Sunny
Total Time = 1h 31m 11s
Overall Rank = 143/359
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 18/38
Pre-race routine:

Friday night we went for packet pick up, where we got a preview of the chocolate fondue, and for dinner at Paradise Bakery (Panera). Had french onion soup and a tuna salad sandwich. No beer, bad Manatee. Took some melatonin because I have trouble sleeping the night before a race.

Set the alarm for 5:45 but woke up at 5:30 and got up and moving. Had a sandwich thin with green chili mango jelly and a chai. I wondered as I ate the sandwich if my choice of jelly (wasn't feeling pb) was going to "come back" and bite me. It turned out to be a non issue.
Event warmup:

Stood/sat around. People watched. The 5k started at 7:15 so I watched them head out then went back to use the port-o-john, set up my ipod and take my stuff to check in. About 10 minutes before the 15k start I headed over to the start line to wait.

Comments:

Started the first couple of miles feeling pretty tight. I figured once I got a couple miles in the legs would loosen up, which they did. At the 1 and 2 mile markers I was way faster than I expected I'd be. I walked first aid station at about 2 miles. Took a gatorade and a water. After that I noticed my breathing was still difficult so I started run 5 walk 1/2. Continued this through until about 6 miles when I noticed my breathing felt better. I walked the 4 mile and 6 mile aid stations too. Sticking with the gatorade and water.

At the 10k mark I was pretty stoked because I was pretty sure I'd hit a 10k PR! At about mile 6 I started feeling the glutes/hip flexors. Not to bad but they made themselves known. After I walked the 8 mile aid station they started to really hurt. It was all I could do to keep picking my feet up. The left side REALLY hurt. My breathing was still good so I didn't want to walk so I scrounged up some HTFU and kept running.

5k 28:28 not a PR but ok with it
10k 58:58 PR!!!!!

I pictured the chocolate fondue waiting for me at the end! At about mile 5 the course markers started being beyond what my GPS gave me for the same markers, so I knew I was going to have to go a bit longer. After I made the final turn I had about a block to go. DH took some finish line photos and I look like I was still moving pretty good. I didn't expect DH to be there so it was a nice surprise for him to be at the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure what caused the hip/glute pain. Maybe not used to constant flat, maybe not used to constant pavement. Pretty happy with my race overall
Post race
Warm down:

As I came through the finish I was handed some wrapped chocolates and a couple bottles of water. From there I walked to the table where I received my "finishers award", a divided bowl holding a cup of hot chocolate, chocolate fondue and lots of stuff to dip. I found a place to sit and surveyed the goods. The fondue was YUMMO! I dipped the banana, the apples and the pretzels. I gave the marshmallow and rice krispie treat to DH to dip. After I enjoyed my fondue, I went to the expo and bought a tech shirt then went to get my stuff from check in.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Sore hip/glute (buttocks) More training. I'll get more weekly runs in when I begin my HIM training in a few weeks

Event comments:

I was a bit nervous about this race because RAM Racing has had some bad RR and reviews from Chicago and DC. It may be because Albuquerque is the metroplex that those cities are but the logisitics of this race were well done. I had no trouble finding parking, there were plenty of port-o-johns at the start and on the course. There were tons of volunteers. Everything from packet pick-up to receiving my post race food went smoothly. There was plenty of water and gatorade on the course. And the food at the end? YUMMO!!!! The hot chocolate was mediocre. This is the only negative item I've read from prior races that hasn't been corrected. I would absolutely do another RAM Racing event. I had a great time!

Not sure why I look angry in the photo with my finishers cup. Maybe I was squinting because I forgot my shades.

Good job on the 10k PR en route to the 15k.

And very interesting to hear that this HotChocolate race wasn't a disaster, as the Chicago and DC versions were. Perhaps RAM needs to continue to hone its craft on smaller races like this before re-attempting the bigger venues.

I agree. They seem to be making positive changes based on prior feedback, including giving us a full banana instead of half.  I think they have another Chicago coming up.  I hope it goes well.

Congrats on a great race!  I wish we had a Hot Chocolate race here as receiving a packet of chocolates as I cross the finish line would be my idea of heaven (if they also had beer, that would finish me off).  Of course, around here a packet of chocolates would quickly turn into a melted packet of chocolate, so I guess it's not such a good idea afterall

Well done!

Way to go TJ!  I got chocolate milk at the end of my race, and a banana, but man, some chocolate fondue would've been great!!  Glad you got a 10k PR and enjoyed the race.  DH got some great pics, too, although you don't look totally impressed in the banana eating one Laughing

Our local tri's only ever have chopped up banana and apple (if you're lucky!), a bottle of water and usually a show bag with a newspaper, a can of tuna and some ghastly muesli bar - chocolate would be awesome!

Well done on your run - and a lovely report too. 10/10Laughing

TJ, great run with a great effort. 10K PR with another 5K to go has got to be a good feeling! Really nice. It is nice to see that the whole race experience was enjoyable for you. And chocolate to boot, what a good way to start the day. Congrats on a job well done!

I know right? I wondered why I look so angry.  I think maybe I was semi-squinting because I forgot my shades.

Congrats on the 10K PR in the middle of a 15K run!  Cool

Glad to hear it went well.  We're looking at doing it in Atlanta in January.  Family is thinking of doing the 5K.  Fine for my wife and youngest daughter, they don't run, but the middle daughter is a XC runner, she needs to do the 15K distance with me.

There were lots of families doing this race.  Lots of younger kids in the 5k, and I got passed at about 10k by a middle-school-ish looking young man.  I would absolutely recommend this race.

Steve, I was hoping there would be some BTers there.  I hope they come back next year. There seem so be a lot of races over-lapping this year.

If I didn't injure my back 2 weeks ago I was just about to sign up (kind of glad I was waiting since I would have been out the $$).

I was just planning on the 5k this time, my volume has been crap all summer. 10k next time though, maybe I'll see ya at the race or another one in the future.

TJ - way to go!  What I like best is how you listened to your body and adjusted your strategy throughout the race - that's very 'mature' of you, ya know?  And you also dug down and came up with some HTFU - always a good thing!  You're photos are hot and I'm glad you had a successful day out there! Nice work, Manatee sister!  Thanks for sharing!
