Laurent Jalabert ex pro cycler and major force in the Tour de France competed in Kona last year and finished in something like 9:10 ish, which is very respectable.  Yes, he's not LA, but he still qualified somehow, somewhere!!

Yes, LA is or was clearly the best in his sport by far etc... but to a common man who is a fellow cancer survivor and puts in the miles, watches his nutrition, juggles training with family, work and friends, budgets for gear, training camps and races, I believe that even LA has to qualify for Kona just like the rest of us.  Even the great LA wasn't given 7 Tour de France wins...

(P.S.: Like millions of others LA has been an inspriation to me too!)

jneugeba - 2008-04-29 12:05 AM Don't you think that if he was going to do it, he would "test the waters" a bit...

He didn't test the waters with 10Ks or half-marathons before he started running marathons.

FYI, the elite's start with the first wave, so of course he was in the first wave.  The fact that he was given an elite number is what pizzed a lot of people off ....... not a number in the 1,000's, but an elite number.  No one is criticizing his performance, it was a solid one even if not up to his potential.

And he was NOT the greatest in the sport, he was the best of his generation in the Tour.  But let's not start that debate again ..........

If the sponsors at Kona want big media coverage they have all the right in the world to give LA an exemption. Did he earn it, well, maybe he did by excelling in his sport. I guarantee you if Michael Jordan wanted to compete at Kona, they would put him in.

As for respecting the sports, putting in his time, etc., that argument sounds a bit like jealousy. I would love to see him race Kona, and I bet he would lay down some pretty good times.

For the rest of us, we have to earn it the "hard" way, but I also would say that winning 7 tours was pretty hard...oh yeah, in a row! (not to start that debate again )

Don't you think that if he was going to do it, he would "test the waters" a bit with a sprint or olympic first, or heck, even a half IM? I mean, he hasn't done a tri since he was like 17. He has said over and over that he hasn't had the time to train properly for a marathon, how does he expect to train properly for an IM? I call total BS on this rumor.

I can't see LA "testing the water" with a sprint or oly. Can you imagine LA showing up for a Sprint triathlon?

LA would show up for 5k's in Austin when I was living there just after he retired. While he was winning TdF's he also did a couple Muddy Buddy's. I would not be surprised to see him enter a tri in Austin to test the waters...and to have fun.

I live just south of Austin (New Braunfels) and have done the muddy buddy and a few of those 5ks but unfortunately never ran into him. I would love seeing him going through that mud pit...
