Ironhead

Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 16m 2s
Overall Rank = 27/283
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 3/23
Pre-race routine:

On the drive to the event site, I ate a Cliff bar, milk and coffee and a GU gel.
Event warmup:

Ran for about 10 minutes then swam about 300 meters in the pool
Swim
  • 04m 59s
  • 274 meters
  • 01m 49s / 100 meters
Comments:

Slurpped down a GU 20 minutes before the start. TT start every 10 seconds. The starter did a good job holding up on the starts if the swimmers were backing up in the lanes. She held the guy 3 spots in front me which meant we had clear lanes. I passed the guy in front me. This was a good comfortable swim. Probably should have gone harder.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster...it's a sprint.
Transition 1
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

2/23 & 30/283. Decent transition - helmet on, sun glasses on, race belton, ran with the bike to the mount line. Headed out and got into my shoes fairly quickly. Hadn't practiced getting into my shoes since last season.
What would you do differently?:

OK T1. I racked on the right of the racks because I thought we could run down either side of the racks. When I got to my bike, there were volunteers not letting us run on the right side. Not sure why. It didn't make any sense to me. Cost me a few seconds in T1.
Bike
  • 45m 31s
  • 15.3 miles
  • 20.17 mile/hr
Comments:

The weather was rainy, cold and windy; a pretty miserable morning. Headed out in my new Team Zoot/GU gear. The first mile or so was cold. After that I warmed up and wasn't cold.

The slick roads really slowed me down in the corners. I took all the corners very cautionously. I didn't want to go down in this race. I liked this bike course. I wish the weather would have been better so I could ride it hard and not worry about the slick roads. Passed lots of people.

No nutrition on the bike. Didn't need it.
What would you do differently?:

Bike faster...it's a sprint.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Quick T2. Flying dismount. Glasses into my mouth. Helmet unbuckled. Ran with the bike. Racked. Helmet off. Hat on. Glasses on. Then struggled with my shoes. My feet were numb from the cold. I couldn't feel them. I didn't wear socks.
What would you do differently?:

Go to one knee to get shoes on.
Run
  • 23m 1s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

In T2 I heard someone say "Go Craig". I looked up and saw John (jcagg90) cheering Craig (docshock1964)on. Craig had just left T2. I headed out about 20 seconds behind him. So, now I had my rabbit. The first half mile was wierd because I couldn't feel my feet. I kept my eye on Craig and made my goal to catch him.

I just ran as hard as I could. Looked at my HR a few times to make sure I was at LTHR. I was.

Never could make up any time on Craig. He slowly pulled away. I ran the last mile pretty much full out, puke a lung intensity.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster...it's a sprint.
Post race
Warm down:

None. Stood around and froze my azz off. There were a bunch of BT'ers at this race - jcagg90, docshock1964, jah2212, teechris, davidb, kend (who vonlunteered, thanks) and others. Always great to see these guys and gals.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Rain and cold. Not training for sprint distance. No speed training.

Event comments:

Ironhead always puts on decent races. They are consistently OK. There was lots of food - bannanas, oranges, pizza, spaghetti, coffee, honey buns. The Kawanias are the owners of the race. They did a great job with the vonlunteer part of the event.

For god's sake man, it's a sprint!!! LOL. That should be my mantra since all I'm doing this year are sprints. The bike leg sounded annoying and you did an excellent job working through the weather. Nice race. Well done.

Nice job Tommy.

I'm going to steal one of your comments for myself.  I need a new Mantra......"Go harder, its a Sprint"

Must have seemed like it was over as fast as it started.

It was nice meeting you yesterday Tommy!  Great race coming off IMAZ.  Thanks for the tips on the IM races you've done.  Maybe someday for us...

Hope to see you around and maybe on some weekend Frisco rides

Great race - congratulations on 3rd in AG!  I agree with you about the transition area (small)  and how you only could go one way!

Your swim was super fast!  Great run - it is fun to have a "rabbit"!
