Subject: So is it worth the extra calories??

I try to avoid eating candy or junk food unless I think the flavor is worth the extra calories so I ask this question before I eat any Christmas goodies.  As I am sitting here eating homeade peanut brittle and white chocolate candies that my co-worker brought my answer to this question would have to be yes!  Next I am moving on to the homeade angelfood candy.

So what holiday treats are worth it for you?

What are those cookies with the hershey kiss in the middle?  Peanut Butter Blossoms perhaps?  Yeah, they're crack and worth every delicious calorie.

english toffee.  Also my wife likes baking Christmas cookies every year.  she has learned that the only ones I like to eat our chocolate chip (I know this really isn't a Christmas cookie).  She has become creative with using different kinds of chips to make them look more festive.  I love them and can't stop eating them!

two of my moms cookie recipes are a must. Eating "right" or not, I eat them. Is it worth it? Heck yeah, it brings back great memories of my mom every time we make them. Otherwise, I like the sweets but am no worse this time of year than usual. Actually, right now I am eating an orange (patting myself on the back)

Mine is "Puppy Chow."  I can't seem to resist the stuff.  One of the other 1st grade teachers on my team brought me a Tupperware container with eight homemade peanut butter cups and two cups of Puppy Chow.  The Puppy Chow was gone before I knew what happened.

Puppy Chow

Here's the recipe from the Chex website.  Enjoy!!

Ingredients
9 cups Corn Chex®, Rice Chex®, Wheat Chex® or Chocolate Chex® cereal (or combination)
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 (1.5) cups powdered sugar

Directions
1. Into large bowl, measure cereal; set aside.
2. In 1-quart microwavable bowl, microwave chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter uncovered on High 1 minute; stir. Microwave about 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in vanilla. Pour mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into 2-gallon resealable food-storage plastic bag.
3. Add powdered sugar. Seal bag; shake until well coated. Spread on waxed paper to cool. Store in airtight container in refrigerator.

For me:
- Starbucks holiday drinks (gingersnap, egg nog, espresso truffle) and pastries (gingerbread, cranberry bar).
- Dairy Queen pumpkin pie blizzard (wonder if it is still available)

Funny I can't think of any savory items..

Ok.  I have now officially eaten too much candy.  I feel a little queasy.  It was still worth it though.

I often confused baklava with balaclava.

Sugar cookies. I love sugar cookies. Thin ones that are crisp and perhaps just a shade too dark at the edges, with sugar sprinkles, not that ghastly paste icing.

And the chocolate cake cookies with chocolate fudge frosting that my mom makes. Mmmmmm.

If something is out on the counter at the office, and it looks appetizing, I take in ....... of course that is all year round, not just at the holidays.  There just happens to be more selections right now!

I had avoided the damn fudge I got from a coworker all last night and all tonight - until I opened this thread! DAMN! Good thing I don't much like fudge, so I won't eat much. Been craving cookies hardcore lately. This is why I resisted the intense urge to bake for the past two weeks.

x3 on the puppy chow (also called muddy buddies). To make them safe for those allergic to nuts, Sunbutter is a perfect substitute. We add coconut, raisins, oats, and other stuff to make them even better. We use them as trail mix, especially in the winter (not so good in the summer). It gets tons of calories in while snowshoeing, which is especially hard for the kids.

BFF is allergic to nuts so I keep my house fairly nut free as well, which means no PB cookies, thank goodness. I have a serious weakness for PB cookies.

In response to the OP, I, too, try to only eat stuff that is worth the calories. If I take a bite and it isn't good, I'll throw it away. Waste is waste whether on my waist or in the waste.

LOL! I don't imagine a balaclava would taste very good... and a baclava probably wouldn't keep you very warm in the winter - just imagine the mess trying to pull one over your head!
