Greenwood Family YMCA

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 05m 26s
Overall Rank = 19/103
Age Group = F 35-39
Age Group Rank = 1/21
Pre-race routine:

Drank two cups of coffee and ate a clif bar then drove an hour to the race site.
Event warmup:

500 free in the pool, followed by a gel and water, then one more 50 before I had to get out and freeze listening to the pre-race meeting.
Swim
  • 04m 16s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

I knew this was going to be a good swim for me. I felt great in the water, stuck to my 3 stroke breathing and hit all my flip turns. I passed a guy in the water. And ended up with over a lap between us! Never hit any distress and felt like I pushed the right amount. A good start to the race!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

T1 is lumped in with the bike split.
What would you do differently?:

Get used to racing sockless and ask for warmer weather:)
Bike
  • 38m 8s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 19.56 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt slow on the bike. It was just quite cold and windy I felt like I never got comfortable and in the zone. It was one of those days when it hurt to go fast because the air was so cold against me. Not a bad time, just didn't feel as good as normal.
What would you do differently?:

I still don't think I'd want to pull on extra clothes. I thought it about it, but I'm not sure if I would have gotten any benefit.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

T2 I think is lumped in with the run. But my T2 was very slow cuz I couldn't get my helmet unsnapped because of the old frozen "lobster-claw" hands. So maybe both transitions are lumped in with the bike. Not sure, doesn't matter, everyone raced in the same weather :)
What would you do differently?:

Order warmer weather.
Run
  • 23m 2s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

If T2 was lumped in with the run, this might possibly be a PR for me on a 5K. Besides being numb, this was an awesome run for me. I'm tinkled pink. I had good foot turnover and felt really good during the majority of the run. I beat my run split from last year by 22 seconds!
What would you do differently?:

The hills come at the end of this course. I would push harder after cresting them, because the finish line is so close.
Post race
Warm down:

ABout a half mile of easy jogging then I got a massage (my hip felt a tad achy :( ) and showered and changed into warm clothes:)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I believe the weather was the major player in my slower time from last year. I think had weather conditions been identical, this would have been a PR race for me. I felt that good!

Event comments:

Keep in mind, my overall placement is against Men AND Women. I won First Place Overall Female(for the second year :) )!!!
This is a small race, but I love it. It is the one that started it all for me back in 2004. I always try to race it every year because it was my very first triathlon. I am so happy about the improvements in my run. And I know as the season progresses I will get faster and faster. Very pleased with my performance considering the weather and the fact that this was a tiring week for me. I'm a very happy. Today is my daughter's 7th birthday. The whole time on the run course I was thinking that this year was so much more fun than seven years ago and a lot less painful;)

Congratulations on a great race and your 1st place finish!!!  That is awesome!

It's always a little harder in the cold.  It seems like things don't work quite right in the cold - like helmet straps.  Good job on sticking through it.

A whole lot less painful then 7 yrs ago.  Funny, but true I guess.  Great job out there today - especially in the cold.

AWESOME JOB PAM! You are soooo fast. I can't believe your swim time.  1:25/100 ? GEEZ! You are a maniac!

Around Festival you are going to start wishing you hadn't asked for warmer weather.

Take care of that hip and quit polishing that trophy. Well, ok, polish away!

You nailed the race! Congrats on first female again.

Sweet memories of 7 years before and going back to the tri that started it all for you.

I look forward to watching your progress this season as you are going to do awesome!
