Sunny
Total Time = 14h 01m 20s
Overall Rank = 1352/2188
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 205/316
Pre-race routine:

Got up and dopped off special needs bags. Drank a Gu2O and had a bagel w/pnut butter and a banana. Aired up bike tires, lubed up legs w/KY Jelly and put on wet suit.
Event warmup:

Shuffled down to water in mass of people.
Swim
  • 1h 16m 49s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was not prepared for how little actual swimming you can do on the first lap unless you want to go really wide. Spent it trying to find open water to swim in. Second lap the pack had spread out and it was much better.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 11m 57s
Comments:

Thought it went reasonably well running up the helix, picking up the bag, and running into the changing room.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 6h 23m 48s
  • 112 miles
  • 17.51 mile/hr
Comments:

The hills were actually a good break from the wind that developed later in the afternoon.
What would you do differently?:

Try to increase my average speed.
Transition 2
  • 15m 1s
Comments:

Had to sit for awhile in the changing room and drink ice water to cool down after the rising temps on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 5h 53m 45s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 13m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Did 5/1 minute run/walks. Felt so good didn't drink/eat enough on second lap and ran out of gas after finish.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to survive on what they offer instead of using my fuel belt
Post race
Warm down:

laid down in med tent with feet raised after passing out

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fear of pushing too hard and not being able to complete.

Event comments:

Unfortunately due to confusion as to how to accomplish this, I didn't get to cross the finish line with my daughter, which was my number 1 goal.

Yes, a huge congratulations tbill. I can only dream of doing that one day. People like you motivate me to keep training hard. Keep up the great work- don't know what your next goal is, since you just did an IM! But best of luck training and enjoy some turkey today.

WOW! Congratulations on a great race.  My sore muscles from my little 5K yesterday just started to hurt a little less after seeing your race report.  Have a great day today resting up.

This proves that really anyone can do it. After 2 children and business trips out of country I weighed 225 lbs this Jan when I started training. My final race weight was 183. So far, I'm still able to maintain that weight and don't want to go back to where I was. One thing, doing an IM really is a family effort. Without the complete support of your spouse, its impossible, unless you want to get divorced. My week day training was all done either early morning or at lunch, but pretty much every Saturday was all day on the bike. Most of my long runs on Sunday were done in the wee hours of the morning before church, but closer to race time I did do some of the long runs mid day which impacted family time. Pretty much my wife told me I needed to do something about my weight and the IM was really her idea.

Tbilll,
What was your racing background before your IM? How many half IM's and what was your time in those. What was your expected time to finish IMMOO and how close were you to that time? What was the hardest part for you? I totally understand the whole training thing. I get my runs in during lunch and my wife picks up the kids so I can swim before they get home and I ride the trainer after the kids go to sleep, yet I still feel guilty about the weekends. I am out of the house at 5:45 but I'm still not home until noonish and then wiped out for most of the day. Then Sundays are the same, I leave before they wake up and right now my distances aren't that long so I'm home before they get going, but again I'm still wiped out. My wife has been a saint through this but its only going to get harder. I hope she remains supportive.
How did you keep from putting the weight back on? I am finally getting happy with my body, but its taking 15 hours of working out a week to get it this way
Congrats on your finish...What's next?
Tom

thought long and hard about the tattoo. the final straw was that there are guys at the y who have done 2 or 3 ims that don't have a tattoo. a buddy of mine got one after he did 4. i kind of figured after i do 4, then maybe. instead i got the mdot to go on a chain around my neck.

i had done 2 1/2 ims. gulf coast in 2002 with team in training and rock & roll man this past june, which was the 1/2 way point in my training so it was a gauge of how i was doing. one half was 7.25 hrs and the other was 6.5. prior to that i had been doing sprints since around 97. my expected time at moo was 14:15 and i beat that by 14 minutes. since i'm not a runner, that was the hardest part for me. i'm keeping the weight off by still working out most week days. i still get up early and go spinning and run. i'm actually doing a 10 - 12 mile run/walk most friday mornings. i'm still swimming twice a week at lunch. right now the girls have swimming lessons on saturday mornings, so i do that, but once that's over i'll pick back up with my 25 or 50 mile rides. i can do those early and still be ok for the rest of the day. i guess the only thing that has changed since training for moo is i don't do the long 125 mile death march rides on the weekends anymore. probably the next thing for me will be gulf coast in may. i was hoping to get in a marathon before then, but it doesn't look like it'll work out.

Awesome job at IM Moo!  The area up there is georgeous.  I'd love to hear more about your race!  Can you fill in other parts of the RR?  (i.e. T1, T2, each portion SBR, etc.)

Sharon
