molto veloce mama ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ![]() http://www.velopress.com/triathlon.php?id=203 anyone else read, reading, or would like to read this book? it would be a great topic for a discussion in and thread and/or a chat session. yesterday i spent about an hour reading and another hour doing two of the activities and discussing them with bill. the fist activity is creating a 'prime triathlon profile' to figure out what areas are strengths, and what needs work. for me my strengths are in the areas of = motivation, intensity, ability to handle pain and adversity. areas i am working on are = confidence, emotions, consistency, and quality. the next activity i did was on confidence, and pinpointing hot button situations/causes that lead to my confidence deflating like a balloon and my effort going downhill. i posted this in my log, but i'm sharing it here so anyone who wants to know what the activities entail can get an idea of what is involved. situation #1: getting passed (usually on the run) cause: person is faster/better runner and/or i'm slower and/or not pushing myself negative self-talk: 'the work on the bike is now undone, i suck as a runner, race is over now' replacement: 'i had a STONG bike leg. i can hold my ground, or make new ground now, but i have to keep going' situation #2: losing my 'carrot' (same as above) cause: same as #1 negative self-talk: same as #1 replacement: 'find another carrot and KEEP MOVING' situation #3: not making goal time, not betting my time/pace cause: off day, illness, not pushing myself/intensity negative self-talk: >'despite my work, i'm not improving, maybe i'm not made to do this' replacement: 'your body knows what to do, your legs know what to do, push push push' after race, if goal time was not met = 'what did i learn here?' situation #4: feeling fat/unfit cause: seeing more fit people, equating body w/ fitness, thinking of bad pictures of myself from races negative self-talk: >'i'm fat and unfit and i should wear a BIG t-shirt over my tri-suit' replacement: think of positive images from past races, 'my body is strong, and fit, and capable.' hoping to progress more in the emotions area, doing some of the same workouts for 'intensity' (because intensity level can go up or down in an unhelpful way when emotions take hold). |

I posted something on training the "Mental" game a while back here and got some very interesting responses. Mental Toughness is definitely something required; especially for longer distance events. For me, the key seems to be keeping minor problems from becoming catestrophic events that derail me from my goals. Most of the training books I have speak to us like we are professionals and seem to assume we are totally committed and have ultimate confidence. (Clearly, this is not the case for me) that is cool that Ron tossed in a category for this in the logs also. (Thanks for doing this) Thanks for the post and the great book suggestion Autumn ![]() |

I bought another book on the topic, but never got through it. The whole beginning of the book was essentially about why you should buy the book and use the methods, but I found myself thinking, okay, I already bought the book, what are the methods exactly?!? Anyway, if you have been finding this book helpful and useful, I'd give it a go. What do you think of it so far in terms of its potential to really get your brain helping you in training and on race day? |

molto veloce mama ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i think that just like any other aspect of training, it will all take practice. its one thing to think of positive replacements to negative self-talk...but so much of it happens in the subconscious. one of the reasons it helped to talk things through with bill is that things came up when i was talking that i might not have been able to pull out doing the activities completely on my own (i did the activity on my own, and discused them with bill afterwards). guess a bit like psychotherapy, really ![]() anyway, once you do the profile, and pick the areas you want to work on, then you really get into the nitty gritty of mental training. i guess you could say the first part of the book is like 'so, you want to do a triathlon...well, pick a distance and a plan'...and the rest of the book is 'okay, here's how you swim, bike, run, set up transition'. |

molto veloce mama ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() had a light bulb moment last night in regards to mental training. for those who think it isn't important (or even if you do), you could think about it this way... mental training is like nutrition. you need to figure out when your body needs to take in liquids and calories. all of us need those things at different points. one gel will work for some people, but not everyone. in the same way, mental training helps you figure out what times in the race you need to be fed something to help keep you performing at you best...only its a phrase, or a keyword that can help you get your mind back to where it needs to be. you'll need different thing at points in the race (for example, for me, i realized that my blog title is the perfect grouping of ideas for my race - calm down and focus on form for the swim, cheer up and enjoy the bike being that its the most fun and best skill wise for me, and kick a$$ on the run because the race is almost over and i need to push as hard as i can). |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Timely post, Autumn...I almost posted this same request to Mike Ricci / Ron...how can BT promote a stuctured body of knowledge around mental training? To achieve your tri potential, you need 1) the desire, 2) the knowledge (how-to, plus the training and gear), and 3) obstacles to achieving removed (fear, self doubt, etc). Desire's (1) intrinsic...you have to decide how badly you want it, only you can do that. BT's all about the knowledge and training (2), but we really don't have a structured body of knowledge on how to address (3). BT hits on it anecdotally, and coaches cover this...to a degree...with their proteges...but I think there's a lot of room for further discussion here. As luck would have it, I bought a (different) book that brought me to the same conclusions about mental training this past week... "Unleash the Warrior Within", by Richard J. Machowicz. It's a Navy Seal's take on achieving, dealing with fear, panic, and staying focused on what needs to be achieved, and what you need to do to achieve it. Seriously though, I've had the book and read bits and pieces. My mental challenge starting in March is to get to the boring pool 5x/week starting March 1 to get my IM swim split to 60 minutes. Can't wait for lake swimming to start. |

I plan and plan and try to learn alll that I can about training without really thinking about the "thinking game". Having a guide to honestly look at psychological strengths and weakeness in the triathlon context would be super helpful for me. I'm in! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I read the book about 6 months ago and go back to it a lot. The best part for me was dealing with pain during training. It basically said when training you don't suffer from pain it's more a mild discomfort, cancer patients suffer pain. The other was the list of what makes a Prime Triathelite. Actually, it wasn't until I read that book that I started training with any intent. A very good read.
