Pre-race routine:

Woke up, ate a bowl of oatmeal, made lunch for Karen and breakfast for the kids, fed the horses, laundry, let the horses out, went to church, dropped the girls off at the barn to ride. On my way home I stopped by the race and picked up my packet. Got home, had an Energy Bar, made lunch for MIL and got my clothes and race belt on. FINALLY!!! I need to get to the race to relax!!
Event warmup:

I ran with Matt on his bike for a few miles to get the bowels cleaned out before the race. Did a few strides during the warm-up then chatted with friends at the race before heading over to the start line.

Comments:

After having a very busy morning my mind was not in race mode so I went into the race thinking about the 1/2 mary scheduled next week and finding a pace for that run. Hung around chatting for a while before the gun. The people I was talking with were all planning on breaking an hour for the run so I started behind them. There were a lot of High School XC teams there and man could those kids run!

I went out the first mile in a 6:30 but felt very good. I knew this was a bit faster than I could hold so I backed off a hair. When I did I met up with a girl from out of town that had never run this course before. As i was running with her I got passed by Dirk Elliott, a 20+ yr Ironman veteran. He made a comment when he went by and I told him to have a great run. I ran with the girl for about a mile and a half and warned her of the upcoming hills but told her there is a nice gradual downhill after each and to look forward to that rather than freak out about the hills. :)

I passed the 5K mark in 21:00 and change and was still feeling good. I kept Dirk within sight and just got in a groove. I took a hit of PowerGel at 15 minutes and again at 30 minutes and my legs were feeling great! At mile 4 there was a water station that I grabbed a water and kept on cruising. Dirk had dropped a glove that I picked up and gave back to him. He wasn't too talkative, seemed very focused though. He took off ahead to catch the group he was running with.

Around mile 5 I had a XC coach come up next to me and told me to "get up with that group and work together". So, I did. Holy cow was that nice!! I had never run in a pack before, that felt great! I stayed right on Dirks heels for the next few miles and said hi to everyone we passed and joked with the kids who were cheering from the side of the road. I was really having fun! I noticed that dirk and a couple of the runners had not taken any water the whole race. (Big mistake)

I had another shot of Gel at 45 minutes and got ready for the hill coming up at mile 8. When we came to the hill and I just cruised past about 5 or 6 runners and never looked back. Dirk caught back up to me after the first hill and I told him that there were 70 virgins at the top of the next hill to everyone that dies on the hill. :) Apparently he took it to heart as I didn't see Dirk after I crested the hill until the finish line. It was downhill to the finish line and I just kicked it up a notch and made anyone work for it if they were going to pass me at this point. Noone did! :)
What would you do differently?:

Since I was talking to people on the route and joking with kids I am sure I could have run a bit harder and perhaps taken a minute off my time. This is where I keep reminding myself that I am 42 yrs old and am racing because I love to race and I have fun racing.
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged around a bit, met up with the kids and ate pizza and fruit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing.

Event comments:

This race has been going on for 35 years and is a great course. They give coffee mugs to all the finishers to boot. What a great gift, I still have mine from last years race and it doesn't shrink!! :)

Not bad for a swimmer, LOL. Pretty good pace there Bob!!

I've learned a lot about proper fueling from you and it sounds like you proved its value again!

Great job!

Dagnabbit you sneaky Bob ... I thought you were a swimmer ...

Beautiful, smooth, well-paced race. Sounds like you had a blast, too, and the nutrition/hydration worked out perfectly.

At least you chatted while you were running and not while you were in transition. . . .

I'm proud of you! Laughing
