Pre-race routine:

Had a light "lunch" at around midnight. Ate an apple around 2 hours before the race. Start time was at 4 am, before the sun came up.
Event warmup:

A mile walk to the start.
Run
  • 1h 50m 31s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

Started off a little to fast for the first mile at 8:09. Slowed down to try and hit my target of 8:30 PPM. Did not have anyone that I ran with so it was largely a race by myself, pushing myself and keeping myself motivated. About 6 miles in started to try and pick people off to keep pace up and stay motivated.
What would you do differently?:

Overall pleased with the race. Would change my hydration a little for more diluted powerade during the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Some stretching and a walk back to the house.

Great job!!  Despite the barbed wire and all, bet the sunrise was pretty.  Bet it was good to have it done before the heat cranked up.  Like how you used passing other people as a way to stay motivated and keep the pace up.  As always, a stellar effort!

I just finished the NYC marathon on Sunday and I think I'm going to venture into triathlons. I am doing an Olympic distance and I want to do a 70.3 next year too. Any advice?

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
