Age Group Rank = 2/5
Pre-race routine:

This race is about a 1.5 hour drive from my house. Got up at around 3:30, had some coffee and breakfast (english muffin w/ peanut butter & honey & a banana). I also ate a clif bar on the drive to the race, since 3:30 - 8:00 is a long time to go without food before a race!

The rain was coming down during almost the entire drive, but not hard. By the time I reached the race site, it had pretty much stopped except for very light drizzle. Halleluia! I was NOT looking forward to racing in the rain!
Event warmup:

I was a little later getting to the site than I had hoped, so I didn't have time for much of a warm-up this time around.
Swim
  • 17m 18s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt like this was a pretty good swim for me. The water was a little on the cold side, but not too bad. Took a few minutes to really settle in. I got a little drafting action early on, but lost those feet and never really found any others to latch onto.

Official race results lists my pace as 1:44, so I'm not sure if distance is correct??
What would you do differently?:

Better drafting.
Transition 1
  • 04m 30s
Comments:

I just took my good old time in this transition! Sheesh! This was a "C" race for me, and with the weather the way it was, I had decided I didn't care that much about overall time, but was more interested in split times. I kinda got stuck in my wetsuit getting out! Not my legs but my arms! Pretty bizarre, never had that happen before! I took a little time to dry off and threw on a pair of tights over my shorts and a long sleeve jersey over my top. Long slog through the sand to the bike mount.
What would you do differently?:

Lube my arms better so my friggin' wetsuit doesn't get stuck! I definitely could have moved faster here, but like I said, for this race I didn't really care that much about taking the extra transition time to get comfortable.
Bike
  • 1h 37m 1s
  • 29 miles
  • 17.94 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt great on the way out. Past lots of people. It was fun passing both men & women much younger than me! After about 1/4 of the way back, I noticed the wind picking up, and we were riding into the wind pretty much the rest of the way back. My speed really fell off, and I was definitely loosing steam by the time I got back. I was also experiencing some saddle discomfort. I did just about the entire ride in aero position. Most of the riding around my home is rolling hills, so I'm in and out of aero, sometimes out of the saddle, etc., so I'm not used to being in aero position continuously for that long. Experienced some -- uhhh -- soft tissue discomfort, which was also slowing me down there at the end, I think.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. I was very happy with the first half of the bike, but disappointed in my overall pace. Thought I could've done better...
Transition 2
  • 02m 47s
Comments:

Again, kinda took my time. Peeled off the jersey & tights. Running shoes didn't have quick tie laces, so had to tie them. Again, not too concerned with T times today...
What would you do differently?:

Could've moved more quickly...
Run
  • 39m 29s
  • 4.2 miles
  • 09m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

A little disappointed in my run. I just sort of settled in and ran at a "comfortable" pace rather than trying to kick it up a notch. I just didn't seem to have the desire to dig it out.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder on the run. I know I can do it, but I wimp out and settle into a comfy pace.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around, packing up gear, some food and drinks, a little stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Slow transitions, no taper for this race.

Event comments:

This is a nice, well-run race. I enjoyed it and would do it again. It would be nice to move the transition area out of the sand if possible....

Wise moves all around to be warm and take your time in transition as sand added interesting dynamic to the transition.

It was great to meet you and always cool to get hardware!

Race results have swim .6 and run 4.2 which is why paces are off. I did BT tracker of the lake and it is probably really .5 at the most based on lake size.

Great train through race and hope it sets you up well for your A race coming up!

Hardware rocks!
