I bike with an ipod (podcasts, not music), one ear only, frequently.  I do so on my long weekend rides if I am riding solo as well as my daily commute to/from work.  Of course, this is for me on my rides and YMMV.

I never do, but if I did I'd do the right ear only.  Here in VA it is legal to listen in one ear on a motorcycle, I suppose it may be the same on a bike.  No different IMO than listening to the radio in your car.  I just get so wrapped up in bike riding I don't need or want anything to listen to.  I do listen to music, podcasts, etc. on the motorcycle from time to time.

It depends.  Where I live, most of my riding is on barely traveled county and township roads.  So yeah, I'll listen to audiobooks, music or whatnot.  If I'm being particularly careful/paranoid that day, I might leave one earbud out.

If I'm in town, or down in Columbus, or on a busy bike path, or whatever, then probably not.  This Sunday I was down in C-bus and went for a ride on the Olentangy Trail.  Between dodging dogs, joggers, oncoming cyclists, and slow cyclists, as well as negotiating the wiggly little trail, I didn't have enough attention left over to listen to anything.

But again, of all the cases of cars hitting cyclists I've read about, not once has it been becuase the cyclist was distracted.  It is almost always the motor vehicle operator that is distracted.

Did you read that article you just posted, or am I not seeing the whole thing? Not once did it say anything about an ipod or it being her fault. In the comments:

this was no accident -- the driver was surfing on his iphone when he killed this girl. the idea that a bike would ride into the path of an oncoming truck is absurd. broad daylight. sun high in the sky. absolutely nothing blocking anybody's view for miles around. and somehow this guy manages to run over and kill a biker.

I wear one when riding alone but not with a group. doesn't seem dangerous to me. I can still hear cars and such...plus I'm pretty sure that if I'm going to get hit by a car I won't hear or see it coming. nor would I be able to escape the path of a car thats going twice as fast as I am.

Reports state she failed to stop at an intersection where she had a stop sign but cross traffic did not. I've not read that the driver was distracted by an iPhone, or that she was wearing earbuds.

That's correct, Sally failed to stop at a stop sign. The intersection is int he form of an "X" as opposed to a "+" so she likely looked back to see if any cars were coming but didn't look back up the road enough and she blew the stop and a car hit her. Driver wasn't cited, it wasn't his fault.

Never have ridden with music.  Don't run with it either. I could say it's because of safety, but honestly I just don't want to.

I do get annoyed if I have to say "on your left" and the person w/ headphones doesn't hear me (whether riding or running).

I ride in very rural areas where I may see half a dozen cars on a one hour ride and I wear an ipod.  But I have 4 simple rules...

1) If I cant hear myself breath, its too loud

2) If I cant hear my pedal crank, its too loud

3) If I cant hear my tires go across the pavement, its too loud

4) if going down hill faster than 27mph I can still hear my ipod, its too loud.

Basically, I keep the volume at the same decibel level as riding down hill at 27+mph (wind noise).  I can still hear cars coming upon me at that speed (and volume).  Nothing to do with pacing, just makes those long hill climbs a little more palatable.

What about those that drive with the windows down and the music blasting?... I will say thats not safe either when you cant hear surrounding auto traffic while driving 2x as fast.

Illegal here (on the road and with earbuds in both ears, anyhow).

Not that people pay attention to that.
