Got up about 530, made sure that karen and I had all our stuff and headed out
Event warmup:

Stood around for freakin' forever waiting on our swim start
Swim
  • 08m 51s
  • 500 meters

Comments:

Felt ok on swim, but started struggling towards the end.
What would you do differently?:

Strap on an outboard motor
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Felt really crappy, took my time at T1 but still had a pretty fast time. Had trouble getting my shoes to lock in outside the mount line
Bike
  • 43m 28s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 17.16 mile/hr
Comments:

As soon as I turned onto Statesville Rd (the first main rd) I knew I was done. I usually climb the first hill at close to 20mph. I was dying and barely holding 10mph. Figured out that my front brake was rubbing some but I knew that physically I didn't have it. Couldn't breath. Got sick twice during the bike because I couldn't keep my throat clear. I nearly turned around at the top of the first hill but decided to stick it out and see how I felt. By the time I got to the end of the bike, I was totatlly done mentally. I'd been sick for the last 10 days before the race and thought I was doing better, but obviously not.
What would you do differently?:

Be well when I showed up at the race.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Decided it was time to call it a day. Dropped at T2 which happened to be right before the monsoon struck. Ridiculously heavy rains and even 2-3 minutes of hail.
Run
  • 00m
  • 3.11 miles
  •  min/mile
Post race
Event comments:

I know I did the right thing by dropping after the bike, but it still pisses me off. After standing around for 30 mins, I could breathe again. I went out with Karen and ran with her (her first ever tri). Her pace was quite a bit slower so I was able to breathe ok and actually felt good which made me even more mad about having to drop earlier.

Hey Eric, for being deathly ill the past 10 days, I am amazed that you even attempted the race!  I am glad you listened to your body and you stopped to make sure you were alright.  Good job on finishing with Karen.  She did an outstanding job!  Glad you made it out and it was really fun to see you on the run.

It takes courage and brains to know when to walk away and be ready for a new day... You were smart to walk away.  I have I have the same sense at some future event...  Emerson

Eric,

Your still a helluva triathlete man and I totally understand that feeling - believe me - when I took the fall on the bike at the corner of Verhoff I was soooo wanting to say screw this!...but..I dropped my sad sack ( as you call it  ) and picked myself up and moved on.  There will be other days and other races - you know what you can do...so...chalk MAP up as an off day, your wife did awesome and the fact you went back and ran it in with her...that's the true sign of an athlete and team player....if I were in your shoes on that day...I would have done the same man...you finished up in the best way...by stickin with the wifey and seeing her through....GyGy did the same for me..even though she wanted to hit the massage tent....she was pissed I beat her time too!!  LOL...she is gonna so kick my A$$ at Latta!!  See you soon at the Y my friend...and Masters....

Well, you got your 'bad race of the season' out of the way first.  Things can only improve from here.   It's done.  Now it's on to WLH!
