Pre-race routine:

Had oatmeal and an apple. I had all my things laid out, did my hair, put on sunscreen, yanti helped with this thank you!, shoes on, out the door.
Event warmup:

Not much of one. Rode from the car to transition, set up my stuff and stretched a wee bit. Mostly just hung around and waited for my wave to start in an hour or so. Chatted with Yanti and Faeron who came with me this weekend. I loved it that they came - I can't tell you how nice it was to have them there and then Yanti was an awesome awesome sherpa. I think everyone should have one just like her! :)
Swim
  • 38h 29m
  • 1640 yards
  • 2h 20m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

I couldn't breathe for the first part of the swim. I absolutely wanted to quit. The wetsuit was choking me and I was really freaking out. I did this freaked out horizontal side stroke (is that possible?) all the way out to the first buoy at which time I decided to f@#k this wetsuit and took it off to my waist. Too bad about the drag - I wasn't going anywhere with what I was doing up to that point. This was an excellent idea and as soon as I did that I was able to swim and actually picked off and passed about 4 red swim caps from my wave ahead of me. It felt good. Sighting was good even with the dilemma at the beginning - made it to the buoys and around no problems. Overall happy with the swim.
What would you do differently?:

NO WETSUIT! Anyone wanna buy a wetsuit?
Transition 1
  • 04m 40s
Comments:

Fast transition for me seemed to go smoothly. I don't know what I did for almost 5 minutes - probably complained to Yanti about the damn wetsuit. :)
Bike
  • 1h 30m 53s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 16.41 mile/hr
Comments:

Check me out! Woo hoo 16.41 mph average for the whole ride. My legs are feeling it (inner thighs mostly) but I am happy with this. Its a huge improvement for me. At the start of the ride, I was again out of breath and heartrate was soaring. Took about 4 miles to really settle down and ride. It seems this not-being-able-to-breath thing is a raceday start of the leg occurrence...it happened again on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe not have gone out so hard at the start as I kind of pooped out at the end.
Transition 2
  • 03m 37s
Comments:

Even better transition for me. Went smoothly I think shoes on, gu in pocket off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, well remember to take my hat out of the bag. Luckily Yanti was there and gave me hers.
Run
  • 1h 26m 39s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 13m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

Again with the breathing and heartrate off the chart - as soon as I was out of transition and on my way I had to walk. I mostly did a 1:30/1:30 pace the first two miles but kept moving. Settled down eventually and had a decent run. I felt good the rest of the time and finished strong.
What would you do differently?:

CALM DOWN (for pete's sake!)
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit. Yanti had a recovery drink ready to go for me which helped a lot. Got my stuff together and rode back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not breathing maybe, ya think? Overall, it was a great race for me and I felt good.

Event comments:

A good race overall, very well organized.

Great job!

Hope you give the wetsuit another try...I've been skeptical, but I finally drank the Kool-Aid this weekend and--esp. over the 3/4 mile distance--it was a help for me. Don't know if fit is an issue with it...I had to exchange mine...first one just made me struggle with my stroke...after the swap, I was much happier.

Some day, we'll have to actually meet at one of these races: Quite sure I saw you and Yanti walk down to the water at the practice swim on Saturday (my wife and I were lounging on a picnic blanket on the grass), then again on Sunday I assume I was seeing you and Yanti and Faeron at what was left of the LA Tri booth at the end of the day...when--yet again--Liz and I were lounging, cashed after the race--on the ground some distance away.

Yeah, those darn wetsuits sure can feel like a straight jacket after swimming free and easy without one for a while. Definitely takes some getting used to. that is very cool that you were able to swim with it peeled down and actually pass people

Sounds like even though you were a bit gassed at the beginning of the bike, you really cranked it out there on the course. (I bet you smoked a lot of those people who were passing you earlier in the swim)

The oly distance is cool because the run is long enough to get stretched out and relax out of T2. (And still crank out a few comfortable miles) Seems like with a sprint that point never comes because the run is too short.

Very nicely done out there Dolores

Oh, and I bet Yanti makes a great Sherpa but I think she learned a lot of it from you

Yes, that was us over by the tri club booth! You should have given a shout we'd have walked over and crashed out too probably.   Yes, we will have to meet up one of these days....

Dolores rocked the Desert!!!

You were so strong and smooth out there. I admire so much your NeverEverQuit Attitude ... what a shyty start and yet you just figured out a way, kept going, and pounded out an awesome race.

Yep, if I could only be half the Sherpa you are ...

Oh, and here are my favorite action shots of you ... don't kill me ...

Sorry about the trouble with the wetsuit. I agree that you should give it another try, though if I had been choking me I would probably have stripped too. Great conditions!! Congrats on your finish!!

Congrats on the race Dolores. I think your swim time is pretty impressive considering you drug a wetsuit along with you. That does't sound that much fun! I wish I could have joined you out there. Perhaps next time! Keep up the great work.

Leave it to Yanti to get a picture of you coming out the porta-john! I love it! That's just one of those triathlon moments that we've all had that is so rarely caught on film!

Great race and report. Glad to see you stuck out the swim. I hope you get used to the wetsuit. I struggled but eventually did. You ROCKED that bike. Awesome job, girl!

Grats on a great race, Dolores, despite the snafu with the wetsuit!  Pretty sweet that you could pass some folks even with all that drag!
