Subject: End of IM training week 12
Holy Crap! I am halfway done. It is so hard to believe in 12 weeks I will be racing (participating) in an IM. I am not ready.

Week 12 was a swim week for me which worked out well because it rained all week.
I was supposed to do a duathalon and a 3 hour ride on Sat but it got rained out, so all my bike workouts for the week were on the trainer. I had 3 rides for 4 hours. My wife let me do my 2 hour ride in the den this week so I played with my Playstation while riding. I figured since it is raining and this was my swim week I don't need to do intervals for 2 hours...right?

I got in 3 of my 4 swims this week for 7600 yards. I blew off one swim because of the rain. Not because I didn't want to swim in the rain but because usually I am the only person in the pool in the evenings and the lifegaurds can't leave until I'm done. I didn't want the lifegaurd to stand in that rain while I swam. It was pouring rain and If someone else would have been there I would have swam, I promise

I was able to get in all of my runs. I had two 5 mile runs during the week, but on Sunday I had a 10 mile run scheduled. I was all prepared to run in the rain but it was pouring (I'm a bit of a weather wussie). So I went to the gym but they didn't open for 2 hours so I decided to skip the run for Sunday. It was only 10 miles (did I actually say Only). Well, I was sitting at home watching the football game and checking out BT when I read my coach's inspire me, where he said he ran 14 miles, 5 of which were in the rain . I looked outside, it was clear so I went for a 6 mile run. I couldn't handle the guilt. So for the week I ran 15.5 miles for 2 hours and 39 min.

As I read what I type I realized that on one hand I'm saying that I'm not ready, but I also blew off alot of workouts this week. This is a bad habit that I fall into. I can't let it continue.

This week starts the next build period for me. I thought I was going to start from scratch but I got my schedule for the week and it should kill me! This is a run focus week for me. I will get in 2 swims and 2 trainer rides with hopefully one 50 mile ride on Saturday. I have 4 runs of 5 miles each during the week with my long run of 18 miles! I thought I was going to ease into theses long runs, but I guess not. Now I wish I had done that 10 miler yesterday

On a lighter note, my wife and I joined the YMCA last week. I knew I would use the gym if for nothing else just for the pool, but I wasn't sure about my wife. On Thursday I cut my swim a little short so I could get home so she could go to a yoga class. She loved it. It was an hour and a half (she thought it was going to be a half an hour) and she couldn't stop talking about it. She went to the gym yesterday to walk on the treadmill. She walked for a half an hour and was pooped. I said "come on, you can walk around the mall for hours, 30 min shouldn't wear you out" I think she is going back again tonight. You have no idea how happy this makes me. We used to play hockey together but after the kids were born, she quit. When she played, she was so happy. The kids make her happy, but I know she likes to workout as well. I just didn't want to pressure her do do something and Tris are out of the question. So hopefully she will enjoy the yoga and running thing

As always keep the encouragement coming, don't let me flake this week and thanks for reading.
Tom

You know that you're an ironman when you make this statement...."It was only 10 miles"

Nice job Tom.  Another week in the books!  I hope that the weather holds out for you to have a great week 13.

It's okay to blow off a workout here and there...  The important thing is to have your body ready for the long sessions and to actually do them.

I have one brother who ran the Houston Marathon years and years ago.  He had a real tough time doing so, because he did not adequately respect the race.  See, he's a runner (like me) and he would run for a hour here and there and maybe he did a long run of 12 to 15 miles before the race.  Another brother asked him, just after I announced my plans for IMAZ, if he wished he'd have swum for a couple of miles and ridden a century before starting the marathon, ha, ha.  My point is that I think there are a lot of people who enter and race in a marathon without really respecting the race.  They have some pain, but finish.  However, the consequences are much more dire for doing so in an Ironman.  I think that more Ironman entrants know this and prepare accordingly.  I don't mean to say that you aren't gonna be prepared... I just want to maintain some accountability here and ensure that you (and I) have a great race on 9-Apr...

You have worked hard for three months.  Just another three to go and we'll be there.

Way to go Tom, this weather really has sucked. What has it been, three weeks of rain and then two weeks of wind before that? I feel you, the trainer doesn't compare to being outside. Stay positive. w00t!

Halfway there Tom. Does that mean you're on the wet or dry end of the plunger?? No matter, keep up the great work, don't let your attitude slack off and we'll be here to keep nudging you along. I would think that if you already think that it's only a 10 mile run, you've got to be getting close to ready, at least with regard to your perceptions. Keep your chin up, do your training, trust your training and believe in yourself. You'll get there.

Also, glad to hear that things have worked out for your family enjoying the gym. That's great that your wife has found a new love in yoga.

Keep up the training tom. The weather here in san diego has been terrible the past few weeks, so it's great that you've gotten in any training. It's supposed to clear up by wednesday. Yay sunshine!

I appreciate your honesty. Not too smart to JUMP right to 18 miles on the run though. What kind of program are you on that goes from a 10mile run to an 18mile run in one week? Weather can be a bummer (it has been non-stop raining in So. Cal. for a week!). I'm no hero, but Sunday, it was pouring rain all day. I went out for my 11 mile run, and decided to love the rain and wind, and you know what, I felt great the whole way! If those guys in Minnesota and Wisconsin can run when it is below zero, then, we should not have too many excuses. Go get em!

Good job Tom.  Sounds like your well on your way to being an Ironman!

Good luck with the long 18 mile run this week.  Oh, if it's raining, cold and windy that day, just remember the motto...rain, hail or shine!!

Larry,
I'm not exactly jumping from 10 to 18. I have been up to 16 earlier in my training. From what I can tell from my coach, I do a long run about every 3 weeks or so then I go back to a little shorter runs. A few weeks ago I had a 14 miler then some 10 milers. I expect to go to 12 miles for the short runs then a 20 in a few weeks. You are right, if people back east can run in the cold then I have no excuses. Of course I can say that now that the rain has stopped

Haven't you heard of the 80% Rule?
