Subject: RE: Some depressing numbersThe shelter James and I volunteer at is the Maryland SPCA. It has no affiliation with the ASPCA and does not recieve government funding. It's ALL donations. Once an animal is brought into the shelter, s/he is evaulated for health and temperment. If the animal passes, its put into the adoption program and IS THERE UNTIL ADOPTED (unless the animal does really poorly, and then is sometimes transfered to a rescue/ foster group ). The shelter isn't technically "no kill" because if an animal is too sick or too dangerous to adopt out, s/he is euthanized, but once in the program, the animal is there until it finds its home If you want to go the breeder route, PLEASE BUY FROM A REPUTABLE BREEDER!!! Stay away from "backyard breeders" and pet stores. Responsible breeders love and care about the breed and don't make a ton of money breeding. Backyard breeders/ puppymills just care about profits. And many of those animals end up getting sick becuase of the inbreeding And whichever route you go - SPAY AND NEUTER!!! |
