Thor - you and Moonrocket are lucky to have your partner take pictures, don´t complain, rest of us take selfies. Moonrocket - many times I have a similar feeling, am I pushing too much my free-time? Kids, family, job, travelling.... and finding the extratime to train is always a struggle. But in my case it does work: if I do not do it and take it easy, I will have the same "obligations" and will do much less in my free time. And would be extremely frustrated for not doing what I want, triathlon. So I´d rather struggle some days or miss some workouts than not do what I like. Juan |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ha ha- I told him I needed a picture in my BDAS jersey! I'm the photographer and am rarely ever in a picture- so I think it's fair to ask occasionally. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() bike 1:15 on trainer and swim 2500 straight done. Now off to do a little lifting. Going to be a long day at work due to protest season kicking up. I am going to ride the IM Raleigh 70.3 bike course with a friend who is racing it. He has never done a tri, but is doing it as his first. I loaned him my wetsuit and will be trying to go watch him if work allows. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Busy around here lately, not much time for posting as I get ready for another long Egypt trip. Up to 162/400 this morning with a 3 mi run. It felt great, like I could do it forever. Kept my HR avg at 145 and never went over 160. I was aiming for <150, so feel like I did pretty well. My avg time is starting to come down, even though I feel like a snail when I try to keep my HR down. Now, if I could just convince the dog that she does not need to water every blade of grass along the route, I could make some serious headway on my running! Hope everyone is hanging in there. Race season is just around the corner (or upon us), so keep your eye on the prize! I am considering signing up for a "short" course race a couple of weeks after I return from Egypt. Same deal as last time, something to keep me motivated to train in some really terrible conditions. I only worry about the 19mi bike leg. I haven't often ridden that far (and would be relatively slow at doing so) and I won't have had a chance to really get in a ton of biking when I return. Of course, if I have my new bike by then, it could be a great way to show it off! I don't have to decide quite yet. I don't leave for another three days. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have signed off a student to go up for his checkride to become a certified flight instructor. His 6 hour oral exam starts at 3:00 this afternoon. I am running in the Corporate Cup 5k tonight at 6:00....my mind will not be where it needs to be. I am a wreck. LOL. I am sure he will be fine - one of the sharpest students I've ever instructed, but I'm still a mess whenever I sign someone off. Tomorrow is the flight check for 2.5 hours. I'm hoping that by noon tomorrow I will be cracking a beer. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did a 5k Corporate Cup Challenge today at our capitol. My plan was to run 0.5 and walk for 1 minute intervals for the knee. Yeah....like that was going to happen. LOL First of all I have a hard time doing that anyway, and second of all over 4,000 people came out to run it (okay, so that's about 10% of our population hahaha). If I stopped to walk I would probably get run over and most certainly tick people off behind me. LOL I chugged it out up hill and down. The knee feels pretty good. I started my watch 0.05 miles late so it shows 3.05 on the distance and my time for that was 26:10. The full 5k time was 27:30. Talk about a slow slogging start in the throngs - what a difference. LOL. All in all it was fun and I'm glad I did it - I haven't run a 5k in many years!! I need to do more of these. They're quick and wham, it's over. Beer time! LOL Cheers all!! oh, my student was still in his oral exam at 21:00 tonight! Over 6 hours of questions....and he has to fly at 08:00 tomorrow. Poor guy. He will be happy when this is over! I always wondered what aviatrix was in reference to. Now I know. Being a student of Latin whenever I saw your screen name I would always think 'bird woman' lol. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been absent for a little while but I've been following everyone's posts. Seems everyone is having the usual ups and downs of training for the most part. As for me, I had another bike race 1.5 weeks ago on Sunday. I DNF'd due to a crash. Sheared 8 spokes on my front tire. Last week I was in the Blue Mountains here in Ontario doing some race recon and hill training for my big race at the end of the month. I have another race coming up in Niagara this weekend. I'm hoping to stand on the podium at this one. My biggest setback in training has been weight. I've let it get a little high for me. Trying to get it under control again.
Here's my wheel after the crash.

(Positive vibes from me and lots of hard work from you). Bird woman...either a superhero or a cranky, scrawny, ole woman with a hook nose....I'll take superhero. LOL |

Guess when you are in a race, your knee is already 'healed' for those 27 min (and being now a superhero does help"" ![]() Juan |

Of course I only have a glider instructor raiting, but for me that was only 20 flights, then an in house flight test. I think for powered aircraft instruction here it is something similar to that as well.... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I wore my doubleXL bike jersery for the first time this week, and although I loved it, it was a little tight..... This is a serious reality check, and I wondering when I am finally going to get it and smarten up! I was too embarrassed to even have my wife take a picture, I am going to suck it up and get a pic up here soon guys. Hope training is going well. I am going to be working and painting my basement all weekend! whoo, my goal is to get out for a 4K to see where i am at for my 5K in June, then set up a short traning plan based on how that goes. If I do that I get a 'Steam Whistle' Pilsner! Cheers |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Justin, take a picture now and take one at the end of the summer - kind of a before and after series. It will give you affirmation and validation of what you did over the summer! So my student passed!!! I shouldn't be surprised, he's going to make a fantastic instructor. He's a former Army helicopter pilot and flew medi-vac helicopters for a while as well so he has a good number of flight hours - just not in a plane. I am so going to have a couple of beers tonight!!! .....after I coach baseball. :-D 2700 yards in the pool mid-day following by a visit to the PT. I am physically spent. I think I'll look ahead to my HIM Labor Day weekend and start the running for that and continue my current plan for the HIM/Aquabike - swim/bike piece at the end of June. I'm still taking the running slow and hanging out at the 5k distance for a few weeks to keep the knee on track. I look forward to eventually getting some speed workouts back in to get my speed back up and comfortable. Looking forward to a GREAT weekend!! I don't know what I'm doing yet (outside of soccer on Sunday), but it's going to be great!! LOL Maybe some riding and a little more swimming. whoop whoop!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That is an amazing idea Jenn, before and after is a great plan, I am going to do that! thank you. Glad to hear about your student, I am currently training someone as a new flight service specialist and I have trained many glider pilots throughout the year, it is nice seeing that sucess, it not only validates your own work, but I find that I am more happy for the success of these people that you have such a vested interest in. Army Medevac Helicopter pilot though! You need magic to make those crazy machines operate! |
