Pro 6191 | Subject: Which flea preventative for my dog? Found a flea on Duke yesterday, and another one today. I think that means that flea season is back! With a flea preventative, baths, combing and flea treating furniture, we've survived the last two... but what flea treatment are you using that works on your big dogs? We stuck with Adams last season. It seemed to help, but I think there's gotta be something better out there. I'm mainly trying to kill fleas and eggs on him, and prevent them from spreading. Thanks |

Master 1903 Portland, Oregon | Subject: RE: Which flea preventative for my dog? We use Advantage on our corgis (double coat like a shepherd), but as seldom as possible. I just don't like putting poison on the dogs. Our flea season is only August-ish though, so the dogs only get a couple doses maximum per year, and we've been able to skip the past couple of years. We have totally different climates though. I can imagine your flea problem is way worse than mine. You might try some of the ideas mentioned here - might help keep the fleas down so you can reduce the chemicals. Good luck. I hate fleas. |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Which flea preventative for my dog? I use Frontline Plus for my german shepherd; it has always done him well. There is a product -Capstar I think - that you can give that immediately kills the fleas on your dog. It is not a preventative, but if you want to get rid of the fleas now (w/o waiting for the preventative to take over), it is a great product. You can use it and the preventative at the same time. I'm a little bit north of you and haven't seen the fleas come back yet, but with these warm temps I'm sure we will be there shortly. |

New user 153 Columbia | Subject: RE: Which flea preventative for my dog? We used the "Frontline" copycat available at Sams for a fraction of the price (I'm sure Costco and BJs have a similar setup). I think the patent on it ran out, so "generic" vendors are bubbling up. Regardless, I see that you are in Florida. Here in SC, we are told that flea season never ends, and year-round treatment is necessary. This coming from a family friend vet who encouraged us to buy the 3rd party treatment, and didn't make a dime off of our following his advice (i.e., he wasn't just trying to sell something). |

Agree that in some states, including Florida, it is a year round issue. Some months are just less troublesome. |

I don't treat him then, but I still comb regularly. I'll have to look into the generic stuff! |

On top of that, a friend of mine once put it on one of his dogs and the dog then immediately did a shake. Some of the liquid ended up on one of his kitchen cabinets and it actually stripped the paint off! |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Which flea preventative for my dog? DrLeah - 2012-02-08 4:25 PM So firstly, I'm a vet. Don't even get me started on 3rd party crap or 1-800-Pet-Meds. I practice in "lotusland" and we are pretty much the flea capital of Canada. We don't get winter & we don't have an end to our flea season. Also, being in Canada, we have a few differences for what is available. For example, Frontline isn't licensed for use in Canada. We got a license for Program years before it was available in the US. At my clinic, we try to discourage any of the topical products whenever possible. The dogs & cats live in our homes, roll on our carpets, sleep in our beds & are mauled by our children. If it strips the paint of the wall...... just makes me go "hmmmm this can't be good for the humans in the house". We try to encourage products taken internally. What we recommend when we have a client faced with a flea infestation is a combination of Capstar and Program (or Sentinel - particularly if the dog will be in an area where heartworm is a concern, which I think it might be for you). Capstar is the quick-acting flea killing drug. It paralyzes the flea's nervous system, causes them to do the death wiggle and drop off dead, usually starting within 15 minutes. It will only stay in the system for 1-2 days. Because mammals & insects use different neurotransmitters for the nervous system, it doesn't affect mammals in a bad way. If we are combining Capstar with Program/Sentinel then we'll recommend giving a Capstar tablet once/week. Lufenuron (Program/Sentinel) is like a birth control for the flea. Since there are NO products available that will keep the fleas 100% off your pet, won't stop them 100% of the time from biting and won't stop 100% of egg production (no matter WHAT the ads say, nothing like this exists!!!) the idea to control fleas inside the house is to stop them from reproducing. When the flea takes a blood meal & ingests the lufenuron, the product stops the little baby flea from developing the "egg tooth" that lets it hatch out. Larvae in the carpet/bedding/cracks of the hardwood feed on flea poop which also contains the drug, and the larvae can't come out of their cocoon. Stops the reproductive cycle very elegantly. So you'll never be able to say that your dog or cat is 100% flea-free, but at least the reproduction in the house is stopped - and that's 95% of the problem right there. And of course you need to treat ALL the cats/dogs in the house - not just the dog that goes outside!! There are some other tablets like Comfortis & I think there might be a few others that you guys have but they just kill fleas - you still need to use an IGR product (Insect Growth Regulator = birth control). Hope that helps!! Thats interesting information, thanks. So, if I read this correctly, the Sentinel is also a heartworm preventative; so if I switched my dog to it I could drop the heartgard.? |

Buttercup 14334 | Subject: RE: Which flea preventative for my dog? I've been using Advantage Multi for my pup; it treats him for fleas and heartworm. I don't have carpets or kids; pup doesn't sleep on my bed, nor does he rub on my kitchen cabinets, so I don't have the concerns mentioned. I've also used Advantage for Cats on my 3 cats. I find that I don't have to apply it every month; they usually remain flea-free for many, many months after applying it for 3 months. Though my cats are strictly indoor cats, Molly likes to dart out the door on occasion and disappear for a few hours (about a once-a-month ordeal). I went for 2 years without using anything without any problem. When I got the pup, I decided the put the cats back on Advantage since the dog might bring fleas into the house. I haven't applied Advantage on them in about 4 months and they all seem to be flea-free. It probably helps that my entire house has white ceramic tile floors - in the past, I could see right away if there were flea droppings and knew there was a problem. From the website:
Dr. Leah, are either of these ingredients harmful to my dog or cats (cat formula does not contain moxidectin)? |

Champion 14571 the alamo city, Texas | Subject: RE: Which flea preventative for my dog? I use Advantix and have never had a flea show up (when I've used it, story to follow)! I love it. Plus, I'm terrible about the "monthly" application and have taken my dog hiking in the woods, covered in ticks, all of them dead, about 7 weeks after the application. However, in Florida, it is always flea season. My first year there I made the mistake thinking I didn't need flea meds in the "winter" and my house got INFESTED. |
