Subject: I don't care anymore about "aero"

Ok, I started this sport and rode an old ('80's) road bike. Then, I got an old ('90's) tri bike. I didn't much care about being the most aero. I didn't have much of an aggressive position, didn't have an aero fork, and even rode with two water bottles on the frame. I didn't care, I always knew I was what was holding me back.

Now, I got a new (Javelin) tri bike. I sold my old one and left the bottle cages. I started looking around and decided I'd go with one of those fancy dual-chambered "aero" bottles and get one cage for the seat tube. Of course, during my research, I came across a post (on the other formum) from John Cobb:

With out getting into the specifics of a brand by brand of frame, discussion, a front Profile bottle is generally a good choice. The length of the straw will matter and it should be as short as is useable. Having those dual straws or a very long front straw can cause more drag than a good front wheel can save.

I think I'm still going with a dual-strawed Profile AquaCell, but next time I want a brain freeze, I'm just going to chew a glass of ice.

HEHE!

And to think I've been looking at behind the seat bottle cages, and an aero seat post.  Not to make me go faster, but because I can (:

Enjoy the new Javelin man... They are some sexxy bikes.

I just tape a 40oz Big Gulp to my aerobars. How's that for drag?

If a STRAW can have that much effect on my time...

I think the best way for me to get more aero - to find a way to ride my bike without me physically on it. The drag caused by my person is MUCH greater than that of a straw.  Or is it?  LMAO

So if you have a bottle with a BIG straw all, what all 1cm / 1/2 inch ish (width) of it, on your aerobars, then you can stay in the aero position whilst drinking.

Now, if you have the bottles behind you on the back of your saddle, then you have to come out of the aero position take the bottle, drink from it and then put it back...

 See what I'm getting at?

Let the big debate begin... Laughing

...or its not adding that much drag. It was comparing it to the reduction of a good aero front wheel. Overall, the wheels are minor compared with the total drag. The thing is, it all adds up.

For me... I run an aero drink with a short straw. It hurts my neck to drink from it, but damn Im aero

i just ride with my hands behind my back, so they don't add any extra area to create new drag. .. . what if you just made an aero "chamber" that covered the whole front of your body to make it streamlined?

An aero helmet with visor that covers your whole face....  No, I've got it... the Graeme Obree bike, that's what you need, then you'll be super duper aeror, with whole body/bike casing etc...

Yes, this is my point. I believe an aero front wheel is in the top few of the list as to the largest tri-bike "bolt-on" aero benefits around. To think that having 2 straws or 1 long one on an otherwise aero bottle completely negates that benefit baffles me.

I'm still going to attempt to be aero-conscious, but I'm certainly not going to spend much money to get it.

I think you just nailed it , if you have to spend $800 for a front wheel that the aero savings can be offset by a straw is it worth it?

The sum of aero wheels, helmets, frames and so on is helpful, but there is a price I am willing to spend knowing that I can train more and do more good for a lot less money.

Alot of aero stuff is a lot of hype

clearly, what they should make is a straw that is teardrop shaped - like the cervelo seat tubes. silly bottle designers!

I tried the aero bottle between the aero bars but just did not like it.  I just keep a water bottle in my downtube cage.  In longer tri's, I grab bottle of water or gatorade on the fly and put them in my back jersey pocket.

OK, that's it...  We really need a aerodynamic carbon fiber straw cover.  I can't believe they missed this one.  I'll call Profile today and it get it going.

Oh yeah...  Lets, just for now, forget about the giant parachute sitting on the bike

My acessories may not be aero, but my bike is RED, so the speed loss on non-areo components is somewhat offset

Showoff! If RED is so fast, why isn't your new commuter bike RED?

Because she obviously is in no hurry to get to work.. just like the rest of us.

hehe, this is a really funny thread.  To think that people make such minute details a big deal makes me laugh.  I could just lose 20 lbs.  That would be a good start.  For someone like me, spending money on anything "aero" would be nothing more than a placebo.  I'm still the same ol Clyde.

...But I could be a fancy Clyde.
