Pre-race routine:

Got up around 6 am and had bagel with peanut butter and half a banana. Lots of traffic on the interstate since many off ramps were closed.
Event warmup:

Ate Jelly Beans and had a little water, used the bathroom and had about 25 minutes to line up in corrals. There were 28 corrals and I was in #2. Stretched just outside of the gates to our corral.

Comments:

I was worried about a hamstring that had caused some problems just before Christmas. I tapered the long runs sooner than I wanted afraid that I might cause more injury. That may have been a problem. Around mile 9 I started to ache around the outside of my right knee (after talking to another runner she thought it might be my IT band???). By mile 12 1/2 I felt like I was almost limping on that side. I had a really hard go of it from mile 9 on. Thanks to my brother who pushed me along and slowed a bit for me.
What would you do differently?:

Not be injured so that I could run and only feel the exhaustion from running rather than pain. I'm not sure I could do anything about that though. We may have started out a little fast??? Our first mile was around 7:30.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and found our parents soon after leaving the runners' area.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Painful right leg.

Event comments:

It was fun. I learned a lot since this was my first half marathon ever. It was great to run in a warm climate given the snow-covered trails I have been running for the last couple of months. Next year I'll come back stronger and a bit faster. 1 hour and 45 minutes in next year's goal and quite attainable as long as I stay strong. Thanks to my wonderful brother Scott who pushed me and helped me finish. It was a great weekend of just hanging out in Arizona.

Becki!  Great race!  Sorry to hear about the knee......it's great that you had Scott there.  That's a cool brother to wait and help you through the tough spots.

1:45 next year...no problem!

Uh...it's gotta be tough getting back here to MN...-9 on Saturday morning...I think I may be running laps on the indoor track.

Welcome back!

Awesome race, Becki! Geez, 1:47 in your first half mary? Pretty darn incredible. You'll be all over that 1:45 next year.

Cheers!

Tom
