Subject: Crash and burn Mav, crash and burn!

So I was doing a charity ride yesterday and flying on a downhill when boom, a rock/stick/hole grabs my front wheel and I go head over handlebars landing head first on the side of my helmet and smacking my lower back on the road.  My helmet did its job, but is totally bashed up and cracked down one side.  My bike looks fine and still works, but I am taking it in to the bike shop tomorrow to have it checked over.  My shirt and shorts, bloody and thrashed.  As for me, I was very lucky.  My Garmin clocked me at 30 mph when I crashed, but I managed to walk away with a solid bruise on my lower back and several good examples of road rash, the main cluster being on my back as shown in my profile pic.  Fortunately, the owner of my local bike shop was only a couple of minutes behind and his group stopped to help me off the road and get a sag vehicle.

The ironic thing is that I told my wife last week after a short ride that I had a feeling I was going down sometime soon and needed to shave the legs to ease the cleanup.  She objected then, but I think she has come around to the idea after spending the afternoon yesterday scrubbing and removing the embedded road and grit from my body.

Ouch!  I'm glad that you're essentially okay and hope that your bike is, too.  Interesting that you had that premonition.

My first name is Nick. You didn't have any premonitions about someone named Nick, did you? That's N-i-c-k. Wait! never mind, don't tell me. I don't want to know. Sty is a damnned psychic. Luckily that just resulted in a 'stopped and forgot to unclip' fall. Can't get any more tame than that. Heal soon. We'll say a prayer for the bike

Wow, ummm, errrr, that is quite the pic!  Now quickly go and post that in the men of BT thread in CoJ.

In all seriousness, glad you are ok!

That doesn't sound like it was a whole lot-o-fun.  Hope you heal up quick and the bike is okay!  Isn't it strange when you have a weird premonition like that and it comes true?

At least it was only a flesh wound and not a broken collarbone.

2 types of cyclists:
those that have broken their collarbone, and
those that haven't broken it yet...

Heal up quick.

Ouch!  That really looks painful but I'm glad you weren't seriously injured given the circumstances.  Get that bike checked out and happy helmet shopping.

Lucky and tough, or tough and lucky.

Glad to see you could walk and / or ride away.

I'm running the ING half mary, how you going to be for the full?

Sorry to hear about that.  Early season rides are always a little dicey.

This might give you a little relief and help it heal up a little faster.

Pour sand on them things and let them really show some carnage.

Glad you are ok, but considering the possible outcome at that speed you got away unscathed, and hopefully the bike did too. So now you got a bada$$ avatar pic, and a awesome story.

I crashed a few weeks ago and only got half what you did, but the best part was seeing the crash on my Forerunner 305, first I halted to 20 from 25 real fast, next click I was at 12 as I hit the curb, then stopped dead still.

Take care of yourself, us Georgia boys got to stay healthy.

Glad to hear you walked away with only road rash and bruises. Crashes at those speeds often end up with much, much worse results.

As for the leg shaving, I personally think it's crap when people say it helps with road rash, it's just a right of passage thing. When you scrape the road it generally does a shave job for you and pulls out or just tears off most of the hair in the area anyway. Then all you have to do is a little shave around it to prevent the bandage adhesive from sticking to the surrounding hair.

Thanks for all of the well wishes.  I was very lucky to walk away without breaking anything on this one.  I failed to mention that this was my second fall of the day, the first occuring when I rolled up to the start without realizing I had clipped in, stopped and then down - that was more embarassing than anything else.  I probably should have called it a day then.
