Pre-race routine:

set my stuff up. Talked to a guy who ran the Chicago 50k with me.
Event warmup:

your suppose to warm up?
Swim
  • 49m 71s
  • 2100 yards
  • 02m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

I kept running into troubles. Not used to swimming in OWS and my wetsuit. First time for both this year. I started out and kept over running into people. There was alot of fighting and ulimately I think it slowed me down. I just could not get into my rythem. Drafting was bad. whenever I would get behind someone I swear they would stop and look. My googles were foggy and it was hard to see.

There was a section I acutally had to get up and run because the water was so shallow I could not even stroke. it was about 2 feet deep in that section.
What would you do differently?:

wear the wetsuit a couple of times to get used to it.
Transition 1
  • 05m 2s
Comments:

I wore my tri suit so I did not have to put on bike shorts. I think I went pretty face espically since I have not done a transistion since August.
What would you do differently?:

I should practice more to get my order down but otherwise I went pretty fast. I bet it was a new HIM - T1 pr
Bike
  • 4h 11m 45s
  • 56 miles
  • 13.35 mile/hr
Comments:

I did the first half pretty hard. I was on a HIM bike split PR even with the wind. About mile 17 I got my first race flat. I started shouting in german. Lucky for me the sag vehical came by and changed the tire for me. Talk about lucky. About mile 30 is when the rains first hit. It came down and came down hard. The roads became fairly dangerous. instead of flying down bike hills I went down most of them breaking the whole way. I decided to do this when I saw the cars splashing waters all over the place. I did not want to hit the bottom of the hill, hit something or have the bike slip out from under me. Climbing was alot tougher since I started at a slow speed and had to climb the whole will. I was even blown off my bike right before the last aid station. I also have to dodge a fallen tree. Lucky for me it was laying on the side of the road and barely in the street.
What would you do differently?:

nothing really. I went at a pace I felt was good for me to get off the bike without blowing up. You can not control the weather. I am very Very glad that I did not use the tri bike. I had handling issues with the roadie as it was.
Transition 2
  • 04m 29s
Comments:

I moved quickly. I had all my stuff there since I did a good job securing my area. I did have to take some time and hunt for my wetsuit. It got moved or something. I did take my time and said hi to Coredump because he finished. I bet I Pred at t2 for a him
What would you do differently?:

Maybe bring an extra pair of socks and put my shoes in a bag.
Run
  • 2h 54m 42s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Well the run was tough, My Knee was hurting and I blistered bad from the water in my shoes. I ran into tupuppy he was manning a water stop. I beat like 5 - 6 people on the bike but I was the last to move to the run course. I was excited to see all the water stop were still there. My goal was to run around a 3 hour half marathon which I think I did.
What would you do differently?:

nothing really. I did the best I could and moved the fastest in my condition.
Post race
Warm down:

ate some food

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weather was the biggest thing. That and trying not to over use my knee. I went slow on purpose but I was still on a PR pace so I figured that was good.

Event comments:

Well the volinteers were GREAT. Its amazing that people raced in those conditions but more amazing the volitneers were still there. Those who stayed really should be commended. They did a good job and even though I was at the tail end I really felt there were looking after me.

I think they seem to handle the race itself very well.

I got lots of really good food this year. I was very excited about that.

The only complaint was I have no times. They pulled the finish line mat before I got there. Funny I finished this year about 23 minutes after and they had it out there. Ironicly that was the only part of the finish line that I saw torn down because of that I have no times at all for the race beyond what I was able to capture. They said last year they have no time limit expect on the swim and if that changed I have no idea where they ever mentioned it.

I Pred by atleast 10 minutes over my spirit of racine him time. It is probably my last year doing the Rockman. Too much money for what you get, and I always return home happy for finishing but frustrated at the same time.

After comparing my results from last year I did not change much. Swim was about 25 seconds slower. bike was 46 seconds slower. Time I really made up was in t1 which was 6:30 faster and t2 which was 3:00 mins faster. I was about 13:30 faster on the run. It actually makes me feel better because the weather was alot worse on the bike this year. my second half of the bike I took it slow so I did not get crash. Plus I had alot more energy on the run being able to move about 1 min/mile faster. I think if It was not for the rain I would have sub 8 for sure.

