All that matters is how fast you look walking in and out of transition....once the race starts with all the waves jumbled up, no one knows how fast you really are.....

We all make that determination when we see someone walking into transitions with a badass getup

Aero Helmets add to that when they are tucked into your transition bag.

I saw one of my old coworkers at a race this past Sunday.  It was his first triathlon, and I walked to the rack with my tri bike, 404 front, disc covered rear, and my aero helmet on my head.  He chuckled to me and asked me if I was sponsored.  I said no...I'm just a poser...LOL.

FWIW, I got the aero helmet free, used 404, and a disc cover for less than $600.  It's not like I spent $2500 on the wheels and $250 on my helmet.

And remember...just because you do choose to buy faster equipment...it doesn't mean you still can't train hard too.  I hate the argument that people say they "rather" train.  It's not an either or choice.

jsnowash - 2011-08-03 6:35 AM I just spotted a good price on an aero helmet, and am considering purchasing one.... Would I look like a total poser in an aero helmet as a MOP/FMOP (for my AG, not necessarily overall...) rider??

Go for it. It will make you a solid FMOP.

When I race, I aim to have a fast race day setup (aerohelmet, deep front, disc rear, good tires, latex tubes, tight race suit, fast position) so that I go from T1 to T2 as quickly as possible. Despite this, most athletes that swim at my speed are slightly faster cyclists but my plan is to keep them in striking distance for the run (and to keep the fast runners/slow swimmers far enough behind me that they won't catch me).

Why do you say this?

More time out on the course means more overall time saved.  If you do the math for how much time an aero helmet makes for a 4:15 IM bike split versus a 6:30 IM bike split, you'll see that the slower guy saves a lot more time.

Oh wow.  I was going to wait to buy one...but since I'm doing IMFL and will be out there a lot longer, maybe I should reconsider.  Thanks for asking about this....I'm sure a lot of people wanted to know the answer.

I was thinking the same thing.  I'm also a MOPer also heading for Florida.

I once told my wife that I NEVER wanted to look like THAT GUY when we saw a guy with an aero helmet once. I got a screamin' deal on one this year, so now I AM that guy.

Get it.

When I first got into this sport there was a long list of "nevers".

I'm never going to wear spandex in public. That lasted one long bike ride.

OK, I'll wear the shorts, but I'm not going to wear one of those loud and obnoxious compression shirts. That lasted one event.

Ok, I'll wear all the right close but I'm never going to shave my legs and arms. That actually lasted a couple of seasons until my first wipe out. I spent the next month swearing loudly every night as I changed the Band-Aids.

I'll never run without socks, I'll never run through aid stations, I'll never....

The moral of the story is if it's already occurred to you you're going to do it eventually. Might as well give in now and enjoy the benefits sooner rather than later.
