Pre-race routine:

Up at 4 am so Chris could chauffer me to the race...it was freakin' pouring the rain, so I was not a happy camper :) Ate a PB/banana/honey sandwich on the way down to Wartrace.

Rain tapered off by the race start, which rocked! Got very humid out there due to the rain, and then the sun came out and made it blazing hot on the roads
Event warmup:

Ran to the bathroom and back, sat in the car to stay warm and dry
Run
  • 7h 30m 5s
  • 41.2 miles
  • 10m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

It rocked! I went my pace, never got too tired, am not sore today...and overall, I am finally really pleased with a race :) Yay!

Nutrition:
Accelerade (orange w/caffeine) in my handheld bottle--drank throughout race
One Accel gel every hour
6 Bit-o-Honeys (wanted to eat more but got tired of them after the third hour)
Orange slices at miles 20, 30, and 35
4 oz of Coke at mile 20 and 30
What would you do differently?:

Eat more from miles 25-40...have Chris bring ice rags to help me keep cool (definitely a requirement for Western States)
Post race
Warm down:

Hopped in an ice cold fountain and sat down to make my legs happy :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Needed a little more food, especially past mile 25 or so.

Event comments:

Drink stations were plastic water jugs (no cups) on the side of the road every two miles--very old-school and awesome!

There were 4 aid stations on the course, but they were very poorly stocked (oranges not peeled), no variety of food, etc.

Performance: Good
Took my splits every five miles: First 5 miles: 52:50 Second 5 miles: 50:58 Thrid 5 miles: 51:50 Fourth 5 miles: 52:38 Fifth 5 miles: 53:41 Sixth 5 miles: 53:54 Seventh 5 miles: 58:25 (hit "The Walls" at this point...it sucked! I walked 2.5 miles of this 5 miles) Last 10K: 1:15:41 (definitely ran out of steam at this point, I stopped eating a little too early and it was insanely hot running on the highway, so I did a lot of walking)
Course: Very hilly road course. One hill was 3/4 mile long with 20% incline (yes, I almost died) :) Gorgeous horse country so I just took my time and enjoy the peace and quiet of rural TN.
