Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 62/82
Pre-race routine:

today i woke up at 3am. at some oatmeal with protein a banana, Drove to Lawrence, had a bagel and another banana... and some gateraide (that i left on my bumper when getting my bag out of the back). got transition set up and just kind of walked around.
Event warmup:

not too much warm up... did some solder stuff for the swim
Swim
  • 46m 9s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 23s / 100 meters
Comments:

in the wave start i walked in to the water as far as i could from the beech. first 765 went good, 400 went good. then about 2/3 of the way through i had to pee... my wet suit is a little tight and some how i couldnt swim and pee at the same time... i tried to do this a few times with out any luck, floating, on my back, dogie paddle, etc. then just kept swimming... once i was about 1300 in i started swimming to the left in to the bouies 2 different times one bouie after the other. probley added an extra 200 to my swim from bad navagation.....
What would you do differently?:

watch where im going and learn how to pee
Transition 1
  • 04m 41s
Comments:

once i got out of the water i walked and simi jogged to my bike... walked to the bike exit.... went to the jon. walked to bike on spot. and jumped on my bike
What would you do differently?:

work a little quicker... have shoes ready to put on or decide that im going to stick with my plan of puting shoes on clips and jumping on to bike
Bike
  • 3h 08m 8s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.86 mile/hr
Comments:

2500 feet of climbing... section 1/3 (miles 1 to 16) talked with #1254 on the way out and back on flats and hills. he was a better climber but goign down it helps to be 205-210... worked 6/10 on this section just getting my legs warmed up. 2/3 (miles 16-34) this section is nice with rollers, talked most of the time to same guy and had some good conversations... work 6-7/10 just getting warmed up. Section 3/3 (miles 34ish-56this is where i started to feel good.there was a desint head wind most of the time on this but i would go hard donw the hills and push as far up the hills in a hard gear as i could then shift in to easy and make it to the top (recovery). there are about 4-5 solid hills in this section. i had lost my talking buddie by now. when i got to mile 50ish i kindof started coasting not pushing that hard so that i would have my legs underme a little.

NUTRITION:
protine bar 3 miles in to bike and at mile 30ish or so... 5/6/7 gu packs dont know how many cause i had 3-4 of my own and grabed some from voulenteers. 4 24 oz of gateraide and 2 24 oz of H2O
What would you do differently?:

start off w water on bike
Transition 2
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

got off bike in good form. walked bike to rack and changed socks put runing shoes on and started jogging...
What would you do differently?:

not too much...
Run
  • 1h 47m 33s
  • 11.1 miles
  • 09m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

started first 2 miles ar around 8:30 pase. then slwoed to 10min. got all the way to mile 6 and did a heart rate count off my watch and holding my neck... and i was up around 168 so i figured that i should walk for a bit.... walked for 3 min and went back to running, i mean jogging. around mile 9 i met up with a girl from STL and asked her something and then just kept running with her at around a 8:30/9:00 rate. some where between mile's 3 and 9 i dont really remember anything about the sceenery of where i was running. kindof like a black out but i was concious and feeling fine. after the race i realized that i was in the zone and did a great job of blocking everything out

i loved the sponges that they were handing out

NUTRITION: again started with 4-5 gu's and grabed some from the voulenteers so i would say 4/7 gu's on the run and a protine bar around mile 7. grabed 3-4 gateraide cups adn 5-6 water cups at the aid stations
What would you do differently?:

run 2 more miles. The storm came in right when we were going to go do our last part of the second loop. i guess i would rater be alice then get struck by lightning.

the only pat that i didnt like was that all of the watter that you dump on your head ends up going down... in to your shoes.... dont like wet socks and wet shoes
Post race
Warm down:

the rain was coming down so i waled over to my bike and started packing up. walked up the hill and to my car on the way i grabbed 4 pieces of pizza and stacked them on top of each other and at them in the rain. packed my car up and stretchd. got in the car drove 1 hour home and took a nap from 330ish to 7 or so.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

experience and training. i was not planing on doing this race and signed up 2 days before the event... I am so glad that i was able to finish and keep a smile on my face for the whole race!!!!!

Event comments:

i hate rain! i know that i could have ran the other 2 miles of the course my time would have been 6:08:29 if averaged out to the other run time. but it might have gotten a little quicker pase if i knew that were were goign to be at the finish line so soon

17/49 Clydesdales, and 1st age group clydes

Congratulations Drew!

Amazing finish time!

Edit:  Just noticed you were one of the racers who got pulled from the race early.  Sucks....but you were within arms reach of the finish.  Be proud.....you were rockin' the course buddy!

i think i missed the cut off by about 5 min or so.... dang....

Also rememered some funny/ fun things from the couse after reeding other's race reports

1. guy on course around mile 52 in banna hammock with tats.. him and his buddies had been drinking out there for several hours and i think the heat started to get to them.

2. old group of about 20 people in campgrounds drinking and doing the wave... one guy had a sign 70.3 kansas sponsored by bush light....

3. water station where there where abotu 20 5-7 year olds with water. each one saying water about every 4-5 seconds

4. girl in boat area water station... ICE ICE.. BABY.... in the song style... and i asked her if it was vanilla

Wow, great race for deciding to do it 2 days pre-race- not much time for a taper, huh? Congrats again, and now you'll have to sign up for another to get those 2 extra miles in

Oh yeah- those dudes in the banana hammock were friggin' hysterical!!!
