Overall Rank = 285/450
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 10/25
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:30 for a little breakfast - PB on wheat and a banana, of course. Got to Carmel HS around 7:30. Set up my transition area then waited around for what seemed like FOREVER for the event to actually start.
Event warmup:

Quick jog to get the heart pumping and to wake up the brain. Ended up being a fairly useless warmup. It was almost an hour before I actually got to start my swim.
Swim
  • 08m 24s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt horrible for pretty much the entire swim. I actually had trouble breathing for the first 100m. They put a swimmer in the water approximately every 5 seconds. This amounted to an almost half hour wait before my start. I actually had time to have an engaging chat with the gal in line behind me. Making friends on the pool deck. That's how I roll!
Anyhow, I think the longer I stood around waiting to get in the pool the more nervous I got. First 100m tried to catch my breath. 200m I thought to myself, "Triathlon is stupid. Why in the world did I sign up for this. Never doing one of these again!" Then I managed to get my wits back about me and things were a little better for the rest of the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Breathe! Relax!
Transition 1
  • 03m 36s
Comments:

It was a long run from the pool, out of the building, through the parking lot, and finally to where my bike was racked. I had tiny pieces of asphalt stuck to my feet so I spent a little extra time cleaning up before putting on shoes and socks.
Bike
  • 36m 49s
  • 10 miles
  • 16.30 mile/hr
Comments:

It really wasn't very warm out today. I decided to go without my jacket and I was pretty chilly for the first part of the ride. I had a good ride - turns out I'm not so slow on the bike when I don't have to stop for stop lights and traffic! I did a little bike shopping on the route, making note of all the cool bikes the speedsters that were passing me were riding.
What would you do differently?:

I definately need to spend more time in the saddle...and a new bike. Cause new bikes are faster than old bikes!
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

I don't have clipless pedals. I was riding in my running shoes. So T2 was just getting my bike racked, helmet off, and finding my way back out of the transition area
Run
  • 27m 21s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Took awhile to get my legs but I was nice and warmed up. I just followed the dude in front of me and chugged along to the finish. Nice downhill at the end of the course so I got a little help from gravity in terms of kicking it into a higher gear for the big finish.
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged/walked until the heart rate returned to normal then it was straight for the grub!

Event comments:

The event was well run - tons of volunteers pointing the way and directing traffic. I'll definitely be doing this race again next year!

Great job!!! I felt the same way in the swim and I have been doing tris for several years. Maybe we had to much time to think waiting in line. It was my first tri in a pool. May not do that again.

But I thought the overall atmosphere was great!!!

Keep in touch

Good job Emily,

You were so focused on your bike. I hollard (sp) at you at the top of my lungs but you were focused. I guess we are officially Triathletes now. How weird is that.

Congrats on a good race. That definitely was a long wait for the swim start. I was glad that there was only one collision, that I saw at least, in the pool. And you could definitely do some bike shopping out there, I saw several bikes that just made me drool.
