Galena, Illinois
United States
65F / 18C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 43m 57s
Overall Rank = 100/800
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 15/90
Pre-race routine:

Setup T2 and took the shuttle to the lake, a VERY small swim and quick ride to get loose.
Swim
  • 09m 7s
  • 660 yards
  • 01m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

Can't complain with the swim time. 68/800 so I raced my strength. The water was cold as per usual. Two guys gapped me but I finished third in the wave as my spotter (HI!) let me know. I didn't hear her but had a pretty good idea.
What would you do differently?:

Try to bridge up to the two leaders. I had plenty of gas in the tank to make the bridge.
Transition 1
  • 03m 15s
Comments:

The swim time ended at the water this year, instead of the entrance to T1. So the time includes a nice 150 yds or so run. I had flip flops out for running on gravel but snapped the thong part of the flip flop so ran through t1 with one shoe.
What would you do differently?:

not break my flip flops
Bike
  • 58m 48s
  • 16.8 miles
  • 17.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Finished a little faster than last year, in much tougher conditions. The wind was a head wind for the most part with some cross winds. The wind was moving the disc/tri spoke all over the road on the decents which was scary. Got passed a couple of times which annoyed me.
What would you do differently?:

work the last two miles more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Didn't have the greatest rack space but a pretty smooth transition
What would you do differently?:

Put speed laces on the ronins
Run
  • 31m 31s
  • 4.3 miles
  • 07m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Worked the first half of the course but saved some mojo for after the turnaround. Hi fived pinkcrush with a mile to go. Ran abotu 90 secs faster per mile this year, just kept pushing.
Post race
Warm down:

hung out with the tri club

What limited your ability to perform faster:

WIND WIND and WIND

Event comments:

My third time racing Galena. Great Course and event. 2:01 first year, 1:51 last year, and 1:43 this year.

Hi!

Nice job out there. Simpson said the wind was a steady cross, actually, so I'm glad you and Bee didn't get lifted off the road like a kite. Thanks for hi-fiving me on the run --that hill was brutal.

You smoked the swim and run, and would have done the same on the bike if it weren't so windy...

Congrats on some awesome improvement!
