I tried that too and was impossible. The pedal wrench is thin enough to fit between th crank and pedal. You can get at your LBS for probably $20 or go to nashbar and get this. |

Veteran 152 Kansas City (Roeland Park) | Subject: RE: Gear heads help! Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey doesn't apply to one of the pedals. Check the instructions, but I think that to loosen the pedal, turn the wrench towards the back wheel. So the right pedal will be lefty-loosey, but the left will need to be turned clockwise. I just had the pedals switched over to my new bike by the LBS because I couldn't get it. They had to use a spare set of handlebars over the allen wrench as a lever because the other LBS that put them on the first time had them on so tight. I would be careful about HTFUing with something that can't talk back. Your legs tell you when they are about to break. Your wrench and gear won't. |

Champion 5117 Brandon, MS | Subject: RE: Gear heads help! rcberto - 2008-02-22 2:01 PMI just bought clipless pedals. I am trying to get the old pedals off the crank arms and can't! Do I need to HTFU or is there some secret to it? The crank arms are Shimano Ultegra and the current pedals are some crappy baskets. I tried to switch pedals that had been on a bike for I don't know how long one time. My collapsible work stand wasn't sturdy enough and I couldn't get near enough umph into it to move the wrench even the slightest. Had to haul it up to the LBS. I think they'd be more than ok with doing a few gratis wrench turns for you. |

Also, some pedals can also be loosened with an Allen wrench. If you are turning it the right way, and the tool fits, could just need more muscle into it. Maybe some WD40? |

Thanks for the super fast response! Just a thought here...take the bike with you. Did you get the pedals at the LBS? Even if not, ask nicely and they might help you out. If possible, watch how the guy does it. If they do help you out, buy some small stuff, maybe even the pedal wrench. |

Thanks fellas. Yeah, I would think they would just do it. All those guys wrenching in the back are all bikers, otherwise they wouldn't be doing it. I don't see why they wouldn't take 30 seconds out to do it for you or lend a tool. I even went to a shop and they let me take one of there extra tools home with me as long as I promised to bring it back. (I do most of my shopping there, so they kind of recognize me) |

My Quattros are allen wrench only. |

My Quattros are allen wrench only.I had to go look to be sure - yep, they are indeed. Since I didn't put them on myself, does the same rule apply with the one pedal needing to be loosened by turning clockwise?

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Gear heads help! I believe so. They do that so the natural pedaling motion keeps them tight. So, if I can invision it in my head (I need to squint a little). It is the LEFT pedal that is counter threaded..... Edited by Aikidoman 2008-02-22 4:22 PM |

Pro 4343 Olney, MD | Subject: RE: Gear heads help! Whether you are using a pedal wrench from the outside of the crank or and allen wrench from the inside of the crank, remember "Back Off": always turn towards the back of the bike to take off the pedal. This does mean that one will always need to go clockwise to loosen. When I bought a pedal wrench I purposely bought one where the handle would easily fit inside a piece of pipe, just in case I needed some extra leverage. I've also found it convenient to remove pedal while my bike was in the trainer, which allowed me to put a wood block under the crank so that it wouldn't turn and I'd be able to push down on the wrench. Yeah, because you are looking at it from the other side. Still, it's always Back Off. I like the 'Back Off' thing - now I'll always remember - and I can add it to the rest of what my wife refers to as "useless knowledge"... hrrmph |

Expert 750 Harrisburg, PA | Subject: RE: Gear heads help! Check with a LBS to make sure you are loosening in the correct direction. I once replaced standard pedals on my old hybrid w/clip pedals. The one pedal came off no problem. The other wouldn't budge. I was slamming the wrench with a hammer and not getting anywhere. Took it to the LBS I got the new pedals from to remove the problem pedal. As I was watching I noticed the mechanic was turning the nut the opposite way I was going. Came off like a charm. He assumed the idiot who assembled the bike must have cross threaded the hardware. I neglected to tell him that the idiot who owns the bike was going the wrong way. Don't ask, don't tell. God, they have great service there. |

I'm pretty sure you didn't need to say a thing gotta love a mechanic who doesn't let on that he knows full well the idiot who owns the bike was wrenching it the wrong way! I know my mechanic has likely had a good laugh after I've brought in my messes for him to fix |