Thats great that you beat you last years time by 23 minutes, that is one tough course. I can't believe they packed up their stuff before everyone finished. Thats so disrespectful.

You are right, you did not get a time. You finished after the published cut off time, thus you are DQ and do not get a time nor splits - same as at any IM or 70.3 event.

I am VERY happy that you were able to make it to Olsen Lake, the fact is we had cut off times that were published.

A few notes -

Drafting in the swim is LEGAL! That is what you are supposed to do if you are not in the lead. If you were in 2 feet of water, you were off course and/or on the beach. The avg water depth from point to point is over 10 feet (but for the start at 4' at the white pole). If the depth was an issue...why is it that Blake Becker and Heather Haviland are not complaining?

---------------------------------------------

As for "too much money for what you get"?

As the RD for Rockman, please do not sign up for our events again. This is the second year that you are the ONLY person with complaints. Despite the weather (that was horrible) and the fallen tree's (that almost killed Heather Haviland). Dispite wind blowing helmets into the lake and bikes off of transition racks - dispite lighting stikes and hail. You as our second time last place finisher are the only one with complaints...dispite the fact we had plenty of food (only due to the fact the park was evacuated), and then I personally gave you a ride to your car after your finish...

The day was a heck of a tough one...but there is no way on earth any RD can beg folks to stay at a park unpaid and wait for a person to do a half in more time than it takes some folks to do a full IronMan.

I hope you have some great times and races going forward, and I hope you the best.

Swim Split - 49:41 - 5:02/100
Trans - 5:02
Bike Split - 4:11:45 - 13.3mph
Trans 4:29
Run Split - DNF due to time cut off.

The cut off was the cut off...there is no disrepect. IMNA would have pulled him from the course after the bike.

Thanks for the times Chip.

Yeah I figured I got too far off the course on the second loop. First loop I was surprised to see people getting up and running. I was man they must been horrible swimmers and did not want to swim. Turns out they had bad siting as well.

As for the the cut off you really should publish them. You only have the swim listed and I could not find any others. If it was listed I was not able to see them.

I really liked the new mile markers on the run course they were great.

you had a run cut off? actually I went through the Adobe attachment on the Rockman site and it only lists a swim cut off, nothing anywhere about a bike or run cutoff. Now if you said the conditions were getting worse and we stopped the race, that I would understand.

Also wtf with saying to someone dont register for our future events because you are too slow for us, and because we don't like your race report opinions.

So come do Mooseman next year - there were plenty of people still getting out of the water in the same time you had, and folks were still around (as were timing mats) - we had hot as hades though, not hurricaine!

good job and keep at it...

I was just reading this report. Congrats for finishing. In all fairness though they really should have not even allowed you to start the run if the cutoff times were being enforced.

Cut Off Times
Swim: 1:10 after the start
Bike: 5 hours after the start
Run: 8 hours after the start

While it's great that you kept going, it really isn't fair to the volunteers to make them wait for someone who is substantially behind the expected cutoff times, especially with the weather. The fact that there was a huge storm that blew most of the finish line and tranistion gear all over the place meant that the volunteers had already been asked to do for more than expected to keep the race in progress. Expecting them to continue when you were about a half hour behind the next closest finisher borders on being unreasonable. Perhaps the RD should have sent a vehicle to pickup people who were on the run course past the cutoff time, but it sounds like he had his hands full just trying to keep some semblance of order after the storm did significant damage.

Without being too critical, it appears you need to work more on your biking. The Rockman course is not very difficult and even with the weather you should have been able to finish in less than 4 hours. Even at your size you should be able to average at least 15 mph or better.

Keep training, keep getting better and you won't need to worry about cutoffs.

Where did you find those cut offs? I could not find anything on the site or race info pdf.

If I would known about any cut offs I would not have continued. The real issue is the lack of publication. Its a simple thing to put on the web site. I would strongly recommend that the RD puts them on the site. This would greatly prevent any confusion.

My knee and the rain really slowed me down. Since I peddled up the hills basicly with 1 leg and I rode the breaks down every hill on the return trip because of the rain. I figure if I was going to lose it on the bike I would rather be going 10 mph than 35 mph.
